1998: Phil Woods Featuring Johnny Griffin - The Rev & I
Artists: Phil Woods Featuring Johnny Griffin
     Album: The Rev & I
     Label: Blue Note
     Year: 1998
     Quality: MP3@320 kbps
     Size: 129 mb
     Total time: 67:15
AMG Rating: 1998: Phil Woods Featuring Johnny Griffin - The Rev & I

With an easy bop sensibility, Woods cuts loose on a number of originals and a few surprising chestnuts for a strong set. Fellow reed player Johnny Griffin (the two played in Monk's nonet in the late '60s) and the fine rhythm section of Cedar Walton on piano, Ben Riley on drums and Peter Washington on bass all make great contributions. On the title track, Woods and Griffin swing in a relaxed bossa nova style, while "I'm So Scared of Girls When They're Good Looking" is by turns doleful and good-humored. All in all, a charming set. ~ Tim Sheridan, All Music Guide

1956: George Van Eps - Mellow Guitar
     Artist: George Van Eps
     Album: Mellow Guitar
     Label: Sundazed Music Inc.
     Year: 1956; release: 1999
     Quality: MP3 320 Kbps
     Size: 53,38 Mb
     Total Time: 32:17
AMG Rating: 1956: George Van Eps - Mellow Guitar

The master of the seven-string guitar (which he invented) and a studio musician since the 1930s, George Van Eps only had rare chances to lead his own record dates. In fact, this classic album was his only recording as a leader during 1950-1965. Van Eps is heard playing in three settings: with a quiet rhythm section, a nonet arranged by Paul Weston, and a subtle string orchestra. Because he always came up with the most beautiful chords in the world, Van Eps’ playing throughout this set is quite delightful, performing ten standards (including “I’ll Remember April,” “Let’s Do It,” “Have You Met Miss Jones?,” and “The Boy Next Door”) and his own “Lost Canyon” and “Tango el Bongo.” Although some may think of this as easy listening music, a close listen reveals the intricate creativity of the great George Van Eps. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide

Including sessions recorded the same day as those on Bags Groove, this album includes more classic performances from the date that matched together trumpeter Miles Davis, vibraphonist Milt Jackson, pianist Thelonious Monk, bassist Percy Heath, and drummer Kenny Clarke. Davis and Monk actually did not get along all that well, and the trumpeter did not want Monk playing behind his solos. Still, a great deal of brilliant music occurred on the day of their encounter, including "The Man I Love," "Bemsha Swing," and "Swing Spring." ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide

JUNO AWARD WINNER 1978
Best Jazz Album / Best Engineering

Winner of the 1978 Juno Awards for Best Jazz Album & Best Engineering. The 1977 version of Rob McConnell's Boss Brass is similar to the arranger/valve trombonist's 1997 band. The personnel includes such standbys as trumpeters Guido Basso and Sam Noto, trombonist Ian McDougall, the tenors of Eugene Amaro and Rick Wilkins, guitarist Ed Bickert, bassist Don Thompson and drummer Terry Clarke. McConnell's conservative charts swing and contain subtle surprises, with "Just Friends," "Street of Dreams," and Bob Brookmeyer's "Dirty Man" being among the better selections. Since many of the Boss Brass' earlier recordings were only made available domestically by the now-defunct Pausa label, this worthy music will be difficult to find. ~ Editorial Reviews
