Mike Stern - Time In Place |

 |
 |
Artist: Mike Stern Album: Time In Place Label: Atlantic / Wea Release: 1988 Format, bitrate: mp3, 320 kb/s Time: 45:21 Size: 104 Mb AMG Rating: Guitarist Mike Stern's music has often been a little difficult to classify, featuring strong improvisations, the sound and power of rock, and elements of funk, R&B and sometimes pop. For his second recording as a leader, Stern is joined by either Bob Berg or Michael Brecker on tenor, keyboardist Jim Beard, electric bassist Jeff Andrews, drummer Peter Erskine and percussionist Don Alias; Don Grolnick sits in on organ during "No Notice." The music (seven Stern originals) ranges from the rhythmic to the more sophisticated and features plenty of the leader's high-powered guitar. - Scott Yanow, AMG |

Gerry Mulligan & Art Farmer- News from Blueport |

Artist: Gerry Mulligan & Art Farmer Album: News from Blueport (Live) Label: Jazz Hour Year: 1959 Release:Jan 30, 1996 Format, bitrate: mp3, 192 kb/s Time: 62:49 Size: 82 Mb AMG Rating: Gerry Mulligan and Art Farmer played together for only a brief time in the late fifties, so this 1959 concert is a valuable addition to their discography, although there are dropouts in places due to a faulty tape source, especially on "As Catch Can." The interplay of this tightly knit group is exemplary throughout the CD, especially on the lyrical treatment of "Baubles, Bangles, And Beads" and the leader's still fresh "Walkin' Shoes." Mulligan switches to piano for "Spring Is Sprung" and a long version of Farmer's "Blueport" is the album's highlight. Highly recommended. ~ Ken Dryden, All Music Guide |

Pepper Adams - Pepper |

Artist: Pepper Adams Album: Pepper Label: Enja Year: 1975, 1986 Release (CD): 1996 Formate, Bitrate: mp3, 128 kbps Time: 48:19 Size: 73 mb AMG Rating: This CD reissue has the four songs recorded by baritone great Pepper Adams for an obscure 1975 Enja quartet LP with pianist Walter Norris, bassist George Mraz and drummer Makaya Ntshoko plus one number apiece from Adams' two Justin Time albums with Denny Christianson's big band in 1986. Although Pepper was seriously ill by the mid-'80s, he plays quite well on his features with the orchestra ("Osage Autumn" and "My Funny Valentine"). However, it is for his numbers with Norris (two originals, "A Child Is Born" and a powerful version of "Well You Needn't") that this fine hard bop-oriented CD is most highly recommended. ~ Scott Yanow, AMG |

1958, 1964: Sarah Vaughan - Live in '58 & '64 |
Vocal Jazz, Online-Video |

 |
Artist: Sarah Vaughan Album: Live in Sweden '58 Live in Holland '58 Live in Sweden '64 Label: Reelin' In The Years Productions & Naxos Years: 1958, 1964 Release: 2007 Format: Online-video Sound: Mono AMG Rating: Sarah Vaughan is heard in three separate television programs in this excellent Jazz Icons DVD. The first program, taped in Sweden in 1958, is a studio recording with no audience, though she speaks to the television viewers. She doesn't seem completely relaxed in this setting, though there's nothing wrong with her rich vocals. Among the highlights are "Tenderly" (which became a perennial request), "September in the Rain" (which didn't last long, she recorded it just once) and an upbeat, swinging "Mean to Me." The same band supports her for a Holland program videotaped a month earlier, though she is beautifully dressed in a sparkling gown with a much more appealing set as a backdrop, and Vaughan is performing for a live audience, all of which make a big difference in her performances. Her moving rendition of "Over the Rainbow" is breathtaking; she perfectly captures the innocence in the lyrics to "Lover Man," and she soars in the up-tempo arrangement of "Cherokee" as well. The third program comes from a 1964 concert for Swedish television. A new group is on hand with pianist Kirk Stuart, bassist Buster Williams (near the very beginning of his career), and drummer George Hughes. Vaughan's persona had changed over the years, as evidenced by a deeper voice and an obvious ease in performing for an audience. She is amazing in her interpretation of "I Feel Pretty," and she swings in "I Got Rhythm" and "Honeysuckle Rose." The full power of her voice is apparent in her dazzling take of "Misty" and also the stunning "Maria." Patricia Willard's detailed liner notes and the outstanding packaging, including numerous photos, make this release the most essential DVD for Sarah Vaughan fans to purchase. ~ Ken Dryden, AMG |

Jan Garbarek & Bobo Stenson Trio - Dansere |

Artist: Jan Garbarek & Bobo Stenson Trio Album: Dansere Label:Ecm Records Release:1975 Format:flack Time: 38:09 Size:200 mb Among the many stylistic twists and turns negotiated by Jan Garbarek early in his career, the subtle shift in direction from the previous, spectacular Witchi-Tai-To to Dansere was probably the most decisive. In fact, Dansere, recorded in 1975, was one of the first examples of what would come to be known as the "ECM sound," not so much for the usual crystalline recording quality but for a creeping, languidly pastoral sensibility that would become more and more prominent both in Garbarek's own work as well as in the label's releases in general. Still, that granola and Birkenstock aura is subdued enough in this album to grudgingly recommend it to fans of his earlier work. Bassist Palle Danielsson, while less angular and experimental than Arild Andersen, provides a solid and propulsive foundation for Garbarek and Stenson, the former tending to increasingly rein in his playing as the influence of Albert Ayler, so prominent in his first albums, continued to wane. Instead, one can hear traces of Keith Jarrett, with whom Garbarek had recently been working and, indeed, much of Dansere compares favorably with Jarrett's quartet work from around the same time. Fans of his subsequent work with the Hilliard Ensemble might find this relatively tough sledding while lovers of albums like Tryptikon could well hear excessive smoothness, but it stands up decently enough on its own merits.~ Brian Olewnick, All Music Guide |

Jan Garbarek With Bobo Stenson - Witchi-Tai-To |
Post-bop, Modern Jazz, Freejazz |
 |
 |
Artists: Jan Garbarek & Bobo Stenson Quartet ALbum: Witchi-Tai-To Label: Ecm Records Release: 1973 Format: FLAC Size: 250 mb Long before he became the standard-bearer for the "ECM sound," churning out discs with a mildly medieval or Scandinavian flavor spiced with enough new age fluff to guarantee sales, Jan Garbarek produced a string of superb albums, culminating in Witchi-Tai-To, his masterpiece. Intriguingly, with the exception of Palle Danielsson's "Kukka," all of the pieces here are cover versions, largely culled from the then burgeoning Jazz Composers Orchestra catalog or related musicians. It opens with Carla Bley's "A.I.R.," an incredibly infectious melody heard on her Escalator Over the Hill. Garbarek's soprano slithers sensuously around the theme, searching for and finding all manner of variations, while Stenson, a chameleon-like pianist who shows aspects of Jarrett, Tyner, and Alice Coltrane, makes all the right choices in support. Charlie Haden used the Carlos Puebla composition "Hasta Siempre" as a cornerstone for his Liberation Music Orchestra, and Garbarek rips into it with total romantic gusto; his tenor playing has never sounded more robust, muscular, or inspired. . . . |

Ultimate Jewish Music Collection is a collection of orchestral takes on classic Jewish themes and celebratory songs. The album covers a wide variety of music, from the dark and rumbling "This Land Is Mine: Exodus" to the ethereal beauty of "Eli Eli." Although many of these songs are available in several versions already, the renditions found on this album stand out not only because of their power but because of how seriously the musicians take the material. It is this view of the music as epic and grand that separates this from many Jewish music collections (many of which performs these in a folk style). This album would be great for anyone who would like all of these songs in their collection, as well as someone who may have the songs but is looking for classier renditions. ~ Bradley Torreano, All Music Guide |

Ben Webster - 100 Centennial Celebration |

Artist: Ben Webster Album: 100 Centennial Celebration Label: OJC Recording Date: Sep 11, 1956-1963 Release Date: Mar 10, 2009 Format, bitrate: mp3, 320kb/s Size:126MB The centennial of Ben Webster's birth occurred in 2009 and producer Nick Phillips mined the vaults of various Concord-owned labels, including Pablo, Riverside, Contemporary, and Prestige/Swingville, to create this compilation featuring the late tenor saxophonist. One of the three giants of his instrument during the 1930s and 1940s (along with Coleman Hawkins and Lester Young), Webster was still very much at the top of his game when these sessions were recorded. When he took part in the series of small-group dates with Art Tatum, he refused to be intimidated by the pianist's intricate flourishes, simply delivering majestic solos in "My One and Only Love," "All the Things You Are," and "Have You Met Miss Jones." He's very comfortable with old friends Benny Carter and Barney Bigard in an easygoing setting of Carter's "Lula." The two live tracks, "Caravan" and "Georgia on My Mind" taken from At the Renaissance, also find Webster in an inspired mood, supported by a rhythm section including pianist Jimmy Rowles and guitarist Jim Hall. But the most overlooked material is from his meeting with Austrian pianist Joe Zawinul, who was also Webster's roommate at the time, which is highlighted by the richly textured "Travelin' Light." Most Ben Webster fans likely already own all of the individual albums from which this was assembled, but for everyone else, this is an excellent introduction to the tenor saxophonist.~ Ken Dryden, All Music Guide |

All-Star White House Tribute to Duke Ellington |

 |
Artist: Various Artists Album: All-Star White House Tribute to Duke Ellington Label: Blue Note Year: 1969 Release: 2002 Format, bitrate: mp3, 320 kb/s Time: 1:15:34 Size: 180 Mb In 1969, President Richard Nixon threw a 70th birthday party for Duke Ellington at the White House, where he awarded the maestro the Medal of Freedom. The Voice of America's Willis Conover organized the band and performers for the occasion, which included Bill Berry, Clark Terry, J.J. Johnson, Urbie Green, Paul Desmond, Gerry Mulligan, Jim Hall, Billy Taylor, Hank Jones, Dave Brubeck, Earl Hines, Milt Hinton, Louie Bellson, Joe Williams and Mary Mayo. Ellington himself performed an original called "Pat," in honor of the President's wife. Tapes of the event have now been made into an album, 28 tunes in all, and all from the Ellington or Ellington and Billy Strayhorn portfolio. Most of the performances are short, and organized jamming is the order of the day, although Mulligan's fine arranging hand is evident on "Prelude to a Kiss," "Ring Dem Bells" and elsewhere. Although there's nothing earth shattering here, everyone plays or sings up to his customary professional standard. And the performances do remind us what a unique sound each of these musicians had. (I wonder if we could assemble a comparably identifiable group today.) Highlights include the Terry-Berry duet on "Just Squeeze Me"; Desmond's sweet tone and interesting note choices on "In a Mellotone" and "Things Ain't What They Used to Be"; Mulligan's lovely playing on "Warm Valley"; the Hinton and Bellson duet on "Caravan"; Williams' grand voice on "Come Sunday" and "Heritage"; and Green's superb tone on "I Got It Bad (And That Ain't Good)." The album is all music. No speeches or announcements. As a record of one of the most significant government events to honor jazz and a jazz musician in this country, this album is definitely worth owning. - Owen Cordle at JazzTimes |
