Led by the trumpet of Phil Napoleon and featuring at various times Miff Mole or Charles Panelli on trombone and Jimmy Lytell on clarinet, and sometimes the trombone and clarinet brother duo of Tommy and Jimmy Dorsey, the Original Memphis Five were a clear, melodic, and swinging ensemble, and the group's best tracks are as joyous as the arrival of warm spring weather. This set collects all of their Columbia sides from between 1923 and 1931, including "Walk, Jenny, Walk!," two versions of the group's signature "St. Louis Gal" (one done early and one done late in their Columbia stay, making it easy to hear the rapid advancements in the recording technology of the day just by comparing the two), "It Ain't Gonna Rain No Mo'," "How Come You Do Me Like You Do," and the sparkling "Throw Down Blues." Obviously there is a lot more to the story (like some 375 tracks more), but this collection will give listeners a pretty good idea of what Napoleon and Company brought to the table. ~ Steve Leggett, All Musjc Guide |

Eric Kunzel and the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra have a new rendition of the celebratory classic, one that includes choral work from the Kiev Symphony Chorus, along with some of the most impressive cannons and bells heard to date. Over 20 years ago, this adventurous conductor/ensemble pairing inaugurated the legendary Telarc label with their 1978 debut version of the battle hymn.  Artist: Louis Armstrong Album: In Prague Label: Panton Records Year: 1965; Release: 1980 Format, bitrate: Flac Time: 0:46:44 Size: 544MB (with scans) Satchmo's position as one of the great ambassadors of jazz certainly led him to even more exotic points that Prague, at the time of this recording the capital of the since-divided country of Czechoslovakia. In fact, there are many places the bubbling New Orleans trumpeter and vocalist went that probably lacked sufficient equipment to record one of his shows live, let alone release the results on a national recording label. The Czechs waited more than a dozen years to put out this concert from Lucerna Hall, where Satchmo appeared with his group of the time, known as the All-Stars despite the fact that a few of them were maybe a bit more like also-rans. Satch could have carried the whole show if he wanted to, and a good portion of this album is made up of hammy material that everyone would expect him to do. This is also material that listeners may not feel they need more recordings of in their collection such as "Hello Dolly" and "When It's Sleepy Time Down South," and if titles such as these make one cringe, then steer wide of this album, since the audience was so wild about this material that the bandleader even reprises it at the end in an encore medley. There is some spritely playing from Satchmo, trombonist Tyree Glenn, and clarinetist Eddie Shu once the band settles into the jazzier numbers, such as "Indiana." ~ Eugene Chadbourne, All Music Guide |

Eighteen tracks in all with over 68 minutes of music make this an attractive package for fans of the talented vocalist and pianist. ~ Al Campbell, All Music Guide This two-for-one CD spotlights one of jazz's great song stylists. Few singers were as unique as Nina Simone; Her deep voice and rapid vibrato made her instantly recognizable. She was also a stunning pianist, and the second half of this CD--her Carnegie Hall performance--spotlights her instrumental skills as well as her singing.
Not surprisingly, NINA SINGS DUKE ELLINGTON features many classic jazz tunes. Simone sings ballads such as "I Got It Bad" and "Solitude" with intense emotional vulnerability. With the exception of Billie Holiday, few singers have such a natural gift for musical expression. NINA SIMONE AT CARNEGIE HALL is more understated and dark. Comprised of torch songs and movie themes, this album contains only ballads. This doesn't always include vocal numbers either. For example, Simone's piano is showcased extremely well on "Theme from Samson and Delilah." Simone performs this piece like a refined classical pianist, employing Chopin-esque trills and strident forearm chords. In fact, her reading of this movie theme just may be the most eyebrow-raising moment on this disc.~ CD Universe |
