Bucky & John Pizzarelli - Live at the Vineyard Theatre |
Jazz, Swing, Vocal Jazz |
 |
 |
Artist: Bucky & John PizzarelliAlbum: Live at the Vineyard TheatreLabel: Challenge Release: 1996 Genre: Vocal Jazz Format, bitrate: MP3, 256 kbps Time: 61:27 Size: 77 MB This 1987 concert at New York's Vineyard Theatre pairs two fine guitarists, Bucky Pizzarelli and his equally talented son, John Pizzarelli. The two players fit effortlessly hand in glove, no matter who is soloing at a given time, as they work their way through classic standards ("Three Little Words"), jazz classics ("Do Nothin' Till You Hear From Me"), pop favorites ("Route 66"), and creative medleys (such as the combination of the famous movement from Rodrigo's "Guitar Concerto" with Chick Corea's "Spain"). John Pizzarelli also adds warm vocals to several tracks. Concert and recording producer Richard Sudhalter also contributed the enlightening liner notes, most of which is a transcript of a compilation of interviews done with both musicians at the time of the performance and some eight years later. With the CD cover declaring it to be a limited edition, it is well worth making a high-priority purchase. ~ Ken Dryden, All Music Guide |

1961: Benny Golson / Art Farmer - The Jazztet At Birdhouse |

Artists - Art Farmer & Benny Golson Album - The Jazztet At Birdhouse Label - Argo Year - 1961 Quality - MP3@320 kbps Size - 69,9 mb Total time - 36:16 REPOST with new link The Jazztet were only in existence for a brief time (1959-1962, not counting the later reunions), but with a flurry of recording activity they left a valuable legacy. By the time of they made their fourth album, co-leaders Art Farmer and Benny Golson were the only remaining original members, but the presence of underrated trombonist Tom McIntosh (who is appreciated more for his compositions than his playing ability, since he stopped performing in 1969), Cedar Walton, bassist Thomas Williams, and drummer Albert "Tootie" Heath are a welcome presence. These live performances are from a 1961 engagement at the Birdhouse in Chicago. Golson's "Junction" is an easygoing blues that is marred slightly by what seems to be a rather sloppy edit in the master tape. A hard-blowing up-tempo take of "Farmer's Market," written by Farmer but arranged by Golson, features memorable solos by the leaders, while J.J. Johnson's arrangement of his blues "Shutterbug" clearly inspires the group. McIntosh's "November Afternoon" seems to begin as a ballad, but quickly evolves into a hard bop cooker. Golson's extended treatment of Thelonious Monk's "'Round Midnight" features his emotional tenor sax, while Farmer alternates between his mellow flugelhorn and fiery trumpet. The interaction between the musicians throughout the session adds to the value of this live material, and it is good to finally have it reissued intact, though it won't be available for long since it is part of Verve's limited-edition reissue series. ~ Ken Dryden, All Music Guide |

Artist: Dave Brubeck Album: Les Indispensables De Dave Brubeck (Best of) Label: Sony Release: 2001 Format, bitrate:MP3; 192kb/s Size: 72 Mb While greatest-hits albums from jazz artists are sometimes dubious propositions, Dave Brubeck is the rare exception to the rule. Brubeck concentrated on the song as much as the performance, which is one of the reasons why he appealed to such a wide audience and it's also the reason why Greatest Hits is such an entertaining and effective sampler. |

Steve Kuhn Trio - Looking Back |

Artist: Steve Kuhn Trio Album: Looking Back Label: Concord Jazz Release: 1990 Style: Post-Bop Format mp3, bitrate: 320 kb/s vbr Time: 58:42 Size: 88,4 Mb AMG Rating: Steve Kuhn is in a fun-loving mood on this trio date from 1990, accompanied by bassist David Finck and drummer Lewis Nash. His one original of the session, "Looking Back," is full of humorous moments in a driving post-bop setting, and his lagging a bit behind the beat while giving Dave Brubeck's "The Duke" a bit of an oriental sound at times is almost tongue-in-cheek. But not everything is played with a twinkle in his eye; "Stella by Starlight" is lush and dramatic, as is Michel Colombier's pretty ballad "Emmanuel." Kuhn captures the droll mood of the golden oldie "Gee Baby, Ain't I Good to You" with a campy, almost country-flavored approach. This is an outstanding date by a veteran musician who's always deserving of wider recognition for his efforts. - Ken Dryden at AMG |

Joe Henderson - Ballads and Blues |

 |
Artist: Joe Henderson Album: Ballads and Blues (compilation) Label: Blue Note Year: 1963 - 1985 Release: 1997 Style: Hard Bop Format mp3, bitrate: 320 kb/s vbr Time: 42:10 Size: 67,9 Mb This CD is part of a sampler series put out by Blue Note in 1997. Tenor great Joe Henderson is heard playing five ballads and a pair of blues from two different periods of his career. A pair of the selections are taken from his 1963 Page One set with trumpeter Kenny Dorham and pianist McCoy Tyner, "You Know I Care" is a quartet rendition from 1964, and there are three numbers played with a 1985 pianoless trio also including bassist Ron Carter and drummer Al Foster. But best is a classic (and haunting) rendition of "Lazy Afternoon" taken from a date actually led by drummer Pete LaRoca. Although the music is nice, Joe Henderson had too many highlights in his career (even just from his Blue Note dates) for them all to be included on one set. A decent sampler, but more serious collectors will want the readily available complete CDs instead. - Scott Yanow at AMG |
