Duke Ellington - The Popular (1966) |
Music » Jazz » Swing |
 |
 |
Label: RCA Victor Year: release 1997 Genre: Jazz, Big band, Swing Tracks: 12 Totl time: 47:26 Quality: MP3@320 kbps Size: AMG Rating: Duke Ellington - biography REPOST with new link This CD reissue features Duke Ellington and His Orchestra running through 11 of the leader's hits and a lesser-known blues tune, "The Twitch." The 1966 version of his big band still had all of its main stars, including such major voices as trumpeters Cootie Williams and Cat Anderson, trombonists Lawrence Brown and Buster Cooper, altoist Johnny Hodges, Paul Gonsalves on tenor, and clarinetist Jimmy Hamilton. All are featured on The Popular Duke Ellington. Since the material is all very familiar, and mostly quite concise (nothing over six minutes long, and a version of "Do Nothin' Till You Hear From Me" that is under two minutes), few surprises occur. But Ellington fans will enjoy this well-played effort. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide |

Artist: Jack Teagarden Album: The Chronological: 1930-1934 Year: 1996 [Record. Year: Oct 1, 1930-Mar 2, 1934] Label: Classics Format, bitrate: MP3@ 192kbps Time: 69:36 Size: 100 Mb This Classics CD has the first 23 titles ever issued under the leadership of trombonist Jack Teagarden. Many of these selections were formerly rare, particularly the earlier titles on Domino, Banner and Crown. Best is the session that co-starred pianist/vocalist Fats Waller and, while some of the titles are a bit commercial, Teagarden's playing (and that of his better sidemen) uplift the music; "A Hundred Years from Today" is a classic. ~ AMG, Scott Yanow |

Artist: Abbey Lincoln Album: Affair... a Story of a Girl in Love Label: Liberty Year: 1956, Release: 1993 (Japan) Format, bitrate: 320 kbp/s Time: 44:33 Size: 120 MB This CD reissues the music from Abbey Lincoln's first LP. Lincoln was at the time making the transition from a potential sex symbol and lounge singer to becoming a dramatic jazz interpreter. Her voice was recognizable even at this early stage but some of the ballads are more lightweight than the ones she would be performing in the near future. Backed by anonymous orchestras arraged by Benny Carter, Jack Montrose and Marty Paich, Abbey Lincoln's straightforward delivery was already impressive and pleasing. (by Scott Yanow - AMG) |

Nat King Cole Trio Transcriptions Vol.2 1939 |

Artist - Nat King Cole TrioAlbum - Nat King Cole Trio Transcriptions Vol.2 Label - Naxos Jazz Legends Year - 1939, release - 2001 Style - swing, vocal jazz Quality - MP3@320 kbps Size - 87,5 mb Total time - 53:26 Radio transcriptions made especially to be played on the air. The early trio is instantly recognizable and, although there is a greater reliance on group vocals and guest singers (including Bonnie Lake, Juanelda Carter, Pauline and Her Perils, and the Dreamers) rather than on Cole's solo vocals, the music is not all that different from what the King Cole Trio would be playing a few years later when they became much better known. During early 1939, after being briefly styled as "King Cole & His Trio", the group was re-christened "The King Cole Trio". Their transcriptions, issued on Keystone, MacGregor and Standard, included bop-style up-tempo numbers (Charlie Shaver's "Undecided" and Sy Oliver's "Taint What You Do", " It's "The way That You Do It" are fine examples) contrasting with sweet-swing arrangements of older, more tender standards, such as Richard Whiting's "Honey" and Irving Berlin's "Russian Lullaby" ~ Peter Dempsey, 2001, from liner note |

Artist: Dee Dee Bridgewater Album: Dear Ella Label: Emarcy Year: 1997 Release: 2009 Format, bitrate: mp3, 320kb/s Time: 59:10 Size: 135MB Repost DEAR ELLA won the 1998 Grammy Award for Best Jazz Vocal Performance. "Cotton Tail" won the 1998 Grammy Award for Best Instrumental Arrangement With Accompanying Vocal(s). Bridgewater's heartfelt tribute to Ella Fitzgerald is a resounding testament not only to the legendary jazz vocal icon, but also to Bridgewater's own faithful singing style, rich in Ella's tonal quality particularly on the high end. Her inflections are also quite natural, rather than self-effacing or forced. Some of the tracks vary in group size, as duo (with Kenny Burrell), trio (with Lou Levy leading on piano), or combo (with Milt Jackson, Antonio Hart, Grady Tate, Slide Hampton, and brother Cecil Bridgewater). Nine of the total 13 cuts have big-band backing, or orchestral settings arranged and conducted by John Clayton. "Midnight Sun" is perhaps the best of all ballads, and here Dee Dee sings with ravishingly lush, near-frightening efficiency. She cops Ella best on "Stairway to the Stars," with the piano trio leading and strings following along. She picks up on Ella's cutesiness for "A-Tisket, A-Tasket," while starting balladic, then swinging well during "Mr Paganini." Brother/trumpeter/arranger Cecil writes a neat call-and-response with horns and the singer on "Undecided," and they wail together in convincing, authentic fashion on "Lady Be Good." Andre Cecceralli, with the trio on "Mack the Knife," adds a dash of contemporary flavor. Bridgewater's finale "Dear Ella" is the end-all tribute with guitarist Burrell only as accompanist and author. They thank the legend for her enormous contributions which need no additional comment. This is certainly Dee Dee Bridgewater's most ambitious, and finest recorded production. You have to appreciate the reality of Fitzgerald's influence on thousands of musicians, but on this CD, it all comes home to roost. Highly recommended, for the singer's attitude and the brilliant backup musicians who nod in total agreement. ~ Michael G. Nastos, All Music Guide |

Artist: Eden Atwood Album: Cat on a Hot Tin Roof Label: Concord CCD-4599 Year: 1993 Release: 1994 Quality: FLAC & MP3@320 Size: 301 MB & 128 MB Time: 56:22 AMG Rating: Eden Atwood is a young singer whose appeal sometimes compensates on her second Concord release for a few shortcomings. She has a clear and attractive voice and is at her best on ballads but occasionally (as on "Not While I'm Around") borders on being a cabaret singer. In contrast, on the uptempo mateiral her scatting and improvising skills are not fully mature nor all that adventurous. To her credit she gives her sidemen (particularly Ken Peploski on clarinet and tenor) plenty of solo space on the more cooking material. Atwood does write intelligent lyrics (best are "Silent Movie" and "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof"), is quite expressive on the ballads and shows versatility but at this point she does not stand apart from the crowd of young jazz vocalists. Her future progress should be worth watching though. ~ Scott Yanow, AMG |

Artist: Toots Thielemans Album: One More for the Road Label: Verve Release Date: 05/09/2006 Format, bitrate: MP3, 320 kb/s Size: 90,6 + 35,4 MB; 128MB Repost with new a link from Mr. Bubu Hans These sessions by harmonica virtuoso Toots Thielemans are a mixed bag of vocal and instrumental interpretations of works by Harold Arlen. Unfortunately, the project comes across as more of a crossover date, featuring several vocalists who will be of little interest to many jazz fans, while conductor Jurre Haanstra's orchestrations are rather bland and sometimes a bit syrupy. Thielemans' own solos tend to be fairly short, while his regular pianist, Kenny Werner (switching to Fender Rhodes on a few tracks), isn't utilized enough as a soloist. The best selections include "This Time the Dream's on Me," which features Till Brönner on both trumpet and vocals in a warm and unpretentious setting, a campy treatment of "Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea" by Madeleine Peyroux, along with Trijntje Oosterhuis' warm rendition of the nearly forgotten "I Wonder What Became of Me." But several tracks don't make the cut, including Jamie Cullum's pop-infused "One for My Baby (And One More for the Road)," Beth Hart's dreadful "I Gotta Right to Sing the Blues," and urban contemporary singer Oleta Adams' lackluster version of "Stormy Weather." This CD falls short of being an essential Toots Thielemans release.~ Ken Dryden, All Music Guide |

Artists: Stan Getz, Zoot Sims, Al Cohn, Allen Eager & Brew Moore Album: The Brothers Label: Original Jazz Classics Years: 1949 - 1952, Release: 1989 Style: West Coast Jazz Format, bitrate: MP3@320 kbit/s Time: 43:43 Size: 183 MB AMG Rating: "Brothers" was a generic term, particularly for the tenor saxophonists (Getz, Sims, Al Cohn, Herbie Steward) who had played "Four Brothers" in Woody Herman's band during the 1947-49 period, and generally for any of the young white tenor saxophonists of the Lester Young persuasion, i.e., Allen Eager and Brew Moore. The five-tenor date was a one-of-a-kind landmark session (Getz with Sims, Cohn, Eager, and Moore); the Sims and Cohn with Kai Winding date predicted the two-tenor group Zoot and Al would lead from 1957. |
