Salena Jones - Let it Be Music » Jazz » Vocal Jazz
Salena Jones - Let it Be   Artist: Salena Jones
   Album: Let It Be
   Label: JVC
   Year: 1988
   Format, bitrate: MP3, 320 kb/s
   Size: 122 mb

Born in Newport News, VA, in 1944, Salena Jones (real name: Joan Elizabeth Shaw) would -- over the course of a 60-plus-year career -- become one of the leading vocalists of swing music, performing in a number of countries in Europe and Asia and recording a number of albums. Jones got her first break at the famed Apollo Theater in New York, winning a talent contest that resulted in a record deal. She spent the early part of her career touring and performing with such leading lights as Louis Armstrong, Cab Calloway, and Duke Ellington. Her first forays overseas, to Spain and the U.K., were in the mid-'60s and were to begin a life spent mostly outside the rather fickle confines of the United States. In 1978, she made her first appearance in Japan and performed there on an annual basis. By the first decade of the 21st century, she had performed on most continents, recorded more than 40 albums, and sang at the 2006 Shanghai International Jazz Festival.

Manu Katche - Neighbourhood Music » Jazz » Modern Jazz
Manu Katche - Neighbourhood   Artist: Manu Katche
   Album: Neighbourhood
   Year: 2006
   Label: ECM Records
   Format, bitrate: Mp3, 320kb/s
   Size: 106Mb (95+11)+cover.jpg
   Time: 52min

The superb French/Ivory Coast drummer Manu Katche, long a backing force on many ECM sessions, steps out on his own for the first time on this label and comes up with a gem with a little help from some of the ECM stars. Indeed, "Neighbourhood" is a very appropriate title, for there are several interlocking orbits of personnel within this album. For a start, the CD marks another collaboration between trumpeter Tomasz Stanko and saxophonist Jan Garbarek, the latter whom Katche has been backing on and off since the early '90s. Moreover Stanko brought along part of his Polish rhythm team, pianist Marcin Wasilewski and bassist Slawomir Kurkiewicz, for the session. Michel Petrucciani is clearly on Katche's mind, for not only is the album dedicated to the late pianist, the reflective, ardently lyrical mood of Katche's compositions and Wasilewski's piano work -- are quite reminiscent of Petrucciani at his most relaxed. And Katche can write; his tunes are often wistful and thoughtful, his percussive backing crisp yet subtle, carefully filling in the cracks while keeping just enough of a gentle pulse. The best of the lot, the simple angular tune of "Good Influence," grabs you by the throat, tugs at your heart, and doesn't quit the memory sure signs of greatness. By contrast, "Lovely Walk" kicks up the tempo behind an ostinato bass while "Take Off and Land" brings in a touch of fatback funk. If there is a single wellspring behind this music -- besides Petrucciani of course -- Herbie Hancock's acoustic combo recordings of the late '60s come closest in terms of ambience and harmony. Call this album an inspired descendant two generations and an ocean away.

Joey Calderazzo - Amanecer Music » Jazz » Mainstream
Joey Calderazzo - Amanecer   Artist: Joey Calderazzo
   Album: Amanecer
   Year: 2007
   Label: Marsalis music
   Format: Flac
   Time: 57min
   Size: 230Mb (95+95+40)

Joey Calderazzo's Amanecer is mostly a solo piano recording. Calderazzo strides effectively on "Midnight Voyage," puts plenty of emotion into Michael Brecker's "Sea Glass," and comes up with intriguing ideas throughout his "Toonay." Claudia Acuña and guitarist Romero Lubambo guest on three selections apiece, both having a duet apiece with Calderazzo and making the group a trio on "Amanecer" and "Lara." Calderazzo, who is in consistently creative form throughout this superior effort, interacts well with Acuña on her mostly wordless vocals, romps on "I've Never Been in Love Before" and plays a thoughtful rendition of Bill Evans' "Waltz for Debby." Every selection on this well-conceived project has its purpose and is memorable in its own way. Highly recomended.

Roy Buchanan - Second Album Music » Blues » Modern electric blues
Roy Buchanan - Second Album    Artist: Roy Buchanan
    Album: Second Album
    Label: Polydor Records
    Year: 1973
    Format, bitrate: mp3, 192 kb/s
    Time: 34:00
    Size: 48,1 Mb (cover)
AMG Rating: Roy Buchanan - Second Album

Roy Buchanan's Second Album (1974) was recorded less than six months after completing his self-titled major-label debut, Roy Buchanan (1972), and sported a slightly amended version of the Snakestretchers — featuring Ned Davis (drums), Dick Heintze (keyboards), Teddy Irwin (rhythm guitar), Chuck Tilley (vocals/rhythm guitar), and, replacing Pete Van Allen, Don Payne (bass). The vibe is much in keeping with the previous effort, albeit decidedly more blues-based. Likewise, the arguably misplaced countrified cuts have been dispensed with, as the musicians concentrate more specifically on traditional blues and original compositions. . . .
Lee Konitz - Motion Music » Jazz » BeBop » Cool
Lee Konitz - Motion   Artist: Lee Konitz
Album: Motion 3LP/2CD (Verve Elite Edition)
   Label: Verve
   Year: 1961
   Format, bitrate: MP3@320
   Size: 460 MB

Altoist Lee Konitz recorded the original five songs of Motion on Aug. 29, 1961 in a trio with bassist Sonny Dallas and drummer Elvin Jones. When the set was reissued on a 1990 CD, it had been expanded to eight songs; although it is not obvious from the outside of this 1998 set, there are three CDs in this package. The Elvin Jones date has been augmented by a previously unreleased version of "These Foolish Things" from the same day, along with a breakdown on "You'd Be So Nice to Come Home To." The two extra CDs are taken from a couple of earlier sessions with Nick Stabulas on drums joining Konitz and Dallas; none of that music (29 selections) had ever been released before. Although not the altoist's greatest set (as claimed in the liner notes), Lee Konitz was in excellent form during this period, playing creative solos over common chord changes and coming up with plenty of rewarding subtle ideas. Elvin Jones shows how quietly he can play, yet always swings with constant creativity too. Worth exploring, although more general listeners will probably be satisfied with the 1990 single-disc reissue.

   Release: 2004
   Label: Intense
   Format, bitrate: mp3, 320kbs
   Size: 270mb (95+95+80)

"I always play what I feel. I always feel like me, but I'm a different me every day. I get ideas from everything. A big color, the sound of water and wind, or a flash of something cool. Playing is like life. Either you feel it or you don't."

Roy Buchanan Music » Blues » Modern electric blues
Roy Buchanan    Artist: Roy Buchanan
    Album: Roy Buchanan
    Label: Polydor
    Year: 1972
    Format, bitrate: mp3, 256 kb/s
    Time: 32:07
    Size: 60:00
    AMG Rating: Roy Buchanan

The recording and production on this, Roy Buchanan's first record for Polydor, is delightfully bare, sparse in ornamentation, and full of bum notes and aborted ideas that would be deleted on most commercial releases. It is a loose, highly improvised affair that amply demonstrates why the leader is one of the underappreciated giants of rootsy guitar. Straddling country, blues, and traditional rock & roll, Buchanan's playing is fiery and unpremeditated. His tone is delightfully raw and piercing, his solo ideas impetuous and uncluttered. . . .

kiss EVERY DAY IS AN OSCAR PETERSON DAY ! kiss

This is a rather incredible collection: ten CDs enclosed in a tight black box that includes every one of the recordings Verve owns of Billie Holiday, not only the many studio recordings of 1952-57 (which feature Lady Day joined by such jazz all-stars as trumpeters Charlie Shavers and Harry "Sweets" Edison, altoist Benny Carter, and the tenors of Flip Phillips, Paul Quinichette, Ben Webster and pianist Oscar Peterson). Also included are prime performances at Jazz at the Philharmonic concerts in 1945-1947, an enjoyable European gig from 1954, her "comeback" Carnegie Hall concert of 1956, Holiday's rather sad final studio album from 1959, and even lengthy tapes from two informal rehearsals. It's a perfect purchase for the true Billie Holiday fanatic.
