Herbie Mann - Sunbelt |

 |
Artist: Herbie Mann Album: Sunbelt Label: Collectables Year: 1979 Release: 2001 Format, bitrate: Mp3, 320kbps Time: 32:54 Size: 91.6 MB Following the 1969 hit album Memphis Underground a number of disco-style smooth jazz records in the 1970s, mainly on Atlantic records, brought some criticism from jazz purists but helped Mann remain active during a period of declining interest in jazz. The musicians on these recordings are some of the best-known session players in soul and jazz, including singer Cissy Houston (mother of Whitney Houston), guitarists Duane Allman and Larry Coryell, bassists Donald "Duck" Dunn and Chuck Rainey and drummers Al Jackson and Bernard Purdie, these last from the Muscle Shoals studio in Alabama. In this period Mann had a number of songs cross over to the pop charts — rather rare for a jazz musician. A 1998 interview reported that "At least 25 Herbie Mann albums have made the top 200 pop charts, success denied most of his jazz peers." ~ Wikipedia |

Artist: Roy Buchanan Album: Blues In E (compilation live) Label: Wesgram Records Release: 2002 Format, bitrate: mp3, 320 kb/s Time: 52:17 Size: 120 Mb The guitar wizard Roy Buchanan is in incendiary form on this live set, which features astonishing re-workings of rock and R&B standards such as "Green Onions" and "Peter Gunn," as well as a tribute to Jimi Hendrix with "Hey Joe" and "Foxy Lady," both of the latter providing an opportunity to compare the two guitar maestros' styles. Buchanan's signature "The Messiah Will Come Again," first recorded for his 1972 debut album, is transformed here into a mesmerizing blend of gospel, blues, psychedelia, and disturbing anguish. It's as powerful a guitar instrumental as you'll ever hear. Buy.com |

The surprise re-issue of the year. A wonderfully hard-hitting big band, stocked with mostly unknown names amply proves that it doesn't take highly paid studio musicians to make for one hour of the most brilliant swing to come out of the early Sixties. |

Artist: Mingus Big Band Album: Live in Time Label: Dreyfus Year: 1996 Format, bitrate: MP3, 320 Kbps Time: 143:17 Size: 277 MB AMG Rating: LIVE IN TIME was nominated for a 1997 Grammy Award for Best Large Jazz Ensemble Performance. Having exhausted most of the late bassist's best-known songs, the Mingus Big Band emphasizes obscurities (such as "Sue's Changes," "Children's Hour of Dream" and "Chair in the Sky"), along with later-period work, on their third release, Live in Time, a double CD. The orchestra really digs into the complex material, and they perform Mingus' almost impossible-to-play originals with joy, swing and constant excitement. Among the many all-stars on this fascinating and highly enjoyable set (all of whom are featured) are trumpeters Randy Brecker, Philip Harper and Ryan Kisor, trombonists Frank Lacy, Robin Eubanks and Britt Woodman, altoists Gary Bartz and Steve Slagle, Seamus Blake, Mark Shim and John Stubblefield on tenors, Ronnie Cuber or Gary Smulyan on baritone and Kenny Drew Jr. or John Hicks on piano. The gloriously overcrowded ensembles, the explosive solos and the spirit of Mingus are three of the many reasons to acquire this memorable effort. ~ Scott Yanow, AMG |

Artist: Roy Buchanan Album: Malaguena Label: Annecillo Records Year: 1988 Release: 1997 Format, bitrate: mp3, 192 kb/s Time: 50:45 Size: 69,9 Mb This wonderful release contains live and alternate takes ranging from his early/mid sixties period through to the late '80s. To me, the most interesting stuff is the earlier material when Roy was a wild young guitar slinger with chops by the armfull raging full throttle each night at your local roadhouse. Of interest to Buchanan fans is the live showstopper Malaguena (including his take on "The Lonely Bull", "After Hours" and a radio spot for the Crossroads Lounge with Roy wailing in the background). You can smell the hot dogs and taste the beer!! . . . |

Artist: Quasimode Album: Sounds of Peace Label: Geneon Year: 2008 Format, bitrate: mp3, 260 kbps Time: 59:49 Size: 87MB A deeper sound than usual for Quasimode and that's saying a lot, given their previous albums! There's a fullness here that's really amazing a further extension of their already righteous approach to jazzy grooves, into territory that's even more mindblowing, soul-searching, and perfectly played! As before, there's lots of upbeat acoustic rhythms on the set club jazz, but not of the fake variety topped with searing horn work that includes guest performances from members of Sleep Walker, Soil & Pimp, and Jazz Collective! But almost even better are the few vocal cuts featuring either Dwight Trible or Carmen Lundy both singers we totally love from a classic jazz perspective, sounding even more wonderful here in the company of Quasimode. The whole thing's great an album we'd stack proudly next to our older favorites on Impulse or Strata East and titles include "Take The New Frontiers", "Finger Tip", "Young Black Horse", "One Possibility", "Rumble In The Jungle", "Midnight Flower", and "Sound Of Peace". © 1996-2009, Dusty Groove America, Inc. |

Steve Turre - TNT |

Artist: Steve Turre Album: TNT (Trombone-N-Tenor) Label: Telarc Year: 2000 Release:2001 Format, bitrate: MP3, 128 kb/s Time: 50:00 Size: 54 MB AMG Rating: Steve Turre offers his first quintet project with TNT -- Trombone ‘N' Tenor, an exciting collection of eight compositions dedicated to a select group of jazz elders. Turre plays with three different quintets and is joined by tenor saxophonists James Carter, Dewey Redman and David Sanchez. Turre focuses purely on trombone, a departure from his previous releases that have included his exceptional playing on the conch shells. The ensemble boasts an astonishing repertoire of historic compositions by Stanley Turrentine, Hoagy Carmichael, and Benny Goodman as wells as four originals penned by Steve Turre. Among the highlights are an unforgettable version of "Stompin' At The Savoy" that features Dewey Redman's inimitable sax phrasings and nuance, the eleven minute "Dewey's Dance," a modal tune in ¾ time that captivates you with Stephen Scott's piano elegance, and the technical virtuosity of James Carter and Steve Turre's open-horn plunger orations on "Hallelujah, I Love Her So." Unlike his In The Spur of The Moment recording which featured Turre's mastery of the Ellington-style of muted playing, TNT -- Trombone ‘N' Tenor treats listeners to Turre's enjoyable art of the plunger-Basie style. David Sanchez's Afro-Cuban voice proves to be the perfect complement for Turre's clave and horn playing on "Puente of Soul." Together with the percussive fuel played by Giovanni Hidalgo, the ensemble reaches new heights in Turre's repertoire of Afro-Cuban jazz. ~ Paula Edelstein, All Music Guide |

Art Farmer Quintet Plays The Great Jazz Hits |

 |
Artist: Art Farmer Album: Art Farmer Quintet Plays The Great Jazz Hits Label: Columbia Year: 1967 Format, bitrate: mp3@320 Size: 103 MB AMG Rating: The title of this reissue LP is a bit ironic for jazz was really struggling commercially in 1967 and the "hits" were few and far between. In fact flugelhornist Art Farmer, who leads the notable hard bop quintet (with Jimmy Heath on tenor, pianist Cedar Walton, bassist Walter Booker and drummer Mickey Roker), would be moving to Europe the following year where he would work much more often than he had in the U.S. The ten numbers on this LP were fairly popular, particularly such tunes as "Song for My Father," "The Sidewinder," "Watermelon Man" and "Take Five." The quintet's concise interpretations (no performance is over six minutes) are melodic without being overly predictable. As usual Farmer's lyricism by itself is a good reason to search for this underrated album. ~ Scott Yanow, AMG |

Stanley Turrentine - Have You Ever Seen The Rain |

Artist: Stanley Turrentine Album: Have You Ever Seen The Rain Label: Fantasy Year: 1975 Release: 1989 Format, bitrate: MP3, 256 kbps Size: 86 mb Time: 38:35 Stanley blows it sweet, mellow, and soulfully in this wonderful post-CTI session from the 70s! The set features some swirling larger arrangements from Gene Page done with a bit of the CTI sound lurking in the mix, but also a more complicated groove that almost takes on soundtrack-like proportions at times a warmly-flowing groove that's lush without being soppy, and which really sets Turrentine up nicely for some sophisticated, mature solos on tenor. Stan's got some great company on the record including Patrice Rushen on keyboards, David T Walker on guitar, and Freddie Hubbard on trumpet and although the set's laidback, it's a lot more soulful than you might think almost like a hip mellow soul set from the time, but with tenor instead of vocals. Includes covers of the Earth Wind & Fire tunes "Reasons" and "That's The Way Of The World", plus the tracks "Touching You", "T's Dream", and "Have You Ever Seen The Rain". © 1996-2009, Dusty Groove America, Inc. |

No doubt pleased with his countrified direction on Gone, Just Like a Train, Bill Frisell gives us a lot more of basically the same thing here -- only with expanded numbers in the ranks. Bassist Viktor Krauss and drummer Jim Keltner return, now accompanied by Wayne Horvitz's understated organ and piano; Greg Leisz on an assortment of fretted instruments, including the dobro, pedal steel guitar and mandolin; and on "Shenandoah," Ry Cooder's atmospheric guitars. The first tracks of Good Dog, Happy Man pick up right where Gone, Just Like a Train left off -- low-key, perhaps too low-key -- but tracks like "Big Shoe" and "Cadillac 1959" add a bit of swagger to the lope and "Poem for Eva" sports the best tune. Again, Frisell often captures a loose, evolutionary jamming quality in these sessions, playing the country accents off of his jazz sensibilities. Unlike its predecessor, though, you can't imagine this being recorded on a backwoods front porch, for there are some production tricks and distant-sounding electronic loops that give away its Burbank studio origins. Purists on either side of the jazz/country divide are hereby warned to back off so that the rest of us can enjoy this. ~ Richard S. Ginell, AMG |

Norman Granz was the impetus behind the musical performances being filmed or videotaped in this outstanding DVD set, which was finalized after his death. The opening segment, from a session directed by the photographer Gjon Mili, pairs studio sessions featuring Coleman Hawkins, Charlie Parker, Lester Young, Bill Harris, Ella Fitzgerald, and Harry "Sweets" Edison (not necessarily all in the same performances) with footage videotaped in a studio that lacked proper soundproofing. . . . |
