1958: Count Basie - Count On The Coast vol.2 |
Swing, Basie Count |
 |
 |
Artist: Count Basie Album: Count On The Coast vol.2 Label: Phontastic Year: 1958 Release: 2000 Format, bitrate: mp3, 320kbs Size: 130mb Like the earlier companion first volume, this CD includes selections from an extended stay by the Count Basie Orchestra at the Crescendo Club in Los Angeles in 1958. The set includes both hits from several eras ("One O'Clock Jump" and "April in Paris") and newer material by Neal Hefti ("Teddy the Toad" and "Scoot") and Frank Foster ("Who, Me?" and "Shiny Stockings," which became a hit). The band is in great form, though none of the soloists is acknowledged by name. But vocalist Joe Williams steals the show with his enthusiastic, infectious rendition of "Smack Dab in the Middle" and the happy-go-lucky blues "I've Got a Girl." Clearly this was a band that wasn't content to rely strictly on past successes, but was continuing to grow since the band wasn't recorded in concert very often during this time frame. This CD should be of special interest to Count Basie enthusiasts.~by Ken Dryden |

1958: Count Basie - Count On The Coast vol.1 |
Swing, Basie Count |
 |
 |
Artist: Count Basie Album: Count On The Coast vol.1 Label: Phontastic Year: 1958 Rlease: 2000 Format, bitrate: mp3, 320kbs Size: 130mb It was nearly impossible to catch the Count Basie Orchestra in anything other than top form and this is the case with this CD recorded during a West Coast tour in the summer of 1958. Since the engineer remains deliberately anonymous, it is likely the band may not have been aware it was being recorded, but the stereo sound is excellent, though Basie's piano is hard to pick up at times. The play list is a nice mix of songs long associated with the band ("Moten Swing" and "Swingin' the Blues"), newer contributions by Neal Hefti ("Flight of the Foo Birds," the very popular "Cute," and "Li'l Darling") as well as some obscurities ("Blue on Blue" and "Slats"). Most of the tracks run under five minutes and there's plenty of solo space spread around between the band's members, plus two features for singer Joe Williams ("No Moon at All" and his hit "Well, Allright, Okay, You Win"). Although the location is not stated, the music comes from two or more sets at the Crescendo Club in Los Angeles. Fans of Count Basie will want to look for this Swedish release on the Phontastic label, as well as the companion second volume.~by Ken Dryden |

Tommy Castro, Jimmy Hall, Lloyd Jones - Triple Trouble |

Artist: Tommy Castro, Jimmy Hall, Lloyd Jones Album: Triple Trouble Label: Telarc ASIN: B0000AN4IG Year: 2003 Genre: Texas Blues Format mp3, bitrate:320 kbps Size: 119MB AMG Album ID R 653382   All-star jams can go two ways. They either turn out a muddled mess, or inspire everyone involved to new heights of musical synergy. Fortunately for blues, R&B, and soul fans, Triple Trouble belongs firmly in the latter category. It helps that Castro, Jones (guitar), and Hall (sax, harmonica) have different strengths, which complement one another nicely. It also helps having the renowned Double Trouble on board; one couldn’t ask for a tighter, tastier backup band. Together, this group ranges all over the musical map, from traditionally-inflected blues ("Raised in the Country") to James Brown-style funk ("Cold Funk"). With Telarc Records’ clean, crisp production every note comes out clear, showcasing these three artists to their best advantage. They might not be superstars, but they’ve got their mojo workin’. -- Genevieve WilliamsÈãðà ñëîâ â íàçâàíèè ýòîãî äèñêà ïðîçðà÷íà, êàê "Ðóññêèé Ñòàíäàðò": à) âîêàëèñòîâ òðîå; á) àêêîìïàíèðóåò èì ðèòì-ñåêöèÿ ãðóïïû Ñòèâè Ðýÿ Âîýíà Double Trouble. |

Eden Atwood - Waves: Bossa Nova Session |

Artist: Eden Atwood Album: Waves: Bossa Nova Session Label: Groove Note Year: 2002 Format, bitrate: MP3, 320 kbps + FLAC & MP3@320 Size: 125 mb + 340 MB & 137 MB Time: 60:58 REPOST with new links for lossless & MP3@320 from Mr. con1 After a six-year span since making her final recording for Concord, singer Eden Atwood's triumphant return to the studio exudes a confidence that some writers think was lacking in her earlier work. With first-rate arrangements by pianist Bill Cunliffe and a supporting cast including alto saxophonist and flutist Pete Christlieb, guitarist Anthony Wilson, bassist Darek Oles, drummer Joe LaBarbera, and percussionist Scott Breadman, Atwood delves into memorable tunes by Antonio Carlos Jobim ("Meditation," "The Girl From Ipanema," and "He's a Carioca") as well as bossa nova treatments of Duke Ellington's overlooked gem "Don't You Know I Care?," Irving Berlin's "How Deep Is the Ocean?," and the Beatles' "The Fool on the Hill" with equal success. Her playful side comes through in the delightful "O Pato," while she doesn't overdo her emotions when interpreting a bittersweet ballad such as Michel Legrand's "Once Upon a Summertime." She also wrote lyrics for Jobim's mellow ballad "Carminos Cruzados." This long overdue comeback release by one of the promising young jazz singers to emerge during the 1990s is warmly recommended. ~ Ken Dryden, All Music Guide |

Frank Sinatra - September of My Years |

Artist: Frank Sinatra Album: September of My Years Label: Reprise Year: 1965 Format, bitrate: MP3, 320 Kbps Time: 45:19 Size: 91,3 MB September of My Years is one of Frank Sinatra's triumphs of the '60s, an album that consolidated his strengths while moving him into new territory, primarily in terms of tone. More than the double-disc set A Man and His Music — which was released a year after this album — September of My Years captures how Sinatra was at the time of his 50th birthday. Gordon Jenkins' rich, stately, and melancholy arrangements give the album an appropriate reflective atmosphere. Most of the songs are new or relatively recent numbers; every cut fits into a loose theme of aging, reflection, and regret. Sinatra, however, doesn't seem stuck in his ways — though the songs are rooted in traditional pop, they touch on folk and contemporary pop. As such, the album offered a perfect summary, as well as suggesting future routes for the singer. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, AMG |

Big Twist & The Mellow Fellows - Playing For Keeps |

 |
Artist: Big Twist & The Mellow Fellows Album: Playing for Keeps Label: Alligator Year: 1983 Release: 1983 Format, bitrate: Mp3, 192 kbps Time: 35,08 Size: 49,2 Mb. Twist's adopted theme song, the Willie Dixon-penned "300 Pounds of Heavenly Joy," hails from this goodtime collection, co-produced by tenor-sax legend Gene "Daddy G" Barge. --- Larry "Big Twist" Nolan heartily epitomized the image "300 pounds of heavenly joy." Based in Chicago, the huge singer and his trusty R&B band, the Mellow Fellows, were one of the hottest draws on the Midwestern college circuit during the 1980s with a slickly polished sound modeled on the soul-slanted approach of Bobby Bland, Little Milton, and Tyrone Davis. Twist started out singing and playing drums in rough-and-tumble country bars in downstate Illinois during the late '50s and early '60s (chicken wire-enclosed stages were a necessity on this raucous scene). Young saxist Terry Ogolini jammed often with the big man at a joint called Junior's in a Prairie State burg called Colp. Ogolini and guitarist Pete Special spearheaded the nucleus of the first edition of the Mellow Fellows in the college town of Carbondale during the early '70s, with Twist doubling on drums. After taking southern Illinois by storm, the unit relocated en masse to Chicago in 1978. . . . |

Art Tatum - Piano Starts Here |

Artist: Art Tatum Album: Piano Starts Here Label: Sony BMG Year: 2007 Format, bitrate: AAC, 160 kpbs Size: 50 MB Art Tatum’s “Piano Starts Here” album contains material that has been in print for more than 50 years. Yet the original, an incomparable jazz album that highlights the mastery of this singular musician, had been marred by nominal sound quality and other imperfections — until now. Zenph’s unique technique turns audio recordings into live performances that precisely replicate the original recording, but offer vastly improved sound quality. Listeners are transported back to the moment of creation and experience Tatum’s playing as if they were in the room when the original recordings were made. Last year, Sony BMG and Zenph Studios re-recorded Tatum’s 1949 concert at The Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles. They placed the piano on the same stage in the same spot that Tatum played and recorded a flawless re-performance on modern equipment before a live audience. SONY BMG’s new disc is a hybrid surround-sound SACD/CD disc, which plays on all traditional CD players and sounds magnificent on Super Audio (SACD) players. It also includes a binaural version of the re-performance that provides an immersive experience. When listened to with headphones, it replicates what Tatum would have heard while he sat on the piano bench. The Zenph re-performance also corrects several problems with the original album. For one thing, playback speed was too slow on 12 of the 13 tracks, so after Zenph fixed the tempo, you hear that Tatum actually played faster than has been thought. |

Artist: Oscar Peterson Trio Album: Night Train (LP) Label: Verve Records Year: 1962 Format, bitrate: mp3 320 kb/s (vinyl rip) Time: 44:15 Size: 102 Mb AMG Rating: EVERY DAY IS AN OSCAR PETERSON DAY ! "Night Train" is one of the most successful and accomplished Oscar Peterson Trio albums, already present in the JazzBluesClub catalogue in the CD remastered and bonus tracks version. After a long and tiring work of eliminating the different cracks and crunches from scratches, we are finally able to present you the original vinyl LP as it was released at the end of year 1962 (beginning of 1963). Enjoy the beautiful analog version and make a comparison. The interesting thing about this album is the fact that there were 4 limited editions of it (all on vinyl) called "Night Train vol.I" - "Night Train vol. IV" containing alternate takes and original materials all taken from the same sessions as the album. According to the present information, only volume I was edited on CD up to now (Some af the alternative takes appear on the reamastered version too). . . . |
