1968 - Phils Woods - Americans Swinging in Paris
     Artist: Phil Woods
     Album: Americans Swinging in Paris
     Label: EMI
     Year: 1968 ; Release: 2002
     Format, bitrate: FLAC (separate files)
     Time: 36:17
     Size: 306 Mb (including artwork)
AMG Rating: 1968 - Phils Woods - Americans Swinging in Paris

Part of a French series, Americans Swinging in Paris is an outstanding document and a welcome reissue featuring the European Rhythm Machine at its very best with French bassist Henri Texier and a couple of Swiss musicians, pianist George Gruntz, and drummer Daniel Humair, who is often mistaken for a Frenchman as is the case in the CD's liner notes. The program is comprised of two originals by Phil Woods as well as compositions by Oliver Nelson, Sonny Rollins, and Eddie Harris. The epic "And When You Are Young," which Woods penned and dedicated to the memory of Robert Kennedy, is alone worth acquiring this CD. The piece almost starts as a ballad before evolving into an emotionally charged scorcher. The saxophonist takes a long breathtaking solo and never lets the intensity drop a notch. Rarely has Woods ever sounded so adventurous. With Gruntz strumming his piano strings in the background, Texier gets the other feature and delivers a terrific solo that reveals a magnificent tone similar in grain to that of Charlie Haden. Then, the band lets it all loose before returning to the theme and bringing this real tour de force to a close. Ironically, the other masterpiece is a one-and-a-half-minute splendid version of Rollins' "Doxy" incredibly packed with ideas and substance. Woods and company say more in those 90 seconds than some artists do over the course of an album. As for the rest of the program, if it does not reach such heights, it remains first-class material performed by an inspired and wonderful band. A gem that belongs to the collection of any serious jazz fan. ~ Alain Drouot, All Music Guide

Happy New Year!

In addition to this being an outstanding value, this is a great live recording of one of Woody's greatest Herds, featuring great solo work of Sal Nestico, Bill Chase, et el. Speaking of Chase, if you like the hard driving, high note lead work of this trumpet legend, there's plenty of it on this recording. Despite the price, it's a high quality recording. The chart selection are a nice blend of straight ahead swingers, as well as funky arrangements of pop tunes of the day, i.e. Hey Jude, Say a Little Prayer, Light My Fire, etc. Great stuff! ~ Amazon.com

     Format: FLAC (LP-Rip)
     Year: 1981
     Size: 90.69MB
     Time: 46:50

This is the second album by Linc Chamberlain on Muse Records. He is joined here with David Freisen another virtuoso of his chosen instrument, the double bass. Linc and David join together seamlessly as they interpret some wonderful tunes. Two of which are Wayne Shorter compositions and some older jazz standards. They are joined at times with Gary Hobbs on drums. Although this album is not as electrifying as "A Place Within" the listener is still drawn into the magic of both players. It is definitely just as essential. Chamberland crafts a unique playing style, which is quite different to other guitarists. Unfortunately, Chamberland died 6 years after recording this album, so we have no other recordings to make further comparisons. In this regard take the opportunity to listen to the beautiful sounds he was able to create alongside David whilst still alive. He leaves a legacy that will continue to encapsulate many a budding guitarist.

REPOST with new links

This duet date from 1989 demonstrates the deep blues feeling and technical mastery Archie Shepp has on the tenor saxophone. Comprised of four standards -- "Things Ain't What They Used to Be," "Body and Soul," "Pannonica," and "'Round Midnight" -- this set is one of Shepp's most enjoyable ever. The reasons are myriad, but it is in large part due to the fluid, loping bass of Richard Davis. Recorded in a club in front of a live audience, Shepp digs deep into his own history of influential tenor players and comes out not wanting, but on par with them, from Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis to Sonny Rollins to John Coltrane. His playing here is big, meaty, and warm, full of subtle emotions as well as bleating cries. Davis' sense of time and melody is nearly incredible on the title track and on "'Round Midnight." The interplay Shepp shares with him is tasty, coming from fragmentary elements in Monk's changes; Shepp and Davis move around the lyric and cut to the heart of the tune's color and ambiguity. It's a haunting version and one that offers a completely different reading of the tune over 17 minutes. On "Pannonica," Shepp's blues feeling comes out of Ben Webster as well as Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis and his soloing is full of warmth, humor, and a ragged sort of elegance. This -- like Shepp's date with Horace Parlan, Goin' Home -- is a major addition to the saxophonist's catalog. ~ Thom Yurek, All Music Guide

Despite the title, there isn't a lot that's unified on vibraphonist Stefon Harris' THE GRAND UNIFICATION THEORY. As song titles like "Corridor of Elusive Dreams," "Escape to Quiet Desperation," and "The Mystic Messenger" might indicate, the album is a grab bag of experimental sounds and stylistic shifts woven together with moments of melodic post bop and other excerpts from the traditional jazz handbook.

The popular vibist's fourth solo outing is also his most ambitious, something appealing, yet often odd and maddening in an attempt to cast jazz as cinema. Simply listening to the multiple moods, colors, and atmospheres here can bring many possible interpretations to just what his theory is, but the journey is at least never dull. His prologue is straightforward, joyous, and swinging jazz with a shimmering lead melody and solo over Tarus Mateen Kinch's lively bass and Terreon Gully's nimble drum fills and hi-hat. Then the ambition (or what some might see as pretention) takes over, and "The Birth of Time" is a hypnotic, mystical slice of zany avant-garde. Wade through, and you'll arrive at its best moments -- Anne Drummond's flute whimsy and the eventual movement into a jamming quartet led by Tim Warfield's tenor. "Velvet Couch" shows a resuming sanity, a mix of big band energy with '60s soul-jazz, but the party voices of "Transition" lead listeners into the new agey jungle known as "Corridor of Elusive Dreams." If you let go of the idea that this is supposed to be a regular trad jazz project, you can have fun with the mysterious escapade "Escape to Quiet Desperation" and the African vocal at the center of the creepy "Song of the Whispering Banshee." All of this crazy push and pull culminates in a ten-minute title track that, not surprisingly, moves from too many minutes of discordance into a feisty jazz explosion. Long after you've listened, you'll be thinking about the trip Harris has taken you on. Hopefully, you won't have gone completely crazy by then trying to figure out the itinerary.

With Houston Person on tenor sax, Bill Hardman on trumpet, and Melvin Sparks on guitar, not to overlook the master of the Hammond B3 himself, Charles Earland nothing can go wrong. All tunes, penned by Earland, are masterfully crafted into a wonderfully sonorous soul jazz excursion. Earland's Hammond licks add a dynamic unique to this genre, something that modern day players have not been able equal. The music is as vitalising as it was back in the late seventies.

Disney's Jazz Album: Big Band & Swing is the least interesting of the three, but that's mostly because so much of it is drawn from common issues like Disney Songs the Satchmo Way and original soundtrack recordings of tracks like Peggy Lee's smoky He's a Tramp. But this disc does have some standout rarities that were new to me, like the cover of Heigh Ho from Mary Martin and Tutti Camarata and His Orchestra, as well as their cover of Bibbidi Bobbidy Boo.2 1 songs including Louis Armsrong, Louis Prima, Mary Martin, Peggy Lee and so on.

But anyway the important thing is the music, obviously: two dutch guys in love with latin rythms and using their grand pianos as percussive instruments sometimes.

"The grand piano ressembles a giant wing, two grand piano's form an airplane, and apart from playing in a two winged formation, Nico vand der Linden's second passion in life is recording sounds of historical propeller-driven aircraft: All over the world he hunts for the 'grand old ladies of the past' and whenever he discovers one he won't leave without a perfect digital recording. In tribute to this beautiful period in aviation history the CD ends with the impressive sounds of the DC6's four Pratt & Whitney engines flyng overhead". ~ From the sleeve notes

Roy Buchanan has long been considered one of the finest, yet criminally overlooked guitarists of the blues rock genre whose lyrical leads and use of harmonics would later influence such guitar greats as Jeff Beck, his one-time student Robbie Robertson, and ZZ Top’s Billy Gibbons.
The Rolling Stones wanted him to replace Brian Jones, and Eric Clapton asked him to play the guitar for Derek & The Dominos – but he turned down both offers. He moved to Los Angeles when he was a teenager and played in the band Heartbeats with Spencer Dryden (who later became the drummer of Jefferson Airplane). After this, he went on tour with Dale Hawkins and played with Robbie Robertson (The Band) who described Buchanan as one of his main influences.

Live at Rockpalast captures a live performance recorded for the German rock series Rockpalast on February 24, 1985 in Hamburg. It is a performance that shows Buchanan’s genius on the guitar in an extremely unique way – especially with his brilliant covers by artists including Jimi Hendrix or Don Gibson. It is no secret, however, that Roy Buchanan was particularly able to present his outstanding talents during his live performances – most of which were unfortunately not recorded.

REPOST with a new link from Mr.jazzamba

Those familiar with the dense, percussive style that pianist McCoy Tyner has cultivated since the 1970s onwards may be surprised by what they hear on Inception. Like Reaching Fourth and Nights of Ballads and Blues, this album gives listeners the chance to hear what a very young Tyner sounded like outside the confines of the classic John Coltrane quartet of the early '60s; it reveals a lyrical approach to jazz piano that seems a far cry from Tyner's mature style. The choice of material is fairly evenly split between modal pieces like "Inception" and more harmonically involved tunes like "Speak Low," and the pianist's treatment of both demonstrates the extent to which his early work was rooted in bebop. Tyner had yet to develop the massive orchestral sound and highly distinctive vocabulary of modal licks that would mark his later style, and throughout this album he spins dizzyingly long and singing lines with an exquisitely light touch. The irresistible rush of forward momentum that he maintains on tracks like "Effendi" and "Blues for Gwen" is breathtaking, and there is an exuberant, almost athletic quality to much of his solo work. Bassist Art Davis and drummer Elvin Jones provide superb accompaniment throughout, and they lay a solid rhythmic foundation for Tyner's sparkling melodic flights. The pianist's penchant for drama, which asserts itself more strongly in his later work, is on brief display in the original ballad "Sunset"; his skills as an arranger, though evident on several tracks, are perhaps best illustrated by the intricate contrapuntal treatment of "There Is No Greater Love." ~ Alexander Gelfand, All Music Guide

Tricolor are a trio out of Chicago whose members are all over the map musically: guitarist Jeff Parker, an AACM grad, plays with the bands Tortoise (indie rock) and Isotope 217 (Miles-ian jazz/dub/funk fusion); acoustic bassist Tatsu Aoki is active in the Windy City's "free" scene, and recently did a duet album with Malachi Favors; David Pavkovic (drums) plays in various indie rock bands like TOE 2000. The results are fascinating improvs, not easy to "categorize." Parker's style encompasses pre-Mahavishnu John McLaughlin, John Abercrombie and the AACM school of free improvisation. Aoki and Pavkovic play less like a "rhythm section" and more impressionistically (that AACM influence again), splashing dabs of (dark) color on Parker's canvas. If you a "free" jazz fan that sometimes wishes that Derek Bailey would play more "inside" (or if Jim Hall would play "out") or a very adventurous rock fan (i.e., Faust, Can, Dead C, etc.), Mirth + Feckless is worth your time.
~ Mark Keresman, Jazzreview

In the early '90s, the short-lived instrumental group the Coctails created an intriguing blend of easy listening pop and avant-rock. The Chicago trio, Tricolor, are undoubtedly familiar with the Coctails' work -- guitarist Jeff Parker, a member of both AACM and Tortoise, is part of the same general school of musicians that has infiltrated every level of the Chicago post-rock scene -- and although they don't sound that much like the Coctails, a similar aesthetic seems to be at play. Parker, drummer David Pavkovic, and bassist Tatsu Aoki have a similarly playful feel to their music, and a clear fondness for the likes of Creed Taylor's late-'60s work (the bossa nova-tinged "Seven," sounds like a tribute to Taylor's late-period albums with Wes Montgomery), and the occasionally twee moments of the West Coast cool school. Not at all a visionary or exploratory record -- and anyone looking for the wilder free improv side of Atavistic had best look elsewhere -- Mirth + Feckless is coolly entertaining, effortlessly melodic pop-jazz, with just enough spikiness to stay out of the easy listening bins.

Happy New Year! Merry Christmas!

Ace's Father of West Coast R&B is an excellent 14 track collection of the tenor saxophonist's '50s and '60s records. There are several solo sides, plus cuts featuring him with Lloyd Glenn and Gene Phillips' orchestras. Since it features Maxwell Davis as both a leader and a sideman, the collection is a nice overview of his peak years. - Thom Owens, AMG
The music here includes sides from a series of recording dates with Gene Phillips in 1947/48: ”Flying Home”, ”Royal Boogie” and ”Gene Jumps the Blues”. The version of ”Flying Home” starts with a recreation of Illinois Jacquet’s solo on the 1942 hit version for Lionel Hampton and then builds on that solo. The Lloyd Glenn & His All Stars track is from a live concert. Maxwell recorded some sides for Modern in 1950 including ”Boogie Cocktails” and ”Bristol Drive”. The very cool ”Bluesville” and ”Thunderbird” date from 1954. Every track here is an instrumental and the styles covered include jazzy R&B and rock ‘n’ roll.

A fresh, unprejudiced and unique album. A work in which the simplicity and beauty, in the most tradicional meaning of the word, aren`t enemies of modernity.
The recording portraits the search for a personal language in which Mariano Sivori goes knitting a bright sounding music.
Having a solid formal training, Sívori is a musician with eclectic influences that goes from rock music to contemporary classical music and, of course, jazz.

DEAR crazy_captain, Happy Birthday to you!

That Thursday in Freiburg back in October 1959 remains an intoxicating experience. A tight and sprightly band in top swinging form, the elegant tones of Benny Goodman’s clarinet and the sensational Anita O’Day. O’Day’s sensuality and mellow phrasing in Fats Waller’s impudent „gHoneysuckle Rose“ and Earl Bostic’s somewhat frivolous, leisurely version of „Let Me Off Uptown“ make these sets spark and crackle with energy even 50 years on. The recordings reveal the warmth and enthusiasm with which the King of Swing was received on his tour of Germany.

The tumultuous applause was merely a foretaste of the liberating effect that rock’n’roll was about to unleash – a new genre which before long would steal the limelight from those in the jazz world who had made it possible. Goodman’s orchestra, effectively a band of bandleaders, showcases one of the finest line-ups of the post-war era and underpins the evening’s success with solos that are sharp and savoured to the full. Almost a generation separated Jack Sheldon and Jerry Dodgion from Goodman and the idiosyncratic Red Norvo, but the ensemble-playing is superb. A real highlight is the medley based on „Not For Me“ featuring the scatting O’Day.

On september 2nd 2011, Adele played the Royal Albert Hall in London.....A dream come true moment and a highlight of her record breaking year with the album '21'.
This is the full-length concert, with behind the scenes footage!

Live at the Royal Albert Hall features British vocal sensation Adele performing at the storied venue during her promotional tour for her 2011 studio effort, 21. Backed by her rock ensemble as well as a string section, Adele runs through most of 21 while adding in earlier hits off her 2008 debut, 19, including "Chasing Pavements," "Hometown Glory," and "My Same." Primarily, however, Adele focuses here on material off 21, including such cuts as "Rumour Has It," "Turning Tables," "Someone Like You," the über-ballad "Take It All," and the funky hit "Rolling in the Deep." In perfect vocal form here prior to her 2011 throat surgery, Adele is the epitome of a burnished soul diva with a singer/songwriter's heart. Beautifully recorded and performed, Live at the Royal Albert Hall conveys all the drama of Adele's music and is the perfect companion piece to 21.

Jazz snobs and jazz purists refuse to admit it, but the fact is that jazz was once part of pop culture. Back in the late '30s, swing wasn't regarded as ultra-intellectual, complicated, inaccessible music for the select few: It reached the masses, and it heated up the juke boxes, neighborhood bars, house parties, and high school dances that would subsequently be dominated by rock or R&B. Count Basie was an artist, but he was also an entertainer, and much like Earth, Wind & Fire in the 1970s or Prince in the 1980s, he provided music that had a brain as well as a beat. Spanning 1937-1939, this superb collection takes you back to a time when Basie's big band was on the cutting edge of African-American music. This 24-song CD, which Nimbus released in 2000, isn't the last word on Basie in the late '30s; some essential favorites from that period are missing, including "Going to Chicago Blues" and "How Long Blues." But the material that Nimbus does provide is excellent; definitive recordings of "One O'Clock Jump," "Jumpin' at the Woodside," "Swinging the Blues," and "Oh, Lady Be Good" are an essential part of any swing collection. Five-star soloists like trumpeters Buck Clayton and Harry "Sweets" Edison and tenor saxophonist Lester Young are employed, and singer Jimmy Rushing (a seminal blues shouter who influenced everyone from Joe Williams to King Pleasure and Eddie Jefferson) is featured on about half of the selections (including "Sent for You Yesterday," "Good Morning, Blues," "The Blues I Like to Hear," and "I Keep Remembering"). Again, Swing Legends: 24 Classic Hits doesn't contain all of Basie's essential recordings of the late '30s, but it's definitely among the collections of swing-era Basie that's well worth obtaining.

The group was formed by the direction of the program "Jo Soares Onze e Meia" that plays on a national and open tv channel from Brasil in 1988. They were a quartet (Bira, Milton and Maestro Edmundo - the last was replaced in 1991 by Maestro Osmar Barutti). In 1990, after Jo's - the show host - own request, the quartet became a quintet e Derico was invited to be the saxophonist and flutist.

In 1992, the Quinteto Onze e Meia started a daring project - record a live cd with a repertoire of polular brazilian musics played in jazz and blues. They did a tour into the country and the CD called Quinteto Onze e Meia had been released.

Today, the quintet became a sextet, with the entry of Francisco "Chiquinho" Oliveira, trompetist. And with the death of Rubens, the guitarist Carlos "Tomate" Nascimento replaced him with nice level and hability

They still play in the Jo Soares program.
