Tristano & Konitz & Marsh - The Complete Atlantic Recordings Jazz, Cool, Hard-bop, Avantgarde
Tristano & Konitz & Marsh - The Complete Atlantic Recordings    Artist: Lennie Tristano
Album: The Complete Atlantic Recordings Of Lennie Tristano, Lee Konitz & Warne Marsh
    Label: Mosaic Records
    Year: 1954-1961
    Release: 1997
    Formate, bitrate: MP3, 192 kbps
    Size: 475 mb

AMG Rating: Tristano & Konitz & Marsh - The Complete Atlantic Recordings

While the hard bop music of the 1950s and 1960s has seen a considerable revival and now prospers in the hands of scores of talented youngsters, other historical genres have not been so fondly remembered nor have fared as well. The cerebral music of pianist Lennie Tristano and his cohorts has been largely neglected by all but a few historians and the small number of surviving players that came under the spell of the iconoclast pianist during his brief period in the spotlight. A recent six-disc or ten-LP boxed set from Mosaic provides a very valuable and logical package in that is presents Tristano's ground-breaking sessions for Atlantic and also brings to the forefront long out-of-print dates from two of his closest associates, alto saxophonist Lee Konitz and tenor saxophonist Warne Marsh . . . .

Verve Jazz Masters 49 - Anita O'Day   Artist: Anita O'Day
   Album: Verve Jazz Masters# 49
   Label: Verve
   Year: 1952
   Release: 1995
   Format, bitrate: MP3 320 kbps
   Size: 70 mb
AMG Rating: Verve Jazz Masters 49 - Anita O'Day

This is an excellent one-disc roundup of Anita O'Day's output for Clef, Norgan and Verve arguably her most important, most experimental period and it is especially valuable because Anita and her manager Alan Eichler made the selections themselves. It was during this decade of activity that O'Day made the transition from a spent former big-band thrush to an acclaimed jazz diva, despite the turmoil in her personal life and her feeling that she was playing second-fiddle to Ella in Norman Granz' recording stable. The selection is remarkably wide-ranging, sampling from twelve of O'Day's sixteen albums for Granz and his successor at Verve, Creed Taylor, with lots of loosely swinging mid- and uptempo numbers and ballads that can be alternately world-wise and innocent. Among the many highlights that illustrate the diversity of O'Day's Verve period are "No Soap, No Hope Blues," from O'Day's first rare ten-inch album for Granz; her saucy remake of "Boogie Blues" with the innovative Gary McFarland orchestra; and the sexy, swaggering title track of Waiter, Make Mine Blues. Anyone seeking an entryway into the tough yet vulnerable song world of Anita O'Day will get a lot of helpful direction from this album.

Five musicians from the RTS Big Band, already tired of innumerable bands, and one-time projects, were united to change such a dangerous pattern. The newly-formed quintet, gathered round a carefully, selected repertoire, chose, for the beginning, a name that cleary suggested their unshakeable commitment to jazz music and everythingthat they recognized as its essence. "Jazz Sences", perhaps subconsciously, found their oasis of mantal health sincerely rejoicing in every gig thay had together, in every chance to pour over magabytes of positive energy in an unpredictable creative interactions. Legendary gigs during the bombing (1999), in "Jazz Cafe" in Obilicev Venac St. before the ominous evening siren were not just collecttively cathartic for the audience and the musicians, but also announcement of the arrival of in many aspects, a very special band with huge potential.

In 1992 the VAO opened a new phase with a smaller complement of musicians. The band played fewer of Ruegg's compositions and concentrated on arrangements of works by Duke Ellington, Charles Mingus, and other noted American jazz composers, as well as music inspired by the classical music of Verdi, Wagner, Schubert, and Erik Satie.
In 1993 the VAO is expanded for the first time into big band formation and plays the orignal charts of Duke Ellington & Charles Mingus.

Caravan Palace is a self-described électro-swing group from Paris, France, that made its full-length album debut in 2008. Comprised of Charles Delaporte (bass, programming), Arnaud Vial (guitar, programming), Hugues Payen (violin, programming), Colotis Zoé (vocals), Toustou (electronics, trombone), and Chapi (clarinette), the group is chiefly influenced by Django Reinhardt but also cites Vitalic, Cab Calloway, Justice, Lionel Hampton, and Daft Punk among its influences. Caravan Palace made their self-titled full-length album debut in 2008 on the French independent label Wagram Music. Promoted with the release of "Jolie Coquine" as a single, Caravan Palace was very well received, reaching the Top 20 of the French albums chart and garnering acclaim for its traditional jazz inclinations.

From the summer of 1977 (one year before his death), this was violinist Joe Venuti's final recording session. Pianist/leader Ross Tompkins, bassist Ray Brown and drummer Jake Hanna first interpret "Softly As In a Morning Sunrise" and then welcome tenor saxophonist Scott Hamilton (then 23) for a warm version of "I Got It Bad." Soon, Venuti makes the group a quintet, and they romp on a lively rendition of "I Want to Be Happy." After a few more standards, Venuti and Ray Brown duet on "Dark Eyes," a great vehicle for the classic violinist to end his career. Recommended.

Guitarist Steve Khan is heard in two different settings on this CD: in an acoustic trio with bassist Ron Carter and drummer Al Foster on six songs, and jamming with electric bassist Anthony Jackson, drummer Dennis Chambers and percussionist Manolo Badrena on three tunes. Actually, there is a definite unity to the program, and Khan is featured on a variety of jazz tunes including numbers by Larry Young, Ornette Coleman ("The Blessing" and "Turnaround"), Clare Fischer, Wayne Shorter, Thelonious Monk and Joe Henderson. He even plays a song ("Autumn In Rome") by his father, Sammy Cahn. The guitarist consistently stretches himself during these performances (which include a 10½-minute version of "All or Nothing at All") and is heard throughout at his most creative.

AMG Rating: Mike Stern - Odds Or Evens

This is a powerhouse date of high-powered fusion, mixing together the sound of rock with the musicianship and improvising of jazz. With the assistance of tenor saxophonist Bob Berg, keyboardist Jim Beard and a rhythm section, guitarist Stern jams through a set of originals that serve as jumping-off devices for fairly long solos. The musicians really stretch themselves within the idiom and even the quieter numbers are full of intensity. - Scott Yanow at AMG

Good '87 duo session, in which session and studio ace guitarist Steve Khan went against his reputation and did an album of duets with keyboardist and vocalist Rob Mounsey that weren't just funk and fusion, but mostly jazz-tinged instrumentals.

Eddie Higgins has been a solid bop pianist for decades, though he seems most appreciated by the folks who run the Japanese label Venus, for whom he has recorded frequently in his golden years. Joined by two-thirds of Phil Woods' longtime rhythm section (Steve Gilmore and Bill Goodwin), along with special guest Scott Hamilton on tenor sax, Higgins explores a dozen ballads, most of which have been favorites of jazz musicians longer than the pianist has been playing professionally. Higgins doesn't mind taking a back seat to Hamilton's Ben Webster-inspired tenor, though he can also wail when he chooses to do so. The snappy take of "Russian Lullaby" is a highlight, featuring all four of the musicians in turn. One can hear Higgins singing softly to himself as he introduces his lush arrangement of "Embraceable You." While there is nothing groundbreaking about any of the selections, this is excellent music that will provide a perfect backdrop for any jazz fan's romantic evening.

REPOST with new links for lossless from Mr. DrDemento

This attractive three-CD set contains the master takes of all 66 selections recorded by Duke Ellington's Orchestra during what many historians consider its peak period. Left out are the many alternate takes, last released by European labels, and the Duke Ellington-Jimmy Blanton duets, which are available on a different CD. Included are dozens of classics, including "Ko-Ko," "Concerto for Cootie," "Cottontail," "Harlem Air Shaft," "All Too Soon," "In a Mellotone," "Warm Valley," "Take the 'A' Train," "Jumpin' Punkins," "I Got It Bad," "Jump for Joy," "Rocks in My Bed," "Chelsea Bridge," "Perdido," "The C Jam Blues," and "Johnny Come Lately," among many others. The arrangements and originals of Ellington and Billy Strayhorn are full of surprises, and even the lesser-known pieces are generally gems. With such soloists as trumpeter Cootie Williams, cornetists Rex Stewart and Ray Nance, trombonists Tricky Sam Nanton and Lawrence Brown, clarinetist Barney Bigard, altoist Johnny Hodges, tenor saxophonist Ben Webster, baritonist Harry Carney, bassist Jimmy Blanton, and the leader/pianist (plus singers Ivie Anderson and Herb Jeffries), Ellington led quite a remarkable unit. This music is essential for all jazz collections.

Joe Pass - Virtuoso In New York BeBop, Mainstream
Joe Pass - Virtuoso In New York   Artist: Joe Pass
   Album: Virtuoso In New York
   Label: Pablo Records
   Year: 1975
   Release: 2004
   Format, bitrate: MP3, 320 kbps
   Time: 47 min
   Size: 108 MB

The saying that "life begins at 40" is certainly open to debate — especially if you live in a youth-obsessed culture like the United States. But for jazz artists, there can be some truth in that saying; the history of jazz is full of artists who did some of their best work after 40. Joe Pass is a perfect example; Pass turned 40 in 1969, and the '70s were an amazingly productive time for the late guitar icon (who recorded frequently during that decade thanks to Pablo founder Norman Granz). In fact, Pass did so much recording during the '70s that albums of previously unreleased material were still coming out long after his death from cancer in 1994. Virtuoso in New York, for example, is an album of recordings that went unreleased for 29 years; recorded in 1975, these Granz-produced performances didn't see the light of day until 2004. And for serious Pass collectors, the arrival of Virtuoso in New York is very good news; performing unaccompanied — no bass, no drums, no piano — Pass is in fine form on familiar standards like "The Way You Look Tonight" and "We'll Be Together Again." The solo guitar format is one that Pass was quite fond of, and it serves him enjoyably well whether he is turning his attention to George Gershwin's "How Long Has This Been Going On" or Kurt Weill's "Mack the Knife" (also known as "Moritat" or "Threepenny Opera"). As much as Virtuoso in New York has going for it, this 49-minute CD falls short of essential — there are no compelling reasons why someone with a more casual interest in Pass' legacy would choose this release over, say, 1973's stunning, absolutely essential Virtuoso. Nonetheless, Virtuoso in New York is a pleasing disc that the guitarist's hardcore fans will easily enjoy.
