Nat King Cole - Love is the Thing ...and more (1957-62) |

Artist: Nat King Cole Album: Love is the Thing ...and more Label: Capitol Years: 1957 - 1962; release: 1987 Format, bitrate: MP3@ 320 kbit/s Time: 0.46:18 Size: 107 MB This 1996 gold audiophile CD reissue of a 1956 Nat "King" Cole vocal set is augmented by three numbers taken from his similar 1963 album Where Did Everyone Go? By the mid-'50s, Cole was primarily known to the general public as a superb ballad vocalist, and he sticks exclusively to that role on these 15 selections, which include "When I Fall in Love," "Stardust," "Love Letters," and "When Sunny Gets Blue." On both dates, he is accompanied by a string orchestra arranged and conducted by Gordon Jenkins, so the jazz content is quite low. However, listeners who want to hear why Nat "King" Cole was so popular during the era (and those who love the sound of his voice) will enjoy this fine reissue. ~ Review by Scott Yanow, AMG. Artist - Oscar Peterson Album - The London Concert Original Release Date: October 21, 1978 Audio CD: November 22, 1993 Number of Discs: 2 Label: Pablo Quality: MP3@320kbit/s Size: 99 + 99 + 12 MB Time: 92:46 REPOST with new liks from Mr.Bubu Hans This two-CD set, which reissues a Pablo two-LP release, features pianist Oscar Peterson in a strong and supportive trio with bassist John Heard and drummer Louis Bellson. Although his sidemen get some solo space, the focus is primarily on the remarkable pianist on a variety of standards, his own "Hogtown Blues" and a six-song Duke Ellington medley. Whether it be on... More rapid stomps or sensitive ballads, this trio (which was in reality an all-star pickup group) sounds as if they had worked together regularly for years. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide |

A chance for Brubeck to spotlight his singular playing style while showcasing his own compositions (of these nine, "In My Own Sweet Way," and "The Duke" would go on to become jazz standards). No complaints, and Brubeck's long been underrated at the piano though the magic of Brubeck's musical interplay with Paul Desmond is missed. Repost with new lossless link from hungaropitecus |

Poncho Sanchez - Latin Soul (1999) |
Music » Jazz » Latin |

Artist: Poncho Sanchez Album: Latin Soul Format: FLAC Size: 393 MB (scans) Label: Concord Picante Total time: 71:14 Recorded live at two leading California nightspots, Yoshi's in Oakland and the Latin-specializing Conga Room in Los Angeles (the actual sound in the Conga Room is never as good as that on this CD), Concord no doubt hoped for an exceptionally hot live session from this tireless defender of the Latin jazz tradition. What they got was merely a decent album, listenable, danceable, yet lacking that extra flash of Latin fire. Sanchez leads his usual eight-piece ensemble -- augmented at Yoshi's by Mike Whitman on baritone sax -- and feeds the percussive polyrhythmic battles with his congas (as well as a turn on the timbales on "Guaripumpe"). On the "Latin soul" agenda, there is a dead-on faithful rendition of "Watermelon Man," with a few histrionic things at the close, and a reprise of Eddie Harris' "Cold Duck Time," which soon turns into "Listen Here" and "Everything I Play Gonh Be Funky." There are also some spirited passings of the bop baton from trumpeter Sal Cracchiolo to trombonist Francisco Torres to tenor saxophonist Scott Martin and back again on "Ican." - by Richard S. Artist - Buddy Bregman and His Orchestra Album - Swinging Kicks Label - Verve Year - 1956, release - 1999 Quality - MP3@320 kbps Size - 82,6 mb Total time - 38:46 AMG Rating Best known as an arranger for singers and for commercial sessions, Buddy Bregman led one full-fledged jazz instrumental date, Swinging Kicks. Because many of the selections are brief (seven are under two minutes) and due to the intriguing titles, this seems a bit like a soundtrack to a film that was never made. However, few of the tracks seem truncated and there are some excellent solos along the way, particularly from Ben Webster, Conte Candoli, Herb Geller, Bud Shank, and Paul Smith. The personnel changes from cut to cut, ranging from a 19-piece big band with screaming trumpet playing from Maynard Ferguson and Conrad Gozzo to various combos, a Ben Webster/Andrй Previn duet on "Kicks Is in Love," and a rapid workout for Paul Smith on "Go Kicks." Bregman uses some of the top West Coast jazz players and various musicians who were on Verve at the time, with Stan Getz making a guest appearance on "Honey Chile." Recommended. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide |

Artist: Jack Costanzo Album: Back From Havana Year: 2000 Release: 2001 Label: Cubop Format, bitrate: MP3, 320 kbps Time: 1:07:33 Size: 149,6 MB AMG Rating: Mr. Bongo, King of the Afro-Cuban Jazz - he has a lot of names - Jack Costanzo presents his first 21st-century album. Each composition is accompanied by his personal comments, which lead a listener through each track with a cheerful mood, as well as provide some quite interesting facts. I have to say I really, really, like this album. Actually it's a smoking, cooking, boiling, and whatever-terminology-is-new album. Many thanks to Michael and Jody McFadin for giving me the opportunity to record with CuBop Records. Special thanks to Bobby Matos, who produced and contributed a ton of stuff to this CD. I think Marilu is on her way! Good Luck Lady! You're sensational. Our appreciation to Ron Compton of Fanfare Studios for giving us a great mix. Jack Costanzo Jack Costanzo is one of the most important pioneers in popularizing Afro-Cuban jazz, playing bongos with Stan Kenton in 1947 on many influential recordings and being a member of the highly visible Nat King Cole Trio from 1949-53. . . . |

Artist: The Nat King Cole Trio Album: The Complete Capitol Recordings Of The Nat King Cole Trio Years Recorded: 1942 -1961 Year Released: 1991 Label: Mosaic Format, bitrate: MP3@320 kbit/s Number Of CD's 18 Size: 1.57 GB AMG Rating - 5 starsREPOST with a new booklet link If you needed proof that Nat King Cole was a real jazz musician (and not just simply a crooner), this highly sought-after, out-of-print collection will settle that issue once and for all. Long before "Mona Lisa" and "Unforgettable" made him a star, Nat King Cole was laying down some tasty jazz with his trios, whose core members included at various times Oscar Moore, Red Callendar, Johnny Miller, Irving Ashby and Joe Comfort. None other than Oscar Peterson stated that he was influenced by Nat King Cole, whose Nat King Cole Trio album he considered ”a complete musical thesaurus for any aspiring jazz pianist.” This magnificent 18 CD collection offers all of Nat's trio work for Capitol Records recorded from 1942 to 1961. The high level of musicianship, thoughtful arrangements and intimate interplay make these trio recordings equally as satisfying to the casual or critical listener and an enduring testament to what a great jazz artist Nat King Cole was before becoming a pop star. An absolute must-have for any serious jazz fan. |
