2010: Razia - Zebu Nation |

 |
Artist: Razia Album: Zebu Nation Label: Cumbancha Year: 2010 Quality: EAC Rip, Flac, (tracks+.cue, log-file) Size: 300 Mb Apalled by the environmental destruction taking place in her native Madagascar, singer Razia Said has created an inspired musical call to action. Buoyed but the irresistible rhythms and catch melodies of traditional Malagasy music, Razia's accessible approach and engaging song craft create an album with a timely message and timeless beauty. The CD is packaged in a 6-panel digipak with a matte-finish to compliment the beautiful artwork.
Nat Geo Music lists Zebu Nation as one of the "12 World Music Albums To Watch For In 2010" calling it an, "evocative new fusion," yet, "rooted firmly in Malagasy tradition by some very swinging accordion work." Allmusic.com writes that Razia has, "a beguiling voice, which she uses throughout to great effect, and the playing is impeccable." In the UK, Songlines gave the album 4 stars calling it, "a disk with sincerity and heart," while Music-News swoons, "Zebu Nation is an album of rare beauty and commitment." |

Wilbur Harden, neophyte Detroit trumpete and fleugelhorn jazzman, and Tommy Flanagan, tastefull Detroit keyboard stylist, meet on this common ground in this set. The 8 tunes extracted from Messrs. R & H's score are treated in a manner that is relaxed and swinging, (yet with enough substance of original melody to be plaed for your maiden aunt, Gertrude). Although never regressing into obvious and artificial devices to make this commercial jazz date, the men nevertheless keep their expression of the melodic lines clean and spare, although constantly pulsating in a relaxed modern jazz mood. ~ from liner note |

Artists: Pat Metheny , Jack DeJohnette, Herbie Hancock, David Holland Album: Parallel Realities Live 2 CD’s Label: Kang & Music Year: 1990 Time: 98:32 Format: FLAC Size: 86MB x 7 (with covers) Jack DeJohnette - Drums, Herbie Hancock - Keyboards, Dave Holland - Bass, Pat Metheney - Guitars. For the first time, these four masterful musicians come together to form a jazz group most people would never expect to see happen. Taking their collaborations around the world, they toured Canada, Europe, Japan, and the United States, performing concerts and festivals to sold out audiences and rave reviews. On June 23, 1990, this extraordinary group performed two concerts at the Mellon Jazz Festival at the Philadelphia Academy of music. Both shows were filmed and have been carefully edited to create a technically flawless video of a truly "once in a lifetime" event. All of the songs were selected with great care, as might be expected from a band of this caliber. Including "Shadow Dance", a Dave Holland original; "Solar", a popular Miles Davis original; "Blue" is an original piece by Jack DeJohnette, and "Cantaloupe Island", the closing number of the program, is a Herbie Hancock original from the 60's. ~ from liner note |

2009: Digital Primitives - Hum Crackle and Pop |

Artist: Digital Primitives Album: Hum Crackle and Pop Label: Hopscotch Year: 2009 Format, bitrate: FLAC Size: 308.6M Cooper-Moore remains a fringe figure in contemporary jazz, even in the circles traveled by players of improvised music, by definition the fringe itself. Adding insult to the injury done to his potential for fame is the fact that he seems incapable of making an uninteresting record. Hum Crackle & Pop is the second release by Digital Primitives, with saxophonist Assif Tsahar and drummer Chad Taylor. Cooper-Moore long ago established himself as a master pianist but seems to have left his piano behind in favor of his cache of homemade instruments like the diddley-bow, mouth-bow, twanger and bango (to name just a few of the more easily nameable). Hence, Digital Primitives revels in unusual sounds. If you're looking for music that separates itself from usual run-of-the-mill jazz recordings, you're not likely to hear anything quite like this. The diddley-bow traces its roots to rural blues as a single-string bass. The mouth-bow sounds like a jaw harp, its tones formed by the throat and shape of one's mouth. The twanger...twangs. And the bango seems to be part banjo, part National steel and part Stratocaster. All of them might be amplified and distorted. Around this Taylor lays down steady, funky beats and Tsahar blows freely with strained intensity. "Love Truth" begins as a plea and builds to something more desperate and feral. A take on "Over the Rainbow," at first only vaguely recognizable, features Tsahar's emotional melody line soiled and undercut by Cooper-Moore's dirty sawing. "The People" centers on Cooper-Moore's wonderful singing voice, slashed and looped to ask the question, "Do the people have a right?" Unfortunately, because Digital Primitives is dedicated to sound, sometimes for its own sake, a couple of tracks feel long, jammy, a bit unfocused and inconclusive. Perhaps a small price to pay in the face of such originality and fascinating rhythms.~ Jeff Stockton . Allaboutjazz |

1947-1949: Sidney Bechet - 1947-1949. Chronogical Classics |

Artist: Sidney Bechet Album: 1947-1949. Chronogical Classics Year Of Release: 2000 Label: Classics Records Format: mp3 320 kbps Time: 1 h 17 min 10 sec Size: 163 mb AMG Rating The Classics label has treated the Sidney Bechet canon with trademark thoroughness, with superb chronological sets chronicling his entire career. For many fans, however, it's Bechet's immediate postwar output that ranks above all else, and 1947-1949 compiles what is arguably the greatest period in Bechet's recording career. Masterpieces abound, from the devastating "Royal Garden Blues" to the wonderful "Buddy Bolden Stomp." Classics has done a fine job at improving the sonic fidelity, and the liner notes are very informative. A truly wonderful disc that should appeal to longtime fans of Bechet and neophytes alike.~ Thomas Ward, All Music Guide |

1976: Idrees Sulieman - Now is the Time |

Artist: Idrees Sulieman Album: Now is the Time Label: SteepleChase Year: 1976, release: 1992 Bitrate: FLAC (EAC rip) Time: 47:37 (Total) Size: 297 MB (4 parts w/pics included) AMG rating "Now is the Time" was recorded almost 25 years later in 1976. Sulieman still sounded great and was playing trumpet, flugelhorn, and even alto sax at that time (although he did not play sax on this CD). The album consists of 7 tunes, one of which has 2 takes. Sulieman wrote 4 of them: "Mirror Lake", "Saturday Afternoon at Four", "The Best I Could Dream", and "Care Free". The name of the album derives from Charlie Parker's "Now's the Time" which is also included along with tunes by Duke Jordan and Horace Parlan.
Sulieman is accompanied by Cedar Walton on piano, Sam Jones on bass, and Billy Higgins on drums. You might recognize Cedar Walton from some Jazz Messenger albums and Billy Higgins from some Lee Morgan albums. Sulieman and the rhythm section all sound loose and relaxed and seem to have enjoyed recording this CD very much. Sulieman sings on both trumpet and flugelhorn (the latter on "Care Free"). ~ amazon.com |
