Tribute to Jeff by David Garfield & Friends achieves that for all those who participated, but is in many ways the antithesis of the rewritten "Candle in the Wind," vigorously celebrating the life of multiple Grammy-winning drummer and first-call L.A. session cat Jeff Porcaro rather than choosing to mourn the tragedy of his early death in 1992 at age 38. Though best known for his skinwork in the pop supergroup Toto, Porcaro's influence on the music scene ranged beyond the light pop/rock the band was known for; he grew up on jazz and his diverse timekeeping skills were tapped by everyone from Boz Scaggs, Bruce Springsteen, and Don Henley to Stan Getz and Larry Carlton. He was also the backbone of the longstanding L.A. club-hopping band Los Lobotomys, the fusion-oriented '80s and early-'90s answer to Tom Scott & the L.A. Express featuring pianist Garfield and Toto member Steve Lukather on guitar (Joe Sample would occasionally sit in on second keyboard). In his two decades on the scene, Porcaro made a wealth of friends from all genres, ranging from hard rock to soul, blues, and straight-ahead jazz. Garfield, a veteran of the L.A. scene known for his long-term stint as George Benson's musical director, recalls his late friend as "the ultimate team player, never a forefront kind of guy, with a special camaraderie with musicians." As ringleader, arranger, and producer of the project, as well as lead performer, Garfield succeeds in capturing that sort of ensemble spirit. With 75 musicians participating, the pianist faced a four-month logistical nightmare of studio schedule-crunching in L.A., Nashville, and New York, but, using Porcaro as a muse (by virtue of lighting candles and occasionally playing cassettes of the guest of honor's interviews), Garfield & Friends pull off the ultimate wake, a remarkably all-encompassing, frequently unpredictable overview that, well, Porcaro would have doubtless killed to play on. ~ Jonathan Widran, All Music Guides musical director, recalls his late friend as |

Thus an artist who records such a record must take into account what the audience wants to hear and not his own musical aspirations, which may be why Mingus and Miles never recorded one. Ramsey Lewis, however, is the perfect guy for such a task, since he always approached playing jazz from the standpoint of creating a catchy hit with the public rather than arty noodling. Although recorded in 1961, a few years before he hit it big with "The 'In' Crowd," he still can swing harder than most at this early stage. Lewis and his trio barrel through the first five songs with a healthy dose of jubilant bounce and a penchant for uncovering the unexpected blue notes in carols. He glides through "Winter Wonderland" with heavy, funky chords and a propulsive snap but takes a more reverent approach on "Santa Claus Is Coming To Town," a slow, gospel-tinged treatment. The latter half of the album adds a string section (which fortunately doesn't oversaturate the music with glitz like on other Christmas albums) and Lewis tinkers around with the celeste a little bit here. "The Sound Of Christmas" is one of the most euphoric songs, a cascading wash of strings and bells awash with the glee of holiday tunes. While Lewis deserves most of the credit, Eldee Young and Redd Holt also deserve an extra candy cane for providing such enthusiastic support. Simply put, this is one of the most flat-out fun jazz Christmas albums you'll find. Lewis avoids the overly reverent—no "Silent Night" or "What Child Is This?"—in favor of songs he can tear through with the brisk gait of a sleigh ride and the delight of a full stocking. Pianist-arranger Fred Elizalde is best known (such as he is) for his work in England in the late '20s. Particularly obscure are the nine titles that he cut in Hollywood in June 1926, all with a five-horn nonet except his unaccompanied piano solo on "Siam Blues." The performances are superior hot dance band sides, including "That Certain Feeling" and "Boneyard Shuffle." The remainder of this CD features little-known bands active in Los Angeles during 1924-1926 that recorded for the Sunset label: Major & His Orchestra, the Lake Arrowhead Orchestra, the Trocadero Melody Boys, Eddie Frazier's Plantation Orchestra, Carlyle Stevenson's Bon Ton Orchestra (one of the few bands in which some of the personnel has been identified), Hank Frye's Virginia Hotel Orchestra, Steve White's Sunset Recording Orchestra, Owen Fallon's Californians, the Sunset Recording Orchestra, Lada's Louisiana Five, and Ray Gills' Movieland Orchestra. In the nearly 25 years since their first recording, the UK-based group has crafted a sound that maximizes the potential of not only the acoustic guitar but also its electric counterpart - and in so doing they've explored the subtle corners where jazz, pop, world music and other genres intersect. Along the way - with the help of a massive worldwide following created by consistent touring - they've weathered personal setbacks, dramatic shifts in musical trends, and in recent years, sweeping changes in the music industry. The next step in this ongoing journey is Roseland, their new recording set for release on September 27, 2011. While they may call themselves Acoustic Alchemy, Carmichael and his creative partner and co-pilot, Miles Gilderdale, exercise plenty of creative license by injecting generous elements of electric guitar into the mix on Roseland. This sonic edge comes courtesy of Gilderdale, who was an electric player first and foremost before joining the band after the death of co-founder Nick Webb in early 1998. Together, Carmichael and Gilderdale explore elements of jazz, rock, country and reggae - all of which makes for an album that's both eclectic and yet cohesive at the same time. Also along for the ride is the band's usual touring lineup: keyboardist Fred White, bassist Julian Crampton and drummer Greg Grainger. Other assistance in the sessions comes from Hammond organist Ricky Peterson, pedal steel player Frank Mizen, drummers Dan Mizen and Sam Hobbs and a full complement of horn players. Roseland was recorded in Gilderdale's newly constructed home studio in York, England, a place where the band could be creative without the pressure of a ticking clock. "We used the studio as a place to write," says Carmichael. "We would just throw ideas at each other. You try things as you go along. That's the beauty of having your own studio. You can try an electric guitar solo here, a steel-string solo there, a trombone solo somewhere else, whatever you like. It may have taken us a little longer, but if something didn't work, it didn't matter. We just tried things until we found what did work." "For a lot of people, instrumental music is just a sound that plays in the background," says Carmichael. "But we put a lot into it - not just with this record but with every record we've ever made. If the number of times an artist's track is played is a measure of his success, Kenny G would beat most musicians by a mile. The saxophonist packed the ballroom to capacity when he was here a couple of years ago. But a lot more was brewed during his visit. Kenny G says, "Before coming to India I was listening to a few Indian musicians and Rahul Sharma's CD was among them. To my surprise I bumped into him just before getting on stage in Mumbai. We got chatting and decided to work on something together." The result is the album, Namaste India, which retains both the natural meditative sound of the santoor and the flamboyant jazz melodies of the saxophone. The seven-track album follows the easy listening style of both the musicians but experimentation has been kept to a minimum. "I took each song as it came. In the west, with jazz you are expected to play these elaborate solos. But in this album it was more organic. I experimented in 20 different ways before I found the right mix. I never thought of merging our sounds when I began. I wanted to place myself in the players' seat and see what comes off it," says Kenny G, who loves working at night in his studio in LA where he engineers his own tracks. Rahul adds, "I sent him my first track a year ago. And for a few days I didn't receive a reply. I thought that maybe he didn't like it. But one night I was checking my inbox and there it was. An update of the 1994 compilation The Best of Sade, The Ultimate Collection contains all but two of the Sade singles -- ”When Am I Going to Make a Living” and, unfortunately, ”Turn My Back on You” -- released through the first six studio albums. There are six well-chosen album cuts, highlighted by the exceptionally spacious Love Deluxe ballads ”Bullet Proof Soul” and ”Pearls.” For some Sade followers, the one rarity (a restrained Neptunes mix of ”By Your Side”) and four new songs will be enough to justify re-acquiring the old material. The best of the new songs is a cover of Thin Lizzy's anguished ballad ”Still in Love with You,” a surprising but strikingly appropriate choice that is granted a hint of sweetness. On the opposite end, a remix of Soldier of Love's ”The Moon and the Sky,” featuring Jay-Z, marks Sade’s first and hopefully last collaboration with an MC. The mood is generally light-hearted. Dr. Trombone's island is apparently inhabited by various interesting sea creatures, dusky maidens, and James Bond villains which crop up at various points in the music. Some jazz fanatics might find all this irritating and may even wonder why the recording was made at all. However, Harry Watters informs me that "recording the disc was a therapeutic way of getting through the harshest weeks of sub-freezing temperatures" which he faces as an inhabitant of Washington D.C.. On a more personal level, the music represents a nostalgic trip back to his childhood in the Virgin Islands and is a tribute to his recently-deceased father, whose work for NASA took Watters and his family to tropical climes.>>>>> |

Two, reissued by Koch, is typical of his output. Mixing together aspects of pop, R&B and classical with just a touch of jazz, James (heard throughout on electric keyboards) put the emphasis on catchy melodies and lightly funky rhythms. The results range from insipid to pleasant, with a brass section, a string section, and vocalists (including Patti Austin) utilized to create what is essentially background music. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide Recorded during a period when Bob James did some of his finest work, TWO is a classic mid-'70s jazz fusion album. James arranged all six tracks and conducted a cast of stellar musicians on this album including Steve Gadd, Hubert Laws, Randy Brecker and Eddie Daniels. One of the highlights is the opening cut, "Take Me to the Mardi Gras," which demands attention from the very first note. The song will even sound familiar to hip-hop fans, as James' tune was sampled many years later on RUN-DMC's "Peter Piper." Richard Galliano was drawn to music at an early age, starting with the accordion at 4, influenced by his father Lucien, an accordionist originally from Italy, living in Nice.
After a long and intense period of study (he took up lessons on the trombone, harmony, and counterpoint at the Academy of Music in Nice), at 14, in a search to expand his ideas on the accordion, he began listening to jazz and heard on records the great trumpet player Clifford Brown. "I copied all the choruses of Clifford Brown, impressed by his tone and his drive, his way of phrasing over the thunderous playing of Max Roach." Fascinated by this new world, Richard was amazed that the accordion had never been part of this musical adventure.
Some later collaborations include George Mraz, Brigitte Fontaine, Al Foster, Juliette Greco, Charles Aznavour, Ron Carter, Chet Baker, Enrico Rava, Martial Solal, Miroslav Vitouš, Trilok Gurtu, Jan Garbarek, Michel Petrucciani, Michel Portal, Eddy Louiss, Anouar Brahem, Wynton Marsalis, and Toots Thielemans. He was a key member of Claude Nougaro's band for several years as a pianist and accordionist. |

It at least seemed eventful whenever “Soldier of Love,” released to radio a couple months prior to the album of the same title, was heard over the airwaves. Even with its brilliantly placed lyrical allusions to hip-hop past and present and its mature sound, the single stuck out on stations aimed at teens and twentysomethings, as well as points on the dial that court an older audience. It was the most musical and organic, while also the most dramatic yet least bombastic, song in rotation. Crisp snare rolls, cold guitar stabs, and at least a dozen other elements were deployed with tremendous economy, suspensefully ricocheting off one another as Sade Adu rewrote “Love Is a Battlefield” with scarred, assured defiance. While the song was an indication of its parent album’s reliance upon organic instrumentation -- the band’s use of synthesized textures and programming is greatly diminished -- it merely hinted at the dark, even fatalist, depth of heartache conveyed throughout the set. On “Bring Me Home,” Adu is content in resignation (“Send me to slaughter/Lay me on the railway line”), while on “The Moon and the Sky,” she projects a bruised and angered bewilderment (“You lay me down and left me for the lions”). The focus at least switches temporarily to a loved one on “In Another Time,” in what resembles a love letter to (what is likely) a young daughter mistreated by members of both sexes (“Their whispers are hailstones in your face”; “Soon they’ll mean nothing to you”). Although the bleakness is tempered with themes of survival and recovery, and (just) one song that is truly sweet (“Babyfather”), a fair portion of the album’s lyrical content comes off as drained-sounding, only echoed with vanilla arrangements that are merely functional, restrained to a fault, greatly outstripped by “Soldier of Love.” Lacking rhythmic hypnotism and relatable most to those who are experiencing solitude created by romantic desertion, this is not your mother's Sade album.~ Andy Kellman, All Music Guide |

Employing a more exotic Brazilian feel on Sleeping Gypsy, with lush orchestration (courtesy of veteran jazz arranger and conductor Claus Ogerman), Franks moved his acoustic guitar work to the background to create a romantic sound with no sappiness. With "Down in Brazil" and, particularly, "Antonio's Song," his ode to Antonio Carlos Jobim, Franks was doing with Brazilian music for the rock crowd in the '70s what Stan Getz did for the jazz crowd in the '60s. He again employed his witty wordplay and evocative storytelling ability on "B'wana-He No Home," a song about a time when Dan Hicks was staying at his house while Franks was away.
