Artist: Django Reinhardt Album: Django With His American Friends 3ÑD Label - DRG Records Years: 1935-1945, release: 1998 Quality: MP3@320 kbps Size: 82,2+78,9+83 mb (sharebee) Total time: 56:34+54:20+57:03 AMG Rating: Dedicated to the centenary of the birth of an outstanding musician! The brilliant gypsy swing guitarist Django Reinhardt is most famous for his work with the Quintet of the Hot Club of France, an all-string group also including violinist Stephane Grappelli, two rhythm guitarists, and a bassist. However, through the years he also had opportunities to record with American stars. In some cases, they were added to a Quintet date, and in others, he was part of an all-star group. This three-CD set, released in 1998, has 57 performances; all but the final four numbers are from 1935-1940, with quite a few cut in 1937. The value of this wonderful set to collectors depends on how much Django Reinhardt they already have in their collections, as every performance has been reissued in the past. For those listeners who do not own many of these sessions, the selections are essential, since Reinhardt and his guests are consistently inspired by each other's presence. Among the American stars who are featured along with Reinhardt (and frequently Grappelli) are Coleman Hawkins, Frank "Big Boy" Goudie, Bill Coleman, Freddy Taylor, Benny Carter, Dicky Wells, Eddie South, Larry Adler, Rex Stewart, Barney Bigard, and Arthur Briggs. The selections are fortunately in chronological order, and each of the 17 recording sessions is reissued in complete form. An extremely well done reissue. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide |

(Repost) Ìîåìó äðóãó, óâàæàåìîìó lex, áîëüøîìó ïîêëîííèêó Jazz-a! The Gitanes label has taken it upon itself to reissue on CD some of the late work of gypsy jazz giant Django Reinhardt. The tracks that make up Nuits de Saint-Germain des-Prés come from three Decca sessions dating from May of 1951 to January 1953, the final year of his life. The title comes from the reopening of the infamous club Saint-Germain des-Prés, whose reopening coincided with Reinhardt showing off his bop chops to a host of notable American jazzmen, including Benny Carter, Roy Eldridge, Charlie Parker, Don Byas, and others. The bands on all of these sessions are comprised of Young Turks, most notably a youthful Pierre Michelot on bass. The other constants are drummer Pierre Lemarchand and Hubert Fol on clarinets and saxophone; the latter's brother Raymond is the pianist on two of these sessions. Reinhardt's evolution to include bebop phrasing and tempos was a gradual one and, unlike many players of the era, he never lost identity because he incorporated the advanced harmonics and chromatic aspects of the music -- he already possessed the necessary technique, and an electric guitar with its infinitely faster action only helped. The first session here, from May 1951, features three Reinhardt originals, including his old nugget "Impromptu," revved up and retooled for blast-off. It's blindingly quick and, if it weren't for Michelot's constant bass on the pulse, the tune would literally take off. . . . |

Artist: Michael Wollny Album: Hexentanz (ACT Piano Works VII) Label: ACT (ACT 9756-2) Year: 2006; release: 2007 Genre: Modern jazz, Classical (solo piano) Format, bitrate: FLAC Time: 51:17 Size: 178 MB (2 files) It isn’t often that one finds Schubert and Björk on the same album, but Michael Wollny is nothing if not eclectic and omnivorous in his music. Still under 30, Wollney is a gifted pianist who has worked with many of the leading German jazz musicians, including both Emil and Albert Mangelsdorff and has made two outstanding duo records with the veteran tenor player Heinz Sauer – Certain Beauty (ACT 9444-2) and Melancholia (ACT 9433-2). He is also a member of the much-praised trio [em] along with Eva Kruse (bass) and Eric Schaefer (drums). On this album – his first solo CD, I think – he has chosen to devise a themed collection, almost a huge suite. All the pieces here are linked by the theme of the Gothic. Planning for the project, Roland Spiegel’s booklet notes tell us that "Wollney retreated for a month to the island of Gotland. He listened to Schubert, Steve Reich, Björk and music by Joachim Kuhn (much revered by Wollny), read Edgar Allan Poe and studied films by Werner Herzog, David Lynch and not least Ken Russell’s 1986 work ‘Gothic’: a film that fascinated Wollny as a ‘grotesque brainstorm on the subject’"... |

His wailing harmonica playing and soulful vocals are a perfect match for his streetwise songwriting. The combination of Delta-influenced blues with a more urban sophistication not only defines Arnold's sound, but was also a significant contribution in the early, formative days of rock and roll. - Amazon.com |

Artist : Hampton Hawes Album : All Night Session (volume 1-3) 2CD Label : Definitive Records. Year : 1991 Format : MP3 Bitrate : 320 bps Size: 99+99+87 MB (incl. covers/inlay) Originally issued on three LPs, the music resulting from Hampton Hawes' All Night Session! was stereophonically recorded for the Contemporary label in Los Angeles on the night of November 12 and into the morning of November 13, 1956. This session transcended the conventions of studio production by moving steadily from one tune to the next like a live gig with no alternate takes. Here is West Coast bop at its most spontaneous and exciting. Prior to this highly successful quartet experiment, Hawes had recorded mainly with his trio. He said that the addition of guitarist Jim Hall opened up more rhythmic possibilities. The currents passing between Hawes and bassist Red Mitchell were the metabolic pulse of this group; drummer Eldridge "Bruz" Freeman was a replacement for Chuck Thompson, whose heroin habit had forced him out of the band earlier that year. On this night Hawes chose to reinterpret no less than four Dizzy Gillespie compositions, along with themes by Duke Ellington and Duke Jordan as well as six chestnuts from the standard jazz repertoire. But there's nothing "standardized" about this music. Like his main influence, Charlie Parker, Hampton Hawes was a strikingly inventive blues-based improviser; this element is strongly present throughout, particularly during five spontaneously composed Hawes originals that materialized during this monumentally creative All Night Session! Now, 50 years after this music was first made available to the public, the Definitive label's beautifully remastered edition should enable this to be acknowledged and appreciated as one of the truly essential jazz recordings of all time. ~ arwulf arwulf, All Music Guide2007 two CD collection features all three volumes on two discs! Recorded in just one night, from the late hours of November 12 to the early hours of November 13, 1956, this session is more like a live date than a trip to the studio, with no repeated numbers and, consequently, no alternate takes. While Hawes' was most often heard in a trio format, this release showcases the pianist in a quartet featuring the guitar magic of Jim Hall. 17 tracks.~ Definitive Records. |

Promo says: "was recorded Down Under with an all-Australian backing band, and is a journey through Gwyn’s musical roots: all tracks have been recorded with acoustic instruments, which breaks from Gwyn’s usual brand of hard-hitting, bluesy rock. Most songs were played on his 1936 National Steel guitar (hence the title!) with just the right measure of double bass, Hammond organ, piano, harmonica and drums (with brushes, natch!). As usual, Gwyn wrote most of the songs." |

With the dynamic, swirling sounds of his Hammond B-3 organ, Wild Bill Davis provided a bridge from the big band swing of the 1930s and '40s to the organ-driven R&B of the 1950s and early '60s. Together with guitarist Floyd Smith and drummer Chris Columbus, Davis set the framework for the jazz organ combo sound.
Initially a guitarist, Davis made his debut with Milt Larkin's band in 1939. The group is remembered for the double-saxophone attack of Eddie "Cleanhead" Vinson and Arnett Cobb. Davis, who was inspired by the guitar playing of Freddie Green, remained with the band until 1942. Moving to the piano, Davis joined Louis Jordan & His Tympany 5 in 1945. By then, he had already attracted attention as a skilled writer and arranger. He later furnished original material and arrangements for both Duke Ellington and Count Basie. He was scheduled to record his arrangement of "April in Paris" with the Count Basie Orchestra in 1955, but was unable to make it to the recording sessions. Recorded without his participation, the tune went on to be a Top 30 pop hit. Intrigued by the organ playing of Fats Waller and Count Basie, Davis began to experiment with the Hammond B-3. He soon developed his unique approach. "I thought of (the organ) as a replacement in clubs for a big band," he said during a late-'80s interview. Although he left Jordan's band after five years to form his own trio, Davis periodically returned to play special engagements. Although eclipsed by succeeding jazz organists, including Jimmy Smith and Bill Doggett in the late '50s, and Booker T. Jones in the '60s, Davis remained active until his death from a heart attack in August 1995. His summer appearances in Atlantic City, New Jersey were an annual treat for almost three decades.
A native of Moorestown, New Jersey, Davis studied music at Tuskegee University and Wiley College in Texas. ~ Craig Harris, All Music Guide

Although the Hammond organ was well documented in recordings since the late 30's, it was thought of as a novelty instrument until Wild Bill Davis emerged. The father of the modern organ combo, together with guitarist Floyd Smith, and drummer Chris Columbus. Found its place on the charts introducing the wide audience to a warm storm of irresistible swing by sound like a little big band. Artists: Harry James and his Orchestra Featuring Frank Sinatra Album: The Complete Recordings Nineteen Thirty-Nine Label: Columbia/Legacy Year: 1939, release: 1995 Quality: MP3@320 kbps Size: 102 mb (sharebee) Total time: 63:48 AMG Rating: Frank Sinatra made his first studio recordings on July 13, 1939 with a band led by the man who gave him his first real break in show business -- trumpeter Harry James. Columbia/Legacy's 1995 release of the complete 1939 recordings of the Harry James Orchestra featuring Sinatra includes four alternate takes and seven live performances, recorded during the summer of 1939 at the Roseland and Marine Ballrooms in New York and Atlantic City (tracks 15-21). Tracks 15-18 predate Sinatra's studio recording debut by several days. There's something pleasant about hearing this vocalist putting songs across just before he became ultra-famous by ditching James to pursue more lucrative exploits as Tommy Dorsey's star attraction. The Sinatra of 1939 was a 23-year-old wonder whose marvelous voice was not yet saturated with the singer's notorious latter-day swagger. He's clearly happy to be showing the public who he is and what he can do. The combination of Sinatra's fresh young energy and the excellent instrumental accompaniment makes this entry in the Harry James discography a wise choice for those interested in the singer, the trumpeter, or both. ~ arwulf arwulf, All Music Guide |

2009: Johnny Varro Featuring Ken Peplowski:Two Legends Of Jazz |

Artists: Johnny Varro Featuring Ken Peplowski Album: Two Legends Of Jazz Label:Arbors ARCD 19363 Year: ; 2008 Format, bitrate: MP@ 320 Kb/s Time:72:00 Size: 165MB Who said that classic jazz dead? While there are some excellent musicians, he will live! Veteran pianist Johnny Varro and clarinetist Ken Peplowski are certainly two veterans of vintage early-period jazz, and join together in complete agreement as to how it should be correctly played on this set of swinging music that showcases an unconventional twist. This is not strictly a quartet date, also featuring legends in their own right like bassist Frank Tate and drummer Joe Ascione. One and/or the other rhythm mate drops out on several selections, providing an always interesting component of pacing, from duet and trio to the full quartet. Peplowski in particular is as brilliant a clarinetist as there is in modern times, his unwavering tone and wealth of ideas shining through on every delicious track. Of course, the group collectively plays famous standard American popular songs the whole world knows and recognizes. It's not an energetic set, more laid-back and cool, but there's no reservation in playing this music faithfully, with the jazz tradition firmly in mind. The CD starts with two excellent trio tracks minus bass. "My Baby Just Cares for Me" was popularized by Nina Simone, and here is where Peplowski displays his total command of this uncomplicated melody, Varro dipping into stride on his solo, while "The Touch of Your Lips" seems almost too easy in the hands of these swing masters. Tate joins in for an unusual choice, Luiz Bonfá's quintessential but lesser known bossa nova "Menina Flor," while an interesting treatment of the quickened "Out of Nowhere" is the most energized and animated tune of the date, keeping the players and listeners on their toes. "Bluesette" is a tricky one, but the band interprets this most lyrical tune very well; Tate's strummed bass buoys the hardest swinger, "Secret Love"; the group dives headfirst into the wonderful Cole Porter hot jazz classic "I Love You" with full fervor; and improvisation is key during "Blues on 57th Street," a tune -- made up on the spot -- named after the street where the studio is located in New York City. A low-key piano/clarinet duo on "It's Easy to Remember" and Varro's solo version of "You're a Sweetheart" displays his love of stride piano, and the influence of his main man, Teddy Wilson. Varro stated that this session was "fun, comfortable, satisfying" and you'll wholeheartedly agree that it is from start to finish, a solid effort from four masters of classic mainstream jazz. ~ Michael G. 1969: Eric Clapton - Goodbye Cream |

Artist: Eric Clapton Album: Goodbye Cream Year Of Release: January 1969 Label: Polydor / Umgd Genre: Blues Quality: MP3@ 320 kbps Total Size: 85.06 mb This fourth and final album to be issued--in January 1969--during Cream's two-and-a-half year career is probably their most consistent, and among their best. At six songs in just over thirty minutes, it's short, and for anyone awaiting a major final statement in 1969 it must have been a bringdown. But looking at the group's work 35 years later, it is by far their tightest album, with nary a weak cut. "Fresh Cream" (December 1966 - the US version issued early in 1967 is superior)was Cream heavying up the blues. Some of Clapton's most blistering guitar can be found on this mix of originals (by Jack Bruce and Ginger Baker) and blues covers. The best version on CD is DCC's gold disc, combining the UK only track ("Spoonful") with the US only track (the classic "I Feel Free") and adding both sides of Cream's debut single ("Coffee Song"/"Wrapping Paper"), all nicely annotated. "Disreali Gears" lacks the sonic impact of the debut, but shows Cream's progress away from blues derivations to a more integrated sound: fine pop hooks adorn blues/psych originals. Clapton is more subdued as a guitarist, but makes his presence felt as both vocalist and (for the first time) songwriter, and there are more varied tonal colors and moods, from the proto-Zep mythology of "Brave Ulysses" to the haunting, downcast "We're Going Wrong." Much of the progress is due to new producer/multi-instumentalist (and virtual fourth member) Felix Pappalardi, who had produced Fred Neil and the Youngbloods, and would go on to found Mountain in 1969.

Forty-nine years after his recording debut, trombonist J.J. Johnson is still in peak form on this disc. Most of the numbers on his Verve CD find him accompanied by either Stanley Cowell or Renee Roenes on piano, bassist Rutus Reid and Victor Lewis or Lewis Nash on drums with occasional contributions from trumpeter Terence Blanchard (whose chops sound a little off) and Ralph Moore on tenor and soprano. In addition, tenor saxophonist Jimmy Heath makes a couple of guest appearances, and "Beautiful Love" is taken by Johnson as an unaccompanied solo. Despite the strong supporting cast, the great trombonist is the star throughout, particularly on "It Never Entered My Mind," his "Kenya," "It's You or No One" and a tasteful quartet rendition of "I Got It Bad." Excellent music.~ by Scott Yanow, AMG.
