Dexter Gordon is represented by a large discography, though the late '60s are little documented. The discovery of this previously unissued radio broadcast from 1969 is a real treasure, as the tenor saxophonist is in superb form, accompanied by some of his favorite musicians: pianist Kenny Drew, bassist Niels-Henning Orsted Pedersen, and drummer Albert "Tootie" Heath. He revisits "Soy Califa," an original written for a Blue Note session earlier in the decade; this hard bop vehicle opens the show with a flourish. Gordon and Drew share the spotlight in a sensitive treatment of "The Shadow of Your Smile." His loping blues "Society Red" features Pedersen's incredible solo work, while "The Blues Up and Down" (co-written by fellow tenor saxophonists Sonny Stitt and Gene Ammons) works perfectly well for Gordon without a sparring partner on his instrument. Beautifully recorded with excellent balance between the musicians and an attentive, respectful audience, it should be considered a mandatory purchase for hard bop fans. ~ Ken Dryden

BILLBOARD Magazine's 2008 Smooth Jazz Artist of the Year, prolific producer/multi-instrumentalist, Paul Hardcastle releases the much anticipated volume VI in his immensely popular Jazzmasters series, a vehicle that helped him re-launch his career in the early '90s, made him a household name and has garnered him legions of rabid fans worldwide.

It's been 19 years since the release of Jazzmasters I a pet project that became a format game changer in its initial release and one that has defined a music style that has yet to be copied. VI mark the entity's ambitious return to the fold and continues to raise the bar with a grouping of highly charged melodic and memorable pieces that have become the Hardcastle/Jazzmasters signature over the last two decades.

"Excellent psychedelic free-funk fantasia" - All About Jazz
"Totally and completely mindblowing." - Aquarius.com
"There's not another record on the planet that sounds even remotely like vibraphonist Khan Jamal's eccentric, one-of-a-kind masterpiece" - Eremite

Jesus. Forget what you know. Every now and then, a record comes along that sneaks up on you and punches you in the back in the head so hard, it sends you reeling for days. This is one of them. Recorded live in 1972, this holy grail private press album by vibraphonist Khan Jamal probably qualifies as a "jazz" record, but not as this world knows it, as it sounds like it was recorded in a spaceship, an echo chamber, and a cave all at once, which makes it virtually impossible to put a timestamp on. The dubbed-out percussion intro of "Cosmic Echoes" sounds like Sun Ra overseeing an Aggrovators session, yet strangely contemporary, and it only gets more inspired and unfathomable from there. The extended free jazz shocks (complete with recording engineer's mystery effects!) and cosmic black psychedelia dreamed up by this underground Philly collective explores outsider worlds that Actuel never knew existed, and emits a kind of smoke ESP-Disk never had a whiff of. Drumdance to the Motherland will render a majority of your record collection somewhat useless, but you're going to want to take that gamble. Utterly unique and essential document from way left of center.

1973: Cannonball Adderley - Inside Straight
     Artist: Cannonball Adderley
     Album: Inside Straight
     Label: OJC/Fantasy
     Year: 1973, release: 1992
     Format, bitrate: MP3, 192 kbps
     Time: 39 minutes
     Size: 55.56 MB

After seven years with Capitol, Cannonball Adderley switched labels to Fantasy where he reunited with producer Orrin Keepnews and the quality of his music immediately improved. With Hal Galper as the band's keyboardist (he contributed three of the seven group originals to this LP), this version of the Quintet (actually Sextet with the addition of percussionist King Errison) was more jazz-oriented than previously while remaining modern and funky.
