Michael Franks - The Michael Franks Anthology: The Art of Love |

Artist: Michael Franks Album: The Michael Franks Anthology: The Art of Love Label: Warner Year: 1980-1991 / Release: 2003 Format, bitrate: mp3, 320kb/s Size: 169+162MB(2CD) With his sly, subtle blend of jazz, Brazilian music, and folk-rock, Michael Franks may be a bit of an acquired taste, which is why Rhino's double-disc, 31-track The Michael Franks Anthology: The Art of Love may not be the best way to get acquainted with his music -- there's simply to much to absorb at once. But for those who already have become a convert to his sophisticated soft pop, this is the ultimate anthology, providing an exhaustive but not exhausting overview of his Warner recordings from the mid-'70s to the mid-'90s. All the hits are here, along with a sharp selection of album tracks, pretty much rounding up all the highlights from his rich, extensive career. Diehards will still want the albums, but serious fans who want just one Michael Franks album will need this. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music Guide |

1954-1958: The Count Basie Bunch - Cool Too |
Swing, Basie Count |
 |
 |
Artist: The Count Basie Bunch Album: Cool Too Year: 1954 - 1958 Label: Vanguard Format, bitrate: mp3, 320 kbps Size: 145mb Although this reissue was released under the name the Count Basie Bunch, only a few of the selections actually employ Count Basie. Rather, Cool Too is a collection of excellent 1954-58 small-group recordings that are led by such Basie sidemen as trumpeters Buck Clayton & Joe Newman and drummer Jo Jones (not to be confused with Philly Joe Jones, another famous jazz drummer). John Hammond, who produced the recordings for Vanguard, had a strong passion for Basie-type swing -- so it isn't surprising that he successfully brought together so many Basie associates in the 1950s. Some of the high points of this CD range from Frank Wess' soulful tenor sax on "The Sleeper" and Vic Dickenson's expressive trombone on "Good Morning Blues" to Clayton's robust trumpet on "Blues Blasé" and "Ballin' the Jack." Vocalist Joe Williams, who was Jimmy Rushing's most important successor in the Basie band, is in fine form on live performances of "More than One for My Baby" and "I Want a Little Girl," both of which were recorded live in New York in 1956 and come from the album A Night at Count Basie's. For swing fans, Cool Too is highly recommended. ~ Alex Henderson allmusic.com |

Herbie Mann - Hold On, I'm Comin' |

Artist: Herbie Mann Album: Hold On, I'm Comin' Label: Atlantic Year: 1972 Format, bitrate: Mp3, 320 kbps Time: 38:17 Size: 88.8 MB AMG Rating: This is one of the best Herbie Mann recordings and arguably his most rewarding of the 1970s. This long out of print LP features the leader/flutist, David Newman (on tenor and flute), the avant-garde guitarist Sonny Sharrock, and a fine backup rhythm section (electric pianist Pat Rebillot, bassist Andy Muson, and drummer Reggie Ferguson) stretching out on a variety of R&Bish material including "Respect Yourself," "Memphis Underground," and "Hold on, I'm Comin'." The high quality of the solos and the spirited ensembles (which were inspired by the audience at the 1972 New York Jazz Festival) make this a generally memorable session. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide |

Eddie Calvert, known as the man with the golden trumpet, was born in Preston, Lancashire on the 15th March 1922 as Albert Edward Calvert. As a child he was exposed to his family's love of brass band music and he learned to play many brass instruments but concentrated on the trumpet. He joined the Preston Town Silver Band at the age of 11 but the war interrupted his musical career and by the late 1940s he returned to play in various amateur brass bands, eventually moving to the professional circuit with the dance bands Geraldo and Billy Ternet. Going solo, he appeared on TV with the Stanley Black Orchestra. He signed to the Columbia label, part of the EMI group and released an instrumental trumpet version of the German song Oh Mein Papa which had most famously been covered in English as Oh My Papa by Eddie Fisher. Calvert's instrumental easily won the chart battle in the UK and it remained at no.1 for nine weeks at the beginning of 1954. Over a year later he was involved in another chart battle for supremacy with the song Cherry Pink And Apple Blossom White and this time it was much closer with both his and a very similar trumpet version by Perez Prado reaching no.1 in the Spring of 1955. Several other hits followed including a version of Stranger In Paradise, John And Julie and Mandy, while Little Serenade was his final hit in June 1958. When the 1960s provided no change of fortune, Calvert moved away to settle in South Africa where he lived out the remainder of his life, dying on the 7th of August 1978. ~ Sharon Mawer, AMG |

The Complete Original Dixieland Jazz Band (1917-1936) |

Artist: Original Dixieland Jazz Band Album: The Complete Original Dixieland Jazz Band Label: RCA Year: 1917 - 1936 Release: 1995 Format, bitrate: MP3@ 192kbps Time: 105:05 Size: 140 Mb This double-CD has all of the Victor recordings of the first jazz group to record, The Original Dixieland Jazz Band. The five-piece New Orleans band, which essentially stuck exclusively to ensembles, set the standard for 1917-21 jazz. Their "Livery Stable Blues" (which found the horns imitating barnyard animals) was a big hit, and The ODJB introduced such future Dixieland standards as "Original Dixieland One-Step," "At the Jazz Band Ball," "Fidgety Feet," "Sensation," "Clarinet Marmalade," "Jazz Me Blues," "Royal Garden Blues," and "Tiger Rag." The 23 numbers from 1917-21 (which are rounded out by the humorous "Bow Wow Blues (My Mama Treats Me like a Dog)") were reissued on a single CD by Bluebird, but this two-fer also has The ODJB's "comeback" recordings of 1936; six titles by the original five members, plus eight very rare titles which find The ODJB forming the nucleus of a musical, if not too distinctive, big band. Important historical music. ~ AMG, Scott Yanow |

Pat Metheny - Offramp |

Artist: Pat Metheny Album: Offramp Label: ECM Year: 1982 Format, bitrate: MP3, 320 kbps Size: 91mb AMG Rating If 1980's As Falls Wichita, So Falls Wichita Falls was defined by Pat Metheny's charisma, its less accessible but certainly rewarding successor, Offramp, finds him leaning more toward the abstract. But as cerebral as Metheny gets on such atmospheric pieces as "Are You Going with Me?" and "Au Lait," his playing remains decidedly lyrical and melodic. Clearly influenced by Jim Hall, the thoughtful Metheny makes excellent use of space, choosing his notes wisely and reminding listeners that, while he has heavy-duty chops, he's not one to beat everybody over the head with them. Even when he picks up the tempo for the difficult and angular title song, he shuns empty musical acrobatics. Throughout the CD, Metheny enjoys a powerful rapport with keyboardist Lyle Mays, who also avoids exploiting his technique and opts for meaningful storytelling. ~ Alex Henderson, All Music Guide |

Artist: Chie Ayado Album: To You Year: 2006 Label: EWE Records Format, bitrate: MP3, 320 kbps Size: 119 MB Chie Ayado is perhaps a new name to the American jazz fan, but in her native Japan, Ayado has long been a star, with literally millions of records sold. Ayado's label, EWE, turns in analog recordings of stunning quality, and To You certainly is no exception. This is a pure, stripped-down recording of vocal and piano, all lush and warm. Add in Kevin Gray's mastering work, a 180-gram pressing, and you've got the makings of a dark horse special. Store.Acousticsounds.com |
