A classic album of Tristano-school cool jazz with subtle leanings toward the avant-garde. While this set is not without a number of typical West Coast jazz tendencies (i.e., cool reed tones, a stiff rhythm section, happy-go-lucky heads, etc.), it has an interestingly wide-open and probing vibe. This band was simply bursting with ideas. On "Ear Conditioning," for example, the tenor tandem of Marsh and Ted Brown weaves in and out of the head with the proficiency and grace displayed -- admittedly, to greater effect -- on Lennie Tristano's "Wow," a tune also featuring Marsh, only with Lee Konitz on alto instead of Brown on tenor. Like "Ear conditioning," "Smog Eyes" and the title track both employ long and busy heads. In a manner typical of compositions by Tristano's associates, many of these themes are very complicated and take several measures to achieve resolution. That having been said, comparisons to the Tristano Capitol sessions are simply inevitable, as they laid the foundation for everything heard here. To judge the quality of one versus the other, though, is trivial. Jazz Of Two Cities has many treasures all of its own. Thankfully, both historic sessions have been reissued together on the Capitol Jazz CD Intuition. Included in the collection are both the stereo and mono takes of four different pieces from the Marsh date. This is because Jazz Of Two Cities was issued once in mono and later in stereo with the new title The Winds Of Marsh. The two versions of the record feature altogether different takes of two numbers ("Jazz of Two Cities," "I Never Knew") and different solos on the other two ("Ear Conditioning," "Lover Man"). In other words, fidelity is not the only difference between Jazz Of Two Cities and The Winds Of Marsh; though in and of itself, that's probably not reason enough to spend an arm and a leg on both copies, since they're quite rare and all versions are included on the CD. This is some very fine music by a band with an exceptionally rich collective imagination. It is clear that, in the hands of this combo, every theme is treated like a question with an absolutely limitless amount of harmonic and melodic answers. ~ Brandon Burke, All Music Guide

This release presents two rare performances by Bili Evans in Northern Europe. The initial three tuner, appearing here on CD for the first time ever, were recorded during an informai visit to the house of Finnish composer Ilkka Kuusisto in Helsinki, Finland. The rest of the tracks present a hard to find concert in Lund, Sweden, previously available only on a limited Japanese edition. The first half is by the Bili Evans Trio, while the second features the great Swedish singer Monica Zetterlund (with whom Evans had recorded a studio album a decade before) joining them for a lovely vocal set.

Texas R&B singer Peppermint Harris is best known for two early-'50s hits, the classic "Rainin' in My Heart" and "I Get Loaded," a drunken boast that led to a slew of other drinking songs from Harris, typecasting him as the man with a bottle in his hand, a mixed blessing at best. With an easy baritone that came across as a sort of late-night version of Sam Cooke on too many whiskey shots, Harris arguably did his best work with Jewel Records, a Louisiana label owned and run by Stan "The Record Man" Lewis. While he didn't have any huge hits between 1965 and 1971, the length of his stay at Jewel, Harris nonetheless produced some solid material, as this anthology shows. He reprises his self-penned "Rainin' in My Heart" twice here, and turns in a fine version of Big Bill Broonzy's "Key to the Highway," as well, and working with a large band, he shows a real talent for songwriting, vocal phrasing, and arrangement. There aren't a lot of Peppermint Harris CDs on the market, and while the 1950s Aladdin sides are more famous, this one, given its consistent tone and excellent sound, makes for probably a better introduction to Harris' unique version of Texas R&B. ~ Steve Leggett, All Music Guide

The band was formed by teenage youngsters from Kecskemet in 1995. Since 1996 they have regularly taken part at the annually organised Bohem Ragtime & Jazz Festival. The members of the band are amateur musicians, who play together just for fun and pleasure. In spite of their age they declare that the main profile of their music is jazz style of the 20's and 30's. Their uniqueness is that they apply two reeds and the tuba in the rythm section occasionally undertakes the role of the double bass. In 2000 they received a special award at the first Hungarian Youth Jazz Competition, and in June 2001 and 2002 they participated at the International Louis Armstrong Commemmorative Competition in Sainte-Adresse, France where they won second prize, leaving behind several European "adult" bands. Finally in 2003 at the same competition they won the 1st prize and Attila Korb, the leader of the band won the composer's 1st prize with his piece named "Snow". On the international Jazz Competition in Saint Raphael in 2004 they won the 1st prize of the town. The band has published two cds so far "Too Busy" in 2001 and Shoe "Shine Boy" in 2003.

Here's very rare album from Audiofidelity (made in Japan), now with 6 Max Roach / Clifford Brown recordings for Mainstream made in 1953/1954. As far as I can figure out this line of tracks was only available on Mainstream vinyl. I think it's a must have for any jazz collector.

Herb Alpert and Lani Hall. These two names have been as my favorite artists for such a long time. Both of them have a very long career as jazz artists, more than 4 decades, with many outstanding achievements and stories behind it. When Sergio Mendes‘ 2008 album ”Encanto” was released, I was delighted to see these perfect couple appeared again as a guest star in one song, ”Dreamer”. It was a very sweet reunion between them, and now I’m more delighted to see that a very special and intimate album of Herb Alpert and Lani Hall entitled ”Anything Goes”, has been released through Concord Records.

winked EVERY DAY IS A B.B. DAY ! winked

This is a 1983 recording of the B.B. King band playing live in Cannes, France. The King show, which has not changed all that much in recent decades, is comprised of hits such as "The Thrill Is Gone" (a decent live version, not turgid like some of the ones form the '90s), "Payin the Cost to Be the Boss," a thirteen-minute band workout called "Jam," a swinging hot reading of Memphis Slim's "Everyday I Have the Blues," and a deeper than blue read of "All over Again," by Carl Adams and King. The sound is very good to excellent, and fans of the live B.B. material will count this among the better latter-day sets he's issued. ~ Thom Jurek

Although it was recorded in Rio De Janeiro in the mid-'60s, it's likely this Sylvia Telles album was geared toward the international market, as she sings almost entirely in English on this collection. Too, although she recorded many Antonio Carlos Jobim songs in her career (and in fact recorded an entire album of Jobim material, Sylvia Telles Sings the Wonderful Songs of Antonio Carlos Jobim, around the same time), there's only one Jobim tune here, "Pardon My English" (co-written with Aloysio De Oliveira). Telles does indeed sing well in English on this record, with an only faintly detectable accent and confident phrasing. While a few of the songs are covers of American popular standards (Richard Rodgers & Oscar Hammerstein II's "It Might as Well Be Spring," George Gershwin & Ira Gershwin's "If Not for Me," and "Baubles, Bangles and Beads"), in the main she stuck to English translations of Brazilian songs, though "Balanco Zona Sul" is sung in the original Portuguese. Marcos Valle co-wrote three of the numbers with Paulo Sergio, and these especially "The Face I Love" and "Surfin' in Rio" are highlights, with a somewhat sassier, more uninhibited feel than much of the rest of the record. It's classy period mid-'60s bossa nova with polished arrangements, if a little on the poppy side, showing Telles remaining in top form not long before her premature death in a car accident.

To my friends in JBC! Please enjoy.

Hawkins led one of his finest bands in 1945, a sextet with the fiery trumpeter Howard McGhee that fell somewhere between small-group swing and bebop. This CD contains all of that group's 12 recordings, including memorable versions of "Rifftide" and "Stuffy"; trombonist Vic Dickenson guests on four tracks. This CD concludes with one of Hawkins' rarest sessions, an Aladdin date from 1947 that finds the veteran tenor leading a septet that includes 20-year-old trumpeter Miles Davis. ~ by Scott Yanow, AMG.

Ice Pickin' is the album that brought Albert Collins directly back into the limelight, and for good reason, too. The record captures the wild, unrestrained side of his playing that had never quite been documented before. Though his singing doesn't quite have the fire or power of his playing, the album doesn't suffer at all because of that — he simply burns throughout the album. Ice Pickin' was his first release for Alligator Records and it set the pace for all the albums that followed. No matter how much he tried, Collins never completely regained the pure energy that made Ice Pickin' such a revelation. - Thom Owens at All Music Guide
