Artist: Milt Buckner Album: The New World Of Milt Buckner Label: Bethlehem Years: 1962-1963 Quality: FLAC Size: 193 mb Total time: 37:29 Like many U.S. jazz musicians who struggled at home and did better abroad, Milt Buckner clearly preferred the cultural and vocational climate in Europe. Over the 11 years that remained in his life, he only returned to North America for brief concert and club bookings -- five times to the U.S. and twice to Canada. Beginning in 1966 with his first Parisian session in the company of Illinois Jacquet and trumpeter Roy Eldridge, Buckner's discography indicates a more stable working environment involving skilled musicians and appreciative audiences. Milt Buckner's final decade of professional activity is mostly measured in recordings issued on the Black & Blue label, with the exception of a few Prestige, Jazz Odyssey and Riff releases. AMG |

2010: Veronica Mortensen – I’m The Girl |

Artist: Veronica Mortensen Album: I’m The Girl Year: 2010 Label: Stunt Bitrate: 320kbps / 44.1 kHz / Joint Stereo Total Size: 106 MB A charming, unaffected approach to a catchy repertoire of jazz, pop and plenty in between, has earned Veronica Mortensen a reputation as one of Denmark’s most popular female vocalists. She is a sensitive and diversified interpreter with rocksteady phrasing, and her pleasing voice and rhythmic swing are paired with a charisma that radiates from within. She is a vocalist anno 2010: though open to many different influences she prefers to be accompanied by jazz musicians. I’M THE GIRL is Veronica Mortensen’s third solo release, and her first with a big band. Jesper Riis’ arrangements were written specially for Veronica and Kluver’s Big Band. Veronica has always been a welcome guest with this outstanding Danish big band, and for this recording, the line-up was augmented with two American legends: At the back of the stage, the sublime drummer Dennis Mackrel “leads” the band with his enormous musical authority. He owes his international fame to his work with Count Basie and others. Vibraphonist Dave Samuels is known for his latin-influenced textures and grooves with the jazz-fusion band Spyro Gyra. And of course there is Kluver’s Big Band, whose collectiveenergy and swinging dynamics are overwhelming. “It is a great joy to have the opportunity to record a live concert”, says Veronica Mortensen. “It gives a completely different kind of energy – and especially with a big band! We had four days. Most of your work as a musician is done live on stage, so it feels good to show people what they can expect to hear at one of my concerts.” Veronica is a popular vocalist with big bands across Europe in general, but her collaboration with Kluver’s Big Band is special to her. The first time she sang with the band was 15 years ago, when she was still a conservatory student. Back then it was the fulfillment of a long-nourished dream following many devoted nights in the audience. So Veronica was weaned by Kluver and his band – “at least as far as big band music goes! I’ve learned a lot from them and worked on many challenging projects like Duke Ellington’s Sacred Concerts, concerts with clarinetist Ken Peplowski, and now this recording with drummer Dennis Mackrel and vibraphonist Dave Samuels. Kluver’s positive approach to my singing, and his confidence in me, has always filled me with humility and gratitude, so I didn’t hesitate when he suggested this recording project.” The repertoire on I’M THE GIRL is a mixture of originals, standards and covers. The title track is a relatively unknown, but fantastic ballad from the 50’s, which Veronica fell in love with the first time she heard it. |

Artist: Art Blakey and Jazz Messengers Album: Lausanne 1960 (2nd Set) Label: TCB Records Year: 1960; release : 1996 Format, bitrate: MP3, 320 CBR Time: 56:29 Size: 131 Mb Nearly every recording by Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers, particularly during the 1958-61 period, is well worth acquiring by fans of hard bop. This 1996 CD from the Swiss label TCB features a particularly strong edition of Blakey's group, with trumpeter Lee Morgan, tenor-saxophonist Wayne Shorter, pianist Bobby Timmons, bassist Jymie Merritt and the drummer/leader.~ Scott Yanow, All Music GuideRecorded for a radio broadcast, this live set from Switzerland in 1960 is an excellent picture of Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers in their classic lineup. Featuring a very young Lee Morgan, Wayne Shorter long before his tenure with Miles Davis, the soulful Bobby Timmons, and longtime bassist Jymie Merritt, this edition of the Messengers is considered by many to be the most talented and certainly the most prolific.
Here the group performs a sizzling set of favorites including Shorter's signature "Lester Left Town," Timmons' classic "Dat Dere," and Charlie Parker's "Now's the Time." In the middle of it all Blakey boldly makes careful introduction of the members of his group, praising each performer like a proud father. For fans of this edition of the Messengers, this is a gem that is sure to hold a treasured spot in any collection. ~ cduniverse.com |

1964: Sun Ra And His Solar Arkestra - Other Planes of There |

Artists: Sun Ra and His Solar Arkestra Album: Other Planes of There Label: Evidence Music, Inc. Year: 1964, release: 1992 Format, bitrate: FLAC Size: 206.8M Other Planes of There (1964) presents Sun Ra (piano) and his Solar Arkestra once again pushing the boundaries on five Ra originals. The exceedingly experimental works are marked by the performers as much as they are by the compositions. The opening title track is an expansive suite of sounds adhering only to the boundless limits of the combo's sonic canvas. Each soloist is given ample room to propel the piece between the inspired Arkestra interjections, which in turn clears the way for the next one. This isn't exactly call-and-response, however there are correlations between the respective and (at times) disparate juxtapositions. John Gilmore's (tenor sax) maniacal wails are matched by Marshall Allen (oboe) and Danny Davis (alto sax) -- the latter of whom quickly establishes the cut's moody and schizophrenic nature. By contrast, "Sound Spectra/Spec Sket" commences with the percussive pairing of Roger Blank (drums) and Lex Humphries (drums) asserting unified rhythmic patterns that are countered by a compact melody from Walter Miller (trumpet). His regal nuances are tentatively met by Ronnie Boykins (bass) and then Ra, who weave their lines considerately, rather than in a flurry of impassioned abandon. "Sketch" bops freely as Gilmore forges a seemingly straight-ahead tune, until Ra's frenzied and ardent runs overpoweringly steer the number further out. Pat Patrick's (baritone sax) sublime contributions are at the center of "Pleasure," smouldering with a measured and dreamy sense of portents. The long player concludes in much the same way that it began, sporting a full ensemble blowout on "Spiral Galaxy." Granted, the selection is certainly not as abrasive and demanding as later efforts, although there is strident involvement from everyone within the dense arrangement. The brass and reed sections provide emphasis behind an off-kilter and loping waltz backdrop. All the more impressive is how well the material has held up over the decades. Even to seasoned ears, the music is pungent and uninhibited, making Other Planes of There a highly recommended collection. ~ Lindsay Planer, All Music Guide |

1993: Don Pullen & African Brazilian Connection - Ode To Life |
Avantgarde, Latin |
 |
 |
Artist: Don Pullen & African Brazilian Connection Album: Ode To Life Label: Blue Note Year: 1993 Format, bitrate: MP3, 320 CBR Time: 58:56 Size: 137 Mb This album was fifth on the U.S. Billboard Top Jazz Album chart Pianist Don Pullen's second recording by his African-Brazilian Connection (which includes bassist Nilson Matta, two percussionists and altoist Carlos Ward) is dedicated to the memory of the late tenor-saxophonist George Adams. The music is more subdued than is usual on a Pullen disc, with the harmonies being less dissonant and the mood often melancholy and reflective but occasionally joyous. This is one of Pullen's more accessible and introspective sessions. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide |

Artist: Idrees Sulieman Quintet Album: Bird's Grass Label: SteepleChase Year: 1975, release: 1992 Bitrate: FLAC (EAC rip) Time: 56:10 (Total) Size: 324 MB (4 parts w/pics included) AMG Rating Prior to 1976, the talented bop-oriented trumpeter Idrees Sulieman had only led one record date (back in 1964). On this superior set, Sulieman is teamed in Copenhagen with tenor saxophonist Per Goldschmidt, pianist Horace Parlan, bassist Niels Pedersen, and drummer Kenny Clarke. They perform a pair of straight-ahead originals, Michel Legrand's "The Summer Knows," and a pair of bop standards ("Wee" and "Billie's Bounce"). Excellent music with plenty of colorful solos. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide |
