2003: Josh Abrams - Cipher |
Freejazz, Avantgarde |
 |
 |
Artist: Josh Abrams Album: Cipher Label: Delmark Records Year: 2003 Format, bitrate: mp3, 320 Size: 151 mb AMG Rating: The Wire (1/04, p.74) - "It's hard to think of an Improv release that covers more stylistic ground - or more thoughtfully and beautifully - than Josh Abram's latest." If ever there were a more accurately titled jazz record, one would be hard-pressed to find it. Bassist Josh Abrams (formerly of Roots and currently of Town and Country) has enlisted the help of Chicago guitar boss Jeff Parker, Italian reed maestro Guillermo Gregorio, and European brass journeyman Axel Dörner in order to completely blur the lines between free improvisation, free jazz and "free composition." Here is a field of play, sketched out over ten selections ranging from four-and-one-half minutes to just over nine minutes in length that strip music of its barest essentials for performing in a group setting, and then sets about to perform these works as a group. Elements of silence, tonality, texture, dynamic, and pure spatial relationship serve to uninvent preconceived notions of all of the preceding terms. Certainly jazz, free jazz, free improv, and composition come into the body of this music, but these entrances are disembodied within the larger context of exploration and curiosity. And yet, the sounds here are far from academic. They are living and breathing encounters with what lies just beyond the solo or group interaction. Interplay enters into language, and that language into silence. Strange, mysterious, and stunningly beautiful, Cipher is a modern enigma.~ Thom Jurek, All Music Guide |

2011: James Carter - Caribbean Rhapsody - Concerto for Saxophones and Orchestra |

 |
Artist: James Carter Album: Caribbean Rhapsody - Concerto for Saxophones and Orchestra Label: Emarcy Year: 2011 Format, bitrate: mp3, 320kb/s Time: 45 min Size: 95 MB AMG rating: Somewhat of a departure from the post-bop jazz he is known for, saxophonist James Carter's 2011 release Caribbean Rhapsody features several orchestral collaborations with classical composer Roberto Sierra. Featuring the newly minted title piece, the album also includes the composition "Concerto for Saxophone and Orchestra," which originally premiered in Detroit in 2002. Produced by Michael Cuscuna, the album also includes a guest appearance by Carter's cousin Regina Carter on violin as well as cellist Akua Davis, whose string quintet is featured on "Caribbean Rhapsody." As the centerpiece of the album, "Caribbean Rhapsody" is conceptualized around Sierra's life growing up in Puerto Rico and the various styles of music he encountered, from bolero to Latin jazz and salsa. Elsewhere, Carter leads the ensemble through the frenetic, angular, and somewhat noir-ish leadoff track, "Ritmico"; gets several ruminative and lyrical saxophone interludes; and then dives headlong through the cinematic boogie-woogie-inflected piece "Playful -- Fast (With Swing)." A bold, adventurous performer with a titanic facility on the saxophone, Carter is perfectly suited for performing with large ensembles, and the orchestrations here are gorgeously rendered landscapes for Carter to play against. In fact, composer Sierra purposely left certain cadenzas and other areas of the scores on Caribbean Rhapsody open for Carter to improvise, and the results are nothing short of thrilling.~ Matt Collar, All Music Guide |

1986: The Charlie Mariano Group - Plum Island |

Artist: Charlie Mariano Album: Plum Island Label: Mood Records Year: 1986 Format, Flac Time: 40:43 Size: 240 Mb Charlie Mariano's career can easily be divided into two phases. Early on he was a fixture in Boston, playing with Shorty Sherock (1948), Nat Pierce (1949-1950), and his own groups. After gigging with a band co-led by Chubby Jackson and Bill Harris, Mariano toured with Stan Kenton's Orchestra (1953-1955) which earned him a strong reputation. He moved to Los Angeles in 1956 (working with Shelly Manne and other West Coast jazz stars), returned to Boston to teach in 1958 at Berklee, and the following year, had a return stint with Kenton. After marrying Toshiko Akiyoshi, Mariano co-led a group with the pianist on and off up to 1967, living in Japan during part of the time and also working with Charles Mingus (1962-1963).
The second phase of his career began with the formation of his early fusion group Osmosis in 1967. Known at the time as a strong bop altoist with a sound of his own developed out of the Charlie Parker style, Mariano began to open his music up to the influences of folk music from other cultures, pop, and rock. He taught again at Berklee, traveled to India and the Far East, and in the early '70s settled in Europe. Among the groups Mariano has worked with have been Pork Pie (which also featured Philip Catherine), the United Jazz & Rock Ensemble, and Eberhard Weber's Colours. Charlie Mariano's airy tones on soprano and the nagaswaram (an Indian instrument a little like an oboe) fit right in on some new agey ECM sessions and he also recorded as a leader through the years for Imperial, Prestige, Bethlehem, World Pacific, Candid (with Toshiko Akiyoshi in 1960), Regina, Atlantic, Catalyst, MPS, CMP, Leo, and Calig, among others. ~ Scott Yanow, Rovi |

Artist: Joe Farrell Album: Skateboard Park Label: Xanadu Records Year: 1979 Format, bitrate: Mp3, 320 Kbps Time: 38 minutes Size: 91 Mb This is one of Joe Farrell's strongest sessions, an advanced straight-ahead outing in which he sticks exclusively to tenor. With a quartet comprised of keyboardist Chick Corea, bassist Bob Magnusson and drummer Larance Marable, Farrell stretches out on three of his interesting originals, Corea's "High Wire -- The Aerialist," and the standards, "Speak Low" and "You Go to My Head." This valuable and very musical outing is long overdue to be reissued on CD. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide |

Artist: Various Artists Album: Mojo Club Presents Dancefloor Jazz, Vol. 5: Sunshine of Your Love Label: Universal Records Year: 1997 Format, bitrate: Mp3, 256 Kbps Size: 129 mb with covers The record label Universal Records launched a sampler collection with the title ”Mojo Club Presents Dancefloor Jazz”, of which 12 volumes were published between 1992 and 2005; volume 13 was published in 2008 by Edel Records.I am going to publish all 13 volumes here soon!! The Mojo Club is a currently closed down music club in Hamburg, Germany – located on the city’s most famous street: the Reeperbahn. Founded in 1989 and relocated to the Reeperbahn in 1991, the Mojo Club developed to be one of the leading lights of Hamburg nightlife, with an international reputation similar to the Star Club. With its characteristic ”M”-logo, the club became the continental stage for the progressive London club sounds during the 1990s. The Mojo Club can be seen as the German voice of Dancefloor Jazz and as a mastermind regarding modern breakbeat sounds like Acid Jazz. With performances of artists like Gilles Peterson, Massive Attack, Moloko, the Propellerheads, Pizzicato Five, Roni Size, Goldie, the E-Z Rollers as well as Kruder & Dorfmeister, the club ranked among the protagonists of the German club scene during the 90s. Furthermore, the successful club compilations ”Electric Mojo” and ”Dancefloor Jazz” became known over the years and a highly innovative cultural program completed the picture with lectures like ”Urban Poetry” and ”Macht Club” in 1993 or ”Le Café Abstrait” of Rafaël Marionneau, which paved the way for the chill out sound in 1996. Between 1992 and 1997 the Mojo Club ran two fashion stores in Hamburg named ”Mojo – the shop”. In April 2003 the Mojo Club was closed down and the building was torn down in 2009. Today three different building units are being under construction on the premises of Reeperbahn 1: a twin tower office block, a hotel and the new Mojo Club. ~ Wikipedia.org |

Artist: Cootie Williams & Rex Stewart Album: The Big Challenge Label: Fresh Sound Records Year: 1957; Release: 2004 Format, bitrate: mp3, 128 kbps Size: 42,64 Mb AMG Rating: This CD reissue from the Spanish Fresh Sound label brings back a fun and unusual Jazztone session. Six distinctive and very different veterans were teamed together: trumpeter Cootie Williams, cornetist Rex Stewart, trombonists Lawrence Brown and J.C. Higginbotham, and the tenors of Coleman Hawkins and Bud Freeman. With pianist Hank Jones, guitarist Billy Bauer, bassist Milt Hinton, and drummer Gus Johnson providing solid backup and Ernie Wilkins sketching out some arrangements, the unique matchups are very successful. Each of the musicians has an opportunity to be featured and the tradeoffs are quite memorable. A colorful gem. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide |
