1950-1951: Count Basie Swing, Basie Count
1950-1951: Count Basie
    Artist: Count Basie
    Album: 1950 - 1951
    Label: Classics
    Release: 2002
    Format: mp3, 256kb/s
    Size: 85mb
    AMG Rating: 1950-1951: Count Basie

Having weathered the same upheavals in the music business that knocked many other bandleaders right off of the scene, William "Count" Basie calmly persevered by recording with septets and octets, occasionally finding it possible to assemble the 16-piece orchestra that he loved to lead. The scaled-down ensembles heard on this disc were fortified with brilliant young players who were capable of swinging hard while expanding the music in new and exciting directions. The eight-piece group that recorded in February of 1950 -- this was Basie's last session for Victor -- served up a perfect blend of established styles and innovative ideas. "If You See My Baby" is a swinging recipe for instant gratification. "Sweets," arranged by Buck Clayton, features exceptionally fine muted trumpeting by Harry Edison. What really makes this session valuable, though, is the presence of tenor saxophonist Gene Ammons. His best moments come during "Rat Race," an upbeat cruise with a very modern introduction. After a powerful solo, he engages in a bit of tenor jousting with Georgie Auld. The anomaly here is "Solid As a Rock," a weird attempt at a love song sung by the Deep River Boys, a holdover vocal group from the early '40s. With "Neal's Deal," listeners officially encounter the Basie sound of the 1950s. This has a lot to do with Neal Hefti, whose spiffy melodies and clear, clean arrangements practically defined the new style that would become closely associated with the Basie bands. ...

Tomasz Stanko - Freedom In August    Artist: Tomasz Stanko
Album: Wolnosc w Sierpniu (Freedom in August)
    Release: 2005
    Label: FiRe
    Format, bitrate: FLAC (tracks)
    Size: 160 MB

"Wolnosc w Sierpniu (Freedom in August) is an independent Polish release written for the Warsaw Rising Museum, which opened in August, 2004 to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the fight for Warsaw. Stanko was commissioned to write a suite of music for use by the museum, working here with an augmented version of his current quartet with pianist Marcin Wasilewski, bassist Slawomir Kurkiewicz, and drummer Michal MiÅkiewicz. Stanko's characteristic openness imbues these six tracks totalling just under half an hour of music. However, the addition of the Polish Radio Orchestra's string section, as well as synthesizer, percussion, and saxophone—the latter played by Tomasz Szukalski, a Stanko collaborator since the 1970s—creates a more broadly-textured work, a stronger blend of Stanko the composer with Stanko the improviser."

Art Farmer - Early Art
    Artist: Art Farmer
    Album: Early Art
    Label: New Jazz/OJC
    Year: 1954
    Genre: Hard Bop
    Format, bitrate: MP3, 224kb/s
    Time:41:52
    Size: 43 MB

Two of trumpeter Art Farmer's earlier sessions as a leader are reissued on this CD in the OJC series. Farmer teams up with an all-star quintet (which includes tenor-saxophonist Sonny Rollins, pianist Horace Silver, bassist Percy Heath and drummer Kenny Clarke) for four songs and dominates a quartet (with pianist Wynton Kelly, bassist Addison Farmer and drummer Herbie Lovelle) on six other tunes. Farmer's sound is lyrical even on the uptempo pieces and he is heard throughout in his early prime. Highlights include "Soft Shoe," "I'll Take Romance," "Autumn Nocturne" and an uptempo "Gone with the Wind." One should note that the programming differs from what is listed, with "Soft Shoe" (which should have been the opener) actually appearing fifth and the songs listed as appearing second through fifth moving up to first through fourth. Despite that flaw, the music is quite enjoyable and a must for 1950s bop collectors.

Jon Faddis - Remembrances   Artist: Jon Faddis
   Album: Remembrances
   Label: Chesky Records
   Year: 1998
   Format, bitrate: MP3@320kbps
   Time: 67:13
   Size: 162 Mb

REMEMBRANCES was nominated for a 1999 Grammy for Best Large Jazz Ensemble Performance.

This is an unusual date for Jon Faddis. Doubling on flugelhorn, Faddis avoids his upper register and performs ballads while backed by an ensemble arranged by Carlos Franzetti. The backup group consists of five reeds, trombone, a french horn, an occasional oboe or English horn player and a rhythm section. Faddis plays lyrically throughout but there are no exciting or stirring moments to be heard on the ten selections which include "Sophisticated Lady," "Speak Like a Child" "In Your Own Sweet Way" and a medium-tempo "Goodbye." A well-played and professionally arranged program but the overall results are rather forgettable.

REPOST with new link from Mr.Bubu Hans

'In its present form, the Oscar Peterson Trio has been working together for the last several years, and it is increasingly a unit where teamwork is the watchword. Not long ago, Peterson himself told a Down Beat critic that his current major aim was in perfecting the unity of his trio as well as his own pianistics. "What helps one, though, helps the other," Peterson said. "And we all get better togther - as a trio." ' (from the original liner notes)

Forget "value for money" and buy this album for its first two, quite superb tracks: "The Healer" - one of the most distinctive and atmospheric records ever made, featuring marvellously controlled & quite electrifying interactions between Hooker's deep chanting vocals, Carlos Santana's soaring guitar breaks and their wonderfully tight latin/blues backing band - and, "I'm in the Mood" - an equally electrifying, broodingly erotic interaction between a very old man and a much younger lady (Bonnie Raitt) whose shared love of the blues makes the tension of their implausible combination permeate every bar of its vocal & guitar cross-talk. Breath-taking stuff !
