Nabatov is technically one of the piano sensations of the last two decades. An artist whose skills seem to know no boundaries. From stride to free jazz, he has everything that jazz piano's history has to offer at his fingertips, while pulling baroque, classical and romantic music out of his sleeve with ease, as this recording reveals. But more than that, Nabatov uses this recording to make an intimate musical statement, by celebrating his love for Brazilian music.

1982: Emily Remler Quartet - Take Two     Artist: Emily Remler Quartet

     Year: 1982
     Format, bitrate: FLAC
     Time: 43:28
     Size: 275 MB (2 files)

Emily Remler's second recording as a leader finds the 24-year-old guitarist still very much playing in the Wes Montgomery vein, although showing her own musical personality here and there. She is joined by pianist James Williams, bassist Don Thompson, and drummer Terry Clarke on a challenging set of material filled with obscurities. Certainly such numbers as Cannonball Adderley's "Cannonball," Dexter Gordon's "For Regulars Only," McCoy Tyner's "Search for Peace," and Monty Alexander's "Eleuthra" are rarely performed. Better known are "In Your Own Sweet Way" and "Afro Blue"; Remler also contributes two originals. Throughout the date the guitarist displays a great deal of potential, much of which would sadly go unrealized due to her early death. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide

Stu's usually just an ok trumpet player in our book but these are some of his best sessions, thanks to the presence of a young Charlie Mariano, who really sparkles on both sessions! Charlie's alto sax seems to give Williamson's trumpet an edge that we usually don't hear on his sides from the time cutting the whole groove with a bit more soul than might be expected for a Bethlehem session. Stu Williamson plays is an expanded version of the 10" album Sapphire and features Stu and Charlie alongside a group that includes Claude Williamson on piano, Max Bennett on bass and Stan Levey on drums. The LP features 8 tracks in all and titles include "Slugger", "There'll Never Be Another You", "Autumn In New York", "Sunday", "Sapphire", "The Things We Did Last Summer", "Don't Get Around Much Anymore", "Red Cross", "Big Red", "Hongry Child", "Pee Jay", "Just Friends", and "Strike Up The Band".

Four great blues harmonica players (James Cotton, Billy Branch, Charlie Musselwhite, and Sugar Ray Norcia) are featured in various combinations on this spirited disc, backed by a four-piece rhythm section (with guitarist Kid Bangham and pianist Anthony Geraci). Cotton and Norcia have solo pieces, seven numbers feature two harmonicas, and the lengthy low-down blues "Harp to Harp" has all four of the harmonica players taking turns soloing. Much of the material is jazz-oriented, including "The Hucklebuck," "TD's Boogie Woogie," and "Route 66," and the majority of the selections are instrumentals. Each of the harmonica players sounds inspired and the results are consistently exciting and swinging. - Scott Yanow at All Music Guide

Lorraine Feather (daughter of critic Leonard Feather) has made her mark as a lyricist and singer, with her former group, Full Swing, and also in non-jazz settings. New York City Drag is certainly a major change of pace, for she is featured singing a set of Fats Waller songs. Not heard are the usual Waller standards such as "Honeysuckle Rose" and "Ain't Misbehavin'" because this set is something much different. Feather wrote lyrics to a dozen of Waller's piano pieces, including "Blue Black Bottom," "Numb Fumblin'," "Valentine Stomp," "African Ripples," and other tunes that had never been sung before. She created stories to each of the songs, changing the titles and turning them into fascinating narratives. Fortunately, her appealing voice is strong enough to essay the tricky intervals, and one can always understand what she is singing. Particularly delightful are her words to "The Minor Drag" ("You're Outta Here"), "Gladyse" ("She's Gettin' Some"), "Clothes Line Ballet" ("New York City Drag"), and "Fractious Fingering" ("Jukebox"). Accompanied by either Dick Hyman or Mike Lang on piano, along with occasional quiet rhythm guitar from John Pisano, plus sometimes bass and drums, Lorraine Feather is heard on the most significant album of her career. And on "Cezanne," she is joined by Fats Waller himself via his recording of "Smashing Thirds." Waller would have thoroughly enjoyed this inspired and highly original set.

This fine trio set by pianist Mary Lou Williams (with bassist Larry Gales and drummer Eddie Marshall) was not released for the first time until 25 years after its recording. Williams' career lasted from the 1920s until her death in 1981. She starts off this live performance by saying that she is going to do a history of jazz, and she does cover several vintage styles in a medley (spirituals, blues, stride, boogie-woogie, and swing), but does not get past 1940. However, some of the individual songs explored at greater length are boppish and hint at later developments, even though there is nothing here that's all that avant-garde. The fact that 50 years after she first recorded Mary Lou Williams still sounded fairly modern was remarkable and she is in excellent form throughout this valuable recording.

Rugolo's TV work ranks up with the best of his era. Among the series he scored for were "The Thin Man," "Richard Diamond," "The Stranger," "The Fugitive," "Run for Your Life," "Lie Detector," "Felony Squad," and "Family." He won an Emmy for his scoring work on the rotating doctor-lawyer-adventurer series, "The Bold Ones." He also wrote scores for the films "Glory Alley," "The Strip," "Easy to Love," Jack the Ripper," "The Sweet Ride," and "Everything I Have is Yours."

By the early 1960s, studio work consumed all of Rugolo's energies, and he stopped recording except for soundtrack albums. He recently came out of semi-retirement to compose and conduct the score for "This World, Then the Fireworks," and otherwise-unsuccessful adaptation of a Jim Thompson novel.

Some 13 years into his recording career, jazz pianist extraordinaire Bill Charlap's first live album is, perhaps, his most exquisite release to date. While virtually all of his studio albums more than adequately showcase Charlap's virtuosity, good taste, and ceaseless imagination at the keys, it took the spontaneity of the live performance — at New York's fabled Village Vanguard — to give the first true indication of just what Charlap is capable of creating on the fly. The pinpoint accuracy and sophistication of his solos, whether at breakneck speed or in a ballad setting, are a marvel. Charlap's concentration never strays, and although he feels no compunction to strut, he lets it be known with each passage that he's among the most gifted pianists in jazz today. There is an economy to his playing even when the notes are rippling out faster than most listeners can probably hear them, and his sense of romanticism never flags. Those hot displays, particularly the seven-and-a-half-minute "My Shining Hour" (one of three Harold Arlen songs performed), "The Lady Is a Tramp," and "Rocker" (a horn-less take on the Gerry Mulligan-penned classic made famous by Miles Davis), serve as perfect showcases not only for Charlap's fleet-fingered acrobatics but for the rhythm section, bassist Peter Washington and drummer Kenny Washington, to let loose. The drummer is as impressive skimming brushes across his traps as when wailing on them with a pair of sticks, and the bass player never loses sight of the root of the song as he wanders forcefully but melodically and thoughtfully. Where Charlap shines most brightly, though, is on the ballads. "It's Only a Paper Moon," "Autumn in New York," and Jim Hall's "All Across the City" give voice to Charlap's most vivid pianistics — his range within a standard is admirable and something to be emulated, as is the discipline that keeps him from shooting off into the cosmos — and serve as a constant reminder that grace, inspiration, and skill are not mutually exclusive traits. This CD was nominated in 2007 for a Grammy award as Best Jazz Instrumental Album (Individual or Group).- Jeff Tamarkin at All Music Guide

Gabor Szabo is our guest tonight on The New World Of Jazz, a man who lived through the nightmare of 1956 in Hungary when the Russian forces stamped out the Hungarian revolt. It was a very restrictive time when musicians were afraid to play American music, especially jazz. But he made it out of that, playing light classical and gypsy music in public, even though jazz was his passion, and listening to Radio Free Europe and the broadcasts of Stan Kenton and Miles Davis and made his way to America, where he enrolled in the Berklee School of Music to start formal training.
