 |
Artist: James Brown Album: The Singles vol 8 1972-1973 [2CD] Label: Hip-O Years: 1972-1973, release:2010 ENCODER: Lame 3.97 -V2 Quality: VBR kbps Size: 174,8 MB + 144:05 min The early 70s were an amazing time in soul music and for the King Of Soul in particular documented masterfully on Volume 8 in the James Brown Singles series from Hip-O Select! Like the other volumes, it includes both sides of all the JB singles, programmed chronologically from early 1972 through August 1973 from furious and frenetic funk to socially conscious soul, blacksploitation soundtrack gems to tender ballads and a few that combine those elements. Includes unstoppable classics and comparable rarities, with detailed notes on each single, the line-up of players and the dates of release. Straight up fantastic funky soul, and not just for completists it's a stellar portrait of JB that shows just how far he reached stylistically without ever compromising his established identity as The King Of Soul! 40 tracks on 2CDs: "Nothing Beats A Try But A Fail", "Hot Pants Road", "King Heroin", "Pass The Peas", "There It Is" (Parts 1 & 2), "Honky Tonk" (Parts 1 & 2), "Get On The Good Foot" (Parts 1 & 2), "I Got Ants In My Pants" (mono and reverb versions), "What My Baby Needs Now Is A Little More Lovin" and "This Guy -- This Girl's In Love With You" with Lyn Collins, "Mama's Dead", "Everybody's Got Soul", "Sexy Sexy Sexy", "Slaughter Theme" and much more! Artist: Billy Bauer Album: Plectrist Label: Norgran MGN 1082 Year: 1956 Format, bitrate: mp3@320 kbs (LP-rip) Time: ~ 40 min Size: 88,56 MB (with Covers Front/Back HD) Billy Bauer was an accomplished studio guitar player whose only studio date as a leader was this release, finally reissued as a part of the Verve Elite Edition limited edition CD series in 2000. Throughout the CD he is never overpowering, but a solid rhythmic player, whether essaying a gently swinging "Too Marvelous for Words" or a more sprightly "You'd Be So Nice to Come Home To." Bauer also wrote several originals for the date, including the easygoing bop vehicle "Lincoln Tunnel," the tender ballad "Night Cruise," and the unaccompanied "Blue Mist." Accompanying Bauer is bassist Milt Hinton, drummer Osie Johnson, and the obscure pianist Arnold Ackers. While this won't be an essential CD for every jazz fan, those who acquire it will not be disappointed. ~ Ken Dryden, All Music Guide |

2002: James Cotton - 35th Anniversary Jam of the James Cotton Blues Band |

Artist: James Cotton Album: 35th Anniversary Jam of the James Cotton Blues Band Label:Telarc Distribution Year:rec.Jun 2001 / rel.May 28, 2002 Format:MP3 @ 320 Kb/s Time: 53:33 Size: 117, 6 Mb To my friends in JBC! Please enjoy.
Don't complain that there are too many guests here -- that's what this jam was all about, inviting a bunch of friends and kindred spirits to jam in the studio during June of 2001. These musicians were here to salute not just the great James Cotton and his songs, but the long life of his classic James Cotton Blues Band, by playing some of their greatest songs and having a good time. And that's what this is -- a good jam session, performed with heart and vigor. Some of the guests might be a bit better than others, but the band is lively, there's more grit than you'd expect for an all-digital production, and Cotton has moments where he simply smokes. He's constantly a joy to hear; listen to how he breaks into "Jingle Bells" during "The Creeper" and try not to smile. Sure, this isn't the first James Cotton album you should get, or even the fifth, but if you've been a longtime fan, you'll have fun with this.~ by Stephen Thomas Erlewine, AMG.

2008: Watermelon Slim And The Workers - No Paid Holidays |

Artist: Watermelon Slim And the Workers Album: No Paid Holidays Label: NorthernBlues Music Year: rec.Nov 2007 / rel.Jun 24, 2008 Format: MP3 @ 320 Kb/s Time: 52:21 Size: 115,6 Mb AMG rating: To my friends in JBC! Please enjoy.
Watermelon Slim has a fresh contemporary vision of country blues, a personal one that still allows listeners to feel right at home, and while he hasn't varied his approach too much over the course of his past couple of albums (No Paid Holidays is his third release for Northern Blues), what he does fits and works so well that that's undoubtedly a good thing. Here he hits his usual touchstones, pounding out a couple of full-tilt blues-rockers, shining on slide guitar, stripping things down on occasion for one of his unique "hollers." There aren't really any surprises, but again, that's fine. Well, actually, hearing Slim's stripped-down harmonica version of Laura Nyro's "And When I Die" is a bit of a surprise, and a delight at that. Also a delight is the slide guitar bonanza of "Bubba's Blues," which features guest slide guitarist Lee Roy Parnell and Slim tearing the rafters down. Slim's sharp narrative sense emerges on "Max the Baseball Clown," which conjures long-ago boyhood summers while the opener, "Blues for Howard," contains the remarkable line "You can't stay neutral on a moving train." The blues is such a conservative genre in so many ways, depending on familiar progressions and purposely clichéd sentiment to convey universal emotions. Watermelon Slim manages to work within that framework and still somehow make it all seem hushed and personal, even intimate. It's not an easy line to walk, but he does it as well as anyone currently on the contemporary blues scene. No Paid Holidays may not cut into any new territory, but it doesn't really have to because what this guy does is wonderfully solid right where it is.~ by Steve Leggett, AMG.

2009: Bluesology: The Modern Jazz Quartet Anthology |

Artist: The Modern Jazz Quartet Album: Bluesology: The Modern Jazz Quartet Anthology (The Atlantic Years 1956 - 1988) 2cd Label: Warner Uk/Zoom Genre: Jazz Format mp3, bitrate: 256 kb/s vbr Time: 2:17:10 Size: 181 Mb This compilation gives a timely reminder of the established jazz values. The Modern Jazz Quartet had a long, distinguished career because generations of listeners found their music cool and easy on the ear. Their combination of piano, vibraphone, bass and drums gave the MJQ an instantly recognisable sparse sound that was hugely influential. The absence of brass or saxophones concentrated attention on John Lewis's piano and Milt Jackson's vibes. The two complemented each other beautifully, indulging in call-and-response and creating interweaving melody lines. All four players had their roots in bebop, having played with such legends as Dizzy Gillespie, Charlie Parker and Miles Davis, giving the quartet an innate sense of swing. As well as cool jazz, MJQ were also influential in the combination of jazz and classical music known as Third Stream. This produced striking combinations of material. Included here are jazz versions of the sprightly Bachianas Brasileiras by Brazilian composer Villa-Lobos, the carol God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen, and the Bach cantata Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring, alongside jazz staples such as Thelonious Monk's 'Round Midnight and Ornette Coleman's Lonely Woman. However, most compositions here are MJQ originals, including Jackson's Bag's Groove and Lewis' Django, both of which became popular jazz standards in their own right. In typical MJQ fashion, both pieces display a smooth surface beneath which lie greater complexities, so they sound better the more one listens to them. In an extensive discography, many of the quartet's best releases were live recordings. This anthology wisely includes one disc of studio-recorded tracks and a second focussing on concert recordings. Live, the quartet sounded slightly rougher than in the studio, stretching out and exploring pieces more. This release is an excellent overview of the MJQ's career, including most of their finest moments. It makes a good starting point for beginners. Established fans will be attracted by its inclusion of three unreleased tracks recorded in 1971 as part of the sessions that produced the Plastic Dreams album. - bbc.co.uk |

Artist: The Modern Jazz Quartet Album: Third Stream Music Years: 1957-1960, release: 2002 Label: Wounded Bird Records Format, bitrate: MP3@320 kb/s Time: 36:09 Size: 88,46 MB (+5% recovery) (sharebee) AMG Rating This Atlantic release has some unusual performances by the Modern Jazz Quartet. Two selections ("Da Capo" and "Fine") combine the MJQ, which is comprised of vibraphonist Milt Jackson, pianist John Lewis, bassist Percy Heath, and drummer Connie Kay, with the Jimmy Giuffre 3 (Giuffre on clarinet and tenor, with guitarist Jim Hall and bassist Ralph Pena) on "Exposure"; six chamber classical musicians add color, and a pair of other numbers ("Conversation" and the very successful "Sketch") match the MJQ with the Beaux Arts String Quartet. There is plenty of thought-provoking music on this disc even if the idea of creating a third stream between jazz and classical music never came to pass. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide |

Artist: Van Morrison Album: Avalon Sunset Label: Mercury Genre: Blue-Eyed Soul Format mp3, bitrate: 320 kb/s vbr Time: 42:34 Size: 96,9 Mb (full covers) Bubu's Rating: Van Morrison scored one of his biggest commercial successes with Avalon Sunset, a record highlighted by the gorgeous "Have I Told You Lately," one of his most heartfelt love songs and a major radio hit which helped introduce his music to a new generation of listeners. Not a consistently strong LP, Avalon Sunset is nevertheless the work of a master craftsman, its lush orchestration and atmospheric production casting an irresistibly elegant spell; a deeply spiritual record, it also includes the standout opener, "Whenever God Shines His Light," a collaboration with Cliff Richard. - Jason Ankeny at All Music Guide |
