2004: Saxophone Summit - Gathering Of Spirits |

Artists - Saxophone Summit Album - Gathering of Spirits Label - Telarc Year - 2004 Quality - mp3@ 192Kp Size - 87 MB Total time-65Min. Michael Brecker, Dave Liebman and Joe Lovano came together in 2004 as "Saxophone Summit" to pay tribute to John Coltrane's late music, made in the last two years of his life (1965 – 1967). The resulting album "Gathering of Spirits" was a critical success which showed that the innovations being pioneered by John Coltrane were accessible and could continue to enrich the language of jazz.
Michael Brecker died in early 2007 but a second album exploring this approach was made possible by the inclusion of Ravi Coltrane. The resulting album, "Seraphic Light", is dedicated to Michael Brecker.
As Dave Liebman has commented: "The original idea was to follow up where "Gathering of Spirits" left off……. The Coltrane compositions we chose for "Seraphic Light" reflect those directions… On the other hand, we wanted everyone in the group to have a compositional voice represented. So in essence we have two albums in one. The original tunes are, to my ears, quite accessible and compact in their performances, offering a needed contrast to the weightier Coltrane material.”
The John Coltrane compositions on the album are: "Expression" (from the 1967 album of the same name), "Seraphic Light" (aka "Creation") (from the 1967 album 'Interstellar Regions") and "Cosmos" (from the 1965 album "Live In Seattle"). The music is wide ranging and inspirational with enough to satisfy those that want to stay "inside" the bop / postbop tradition while taking on the innovations signposted by John Coltrane's most challenging period. ~ 100greatestjazzalbums.blogspot.com |

Artist: McCoy Tyner Album: Song Of The New World Label: Milestone/OJC Release: 1973 Style: Post-Bop Format mp3, bitrate: 320 kb/s Time: 41:24 Size: 94,9 Mb AMG Rating: This set gave pianist McCoy Tyner his first opportunity to write music for a larger group that included brass, flutes, and — on two of the five songs — a string section. The powerful pianist is in fine form and the main soloist throughout (although there are spots for trumpeter Virgil Jones and the flute of Sonny Fortune). Most memorable is the title cut and a reworking of "Afro Blue." - Scott Yanow at AMG |

McCoy Tyner - Atlantis |

Artist: McCoy Tyner Album: Atlantis Label: Milestone Release: 1974 Style: Post-Bop Format mp3, bitrate: 224 kb/s Time: 1:06:20 Size: 106 Mb AMG Rating: This is the single-CD reissue of all of the music from a former two-LP set. Pianist McCoy Tyner's 1974 quintet consisted of the talented youngster Azar Lawrence on tenor and soprano, bassist Joony Booth, drummer Wilby Fletcher and percussionist Guilherme Franco. As is accurately stated in the new liner notes by Neil Tesser, Atlantis was the final recording from Tyner's last band to be based on the music of his former boss, John Coltrane. While Lawrence (who was only 20 at the time) derived his style partly from aspects of Coltrane and the rhythm section is fiery, Tyner creates some very powerful and highly original solos, really tearing into some of the more extended pieces. Recorded live at San Francisco's legendary Keystone Korner, this set has four of Tyner's modal originals played by the full group, a rendition of "My One and Only Love" performed by the leader, Lawrence and Franco as a trio, and a solo piano version of "In a Sentimental Mood." Essential music that still sounds fresh and adventurous. - Scott Yanow at AMG |

Artist: Horace Silver Album: Horace Silver Trio, Vol. 1: Spotlight on Drums Label: Blue Note (RVG Edition) Years: 1952-1953, release: 2003 Style: Hard Bop, Funky Jazz Quality: mp3@320 kbps Time: 52:49 Size: 71,1 mb + 46,75 mb + 20,71 mb (scans) AMG rating Åùå íåò íè "Íî÷è â Á¸ðäëýíäå", íè êàíîíè÷åñêîãî àëüáîìà Õîðàñà Ñèëüâåðà ñ "Ïîñëàíöàìè Äæàçà", íî óæå â ýòîì àëüáîìå âåëèêèé ïèàíèñò âìåñòå ñ âåëèêèì áàðàáàíùèêîì íà÷èíàþò çàêëàäûâàòü ôóíäàìåíò ñòèëÿ, ñòîëü ëþáèìîãî ñîòíÿìè òûñÿ÷ ëþáèòåëåé äæàçà è ôàêòè÷åñêè îïðåäåëèâøåãî äæàçîâûé ìýéíñòðèì íà ñëåäóþùåå äåñÿòèëåòèå - Õàðä-Áîïà. After getting his start with Stan Getz in 1950, Horace Silver began recording his own sides for Blue Note in 1952-1953. Horace Silver Trio represents the best pieces from those two years. Pianist Silver is joined by drummer Art Blakey and bassists Gene Ramey, Curly Russell, and Percy Heath for 16 cuts, including the propulsive "Message From Kenya" and the high-octane "Opus De Funk." As with all good trio work, the strength of the group rests on the intricate interaction of the players, and Silver's trio sounds tight no matter who's playing bass. There are a number of funky originals by the leader, including a bouncy "Buhaina" and the intriguingly structured "Silverware." Blakey, likewise, shines as a writer on "Message From Kenya" and "Nothing But the Soul," two pieces featuring the congas of Sabú Martínez. There are also nice renditions of Duke Ellington's "Prelude to a Kiss" and Mercer/Bloom's "Day in, Day Out." Horace Silver Trio offers a solid portrait of the pianist before the Jazz Messengers, and shows that his style rhythmic, spunky, and filled with clever flourishes was intact before the birth of his famous band. This hard-bopping album serves as a fine introduction to Silver and Blakey. ~ Ronnie Lankford, Jr., All Music Guide |

1957: Abbey Lincoln - That's Him |

Artist: Abbey Lincoln Album: That's Him Label: OJC Release: 1957 Format, bitrate: MP3, 192 kbps Time: 49:49 Size: 69 MB This CD reissue brings back singer Abbey Lincoln's second recording and first for Riverside, adding alternate takes of "I Must Have That Man!" and "Porgy" to the original LP program. Lincoln is accompanied by quite an all-star roster (tenor saxophonist Sonny Rollins, trumpeter Kenny Dorham, pianist Wynton Kelly, bassist Paul Chambers, and drummer Max Roach) and, even this early, she was already a major jazz singer with a style of her own. Lincoln was careful from this point on to only interpret lyrics that she believed in. Her repertoire has a few superior standards (including several songs such as "I Must Have That Man!" and "Don't Explain" that are closely associated with Billie Holiday) plus Oscar Brown, Jr.'s "Strong Man" and Phil Moore's "Tender as a Rose"; she takes the latter unaccompanied. "Don't Explain" is slightly unusual in that Paul Chambers is absent and Wynton Kelly makes an extremely rare appearance on bass. All three of Abbey Lincoln's Riverside albums (each of which have been reissued through the OJC imprint) are well worth several listens. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide |
