2011: Richie Beirach - Impressions of Tokyo: Ancient City Of The Future
     Artist: Richie Beirach
Album: Impressions of Tokyo: Ancient City Of The Future
     Label: Outnote Records
     Year: 2011
Format, bitrate: MP3, CBR 320 Kbps
     Time: 57:14
     Size: 132 Mb

Solo expression will reveal someone’s true character mercilessly. The fainthearted should abstain! Richie Beirach, New Yorker residing in Leipzig (Germany), most certainly doesn’t lack personality. His has been strengthened by forty years of practice in which he combines the discipline of a classical training with the vertigo of improvisation.
Richie has a deep knowledge of Japan – no less than 26 visits since the Seventies with numerous concerts and recordings – and doesn’t hide his admiration for its impressive culture and respect for art and music in all its forms. Under his fingers, Tokyo reveals itself in its duality, at the crossroads of tradition and modernity. His « impressions » follow like a series of snapshots presented in the form of haikus, the purest of poetic forms (3 verses of invariably 5, 7 and 5 syllables). Make no mistake; this freely chosen constraint enables Richie Beirach to go straight to the heart of the matter. Whether evoking the Japan of times immemorial – Kabuki theatre, stone gardens surrounding monasteries, flowering cherries, or even earthquakes …, or the Japan of today - the Shinkansen (Bullet train), Kurosawa’s movies, Takemitsu’s music… he appears alternatively sober, almost ascetic, or dense, searching the entrails of the piano. In other words: how can one translate, without betrayal, the Tokyoite soul and the daily life of millions of city dwellers? With this journey to Tokyo, Richie Beirach reaches this form of Zen serenity which is simply the prerogative of the greatest.

A major force in Russian Jazz since the mid ‘90s, pianist Yakov Okun, finally places himself on the international stage with his Criss Cross debut, a trio date with world-class bass-drum team Ben Street and Billy Drummond, on which he mixes challenging original material with strong arrangements and less traveled Songbook repertoire and tunes by Sonny Rollins and Fats Waller.

At 38, Okun is an individualistic voice, an important player, able in his improvisations to refract an entire timeline of jazz vocabulary in a cogent, compositional manner.

This album is live recording in Munich compositions on world music themes: japanese, russian, turkish and others.

In the late 1950s, the emergence of Playboy Magazine and the appearance of "nudie cutie" movies like The Immoral Mr. Teas had made burlesque seem passй in the eyes of many, and by 1962, the art of the striptease was far enough out of fashion to become a nostalgia item. In 1959, Gypsy, the musical about the life of burlesque star Gypsy Rose Lee, was a hit on Broadway, and two years later, Ann Corio, who had been a well-known "peeler" in the '40s and '50s, launched her stage revue This Was Burlesque, which re-created the baggy-pants comedy and sexy dance numbers that were burlesque's bread and butter. The show jump-started Corio's career and was in production in New York or on the road until the early '90s; inspired by the success of the show, Roulette Records (who had released This Was Burlesque's original cast recording) teamed with Corio to produce the 1962 album How to Strip For Your Husband: Music to Make Marriage Merrier, an LP featuring a dozen sassy, rhythm-heavy numbers pattered after the musical accompaniment favored by vintage ecdysiasts, along with liner notes by Corio offering advice to women eager to put some spark in their relationships by learning to disrobe creatively. The album did well enough to prompt a sequel, and Collectors' Choice Music has reissued How to Strip for Your Husband and More How to Strip for Your Husband on a single CD. Sonny Lester arranged and conducted the orchestra for both albums, and had a hand in writing ten of the twelve selections on the first collection (the other two came from the Irving Berlin catalog). The first album has a broad, brassy feel, with the drums prominent in the arrangements and slide trombone and occasional whistles accentuating the bump and grind of the music (while the opening track comes as close to re-creating David Rose's "The Stripper" as possible without incurring a plagiarism suit). The second album is significantly more subdued and features a few more outside writers (including an arrangement of "Lullaby of Birdland"); it recalls a latter day big-band set, with noticeably more sophistication in its swing and a tight ensemble playing the charts with noticeable skill and enthusiasm. This disc makes for fun listening even though the same themes pop up over and over, and both then and now it provides effective accompaniment for aspiring amateur strip teasers; Corio's original liner notes are also included, which feature such words of wisdom as "Nothing looks better on a woman than anatomy!"

2009: Archie Shepp & Joachim Kuhn - Wo!Man
Artists: Archie Shepp & Joachim Kuhn
     Album: Wo!Man
     Label: Archie Ball
     Year: 2010; release: 2011
     Format, bitrate: MP3, CBR 320

Joachim Kuhn, the great German jazz pianist, has played piano with Ornette Coleman – now he partners another saxophone legend of the 1960s American new wave in this warmly lyrical and distinctive duet with Archie Shepp. Shepp's signature is a robust yet hollow-toned and slippery sound that joins the sumptuousness of early jazz saxists to the multiphonic abrasiveness of John Coltrane and Albert Ayler. The contrast between Shepp's lurching outbursts and brusque tenderness, and Kuhn's fleet and beautifully weighted streams of consciousness is very effective – and from two such legendary firebrands, it's a movingly melodious exercise. Kuhn's ruggedly tolling folk-theme Transmitting is a highlight; Shepp's free-ballad Nina curls and smokes; the jaunty Drivin' Miss Daisy joins squawky tenor to long-lined blues piano improv; Ornette Coleman's Lonely Woman is echoingly desolate; and Sophisticated Lady releases the notes of the famous melody as if they are shy about emerging from the shadows. ~ John Fordham, Guardian

The pleasure is not, moreover, entirely Shepp's, or Kühn's, for Wo!man is a resplendently lyrical album. It is programmed over five sinuous Shepp/Kuhn originals and three jazz standards, Duke Ellington's "Sophisticated Lady," Ornette Coleman's "Lonely Woman" and Earle Hagen and Dick Rogers' "Harlem Nocturne." Shepp's signature rough edges and periodic free flights are intact, but so too are his retentions of balladeers Coleman Hawkins and Ben Webster, both formative influences: this is above all an album of lush romanticism. ~Allaboutjazz.com

This SteepleChase CD, taken from a live concert from the Montmartre Jazzhus in Copenhagen, features trumpeter Kenny Dorham, flugelhornist Allan Botschinsky, pianist Tete Montoliu, bassist Niels Pedersen (then only 17) and drummer Alex Riel stretching out on four standards and Dorham's "Short Story." Dorham (featured on "Manha De Carnival") and Botschinsky (who is showcased on "The Touch of Your Lips") display complementary styles but are not shy to occasionally play fiery phrases. However Montoliu (in exciting form) often steals the show during the relaxed set.

Andrei Bitov together with his friends-musicians A. AIexandrov, Y. Parfenov, V. Volkov and V. Tarasov, who call themselves "professional tramps", remake Pushkin's poetry masterpieces. Every public performance essentially becomes a celebration of Pushkin's jubilee because it touche and revives not only the memory of the poet but also unity with him of everyone who hears, feels and thinks.
The Enlightenment came. By the 200th anniversary we've decided to give new life to the moments of the genius lines' creation instead of regular publishing of the poet's collected works. From words presence of the astonished "client". It's more evident than "hard ringing gallop" of the next monument, it's pure spirit. It's not abstruse, certainly. But it's interactive, for sure.
What else can the companies like independent "Long Arms" records and Group of Companies IMA, with their own public and image, famous for their outstanding culture actions, do? Among their professional interests are: art and politics, economy and business, advertising and design, perfect technologies and psychological novelties. All that makes up for an improvised "cocktail on the rocks" which blows up chaos and harmonizes consciousness for the sake of SUCCESS.
IMA Group of Companies improvises and makes poetry out of ordinary words and wishes of their clients. That is why this project has become part of two creative firms' activity.
"The hour of sad choices..." is the first unusual experience, the first release of "WORD & MUSIC" series.
It's a lucky chance that it's so "Pushkin-like" and that the joint idea of "Long Arms" records and IMA Group is realized.

A very unusual pairing – the jazzy genius of Dizzy Gillespie, and the funky samba grooves of Trio Mocoto – recorded live in this very special concert from 1974! Dizzy's well-known to most folks, and is playing here in that sweet funky style he brought to his best 70s records – a mix of Latin and laidback soul jazz, similar to his best Perception and Pablo sessions – which makes for a great complement to the soulful Brazilian grooves of Trio Mocoto! The trio are best remembered for their work with Jorge Ben – and while they aren't exactly in the same space here, the addition of their percussion to Dizzy's quartet is mighty nice. Mary Stallings sings on one track – "Evil Gal Blues" – and other titles include "Rocking With Mocoto", "The Truth", "Samba", "Dizzy's Shout/Brazilian Improvisation", and "Behind The Moonbeam". ~ Dusty Groove America, Inc

Flutist Robert Dick decided to do a CD with several of the spacier jazz standards, and with the Soldier String Quartet, he succeeds in bringing life to John Coltrane's "India" and Jimi Hendrix's "Machine Gun," among others. His highly expressive playing harks back to Eric Dolphy, and though this disc might not be a good choice for purists, the playing is highly enjoyable.

Proving that hot jazz and vintage pop of the 1920’s and 30’s is as relevant as ever in the present day, the Midnight Serenaders provide an infectious and irreverent take on the raucous and carefree music of “The Jazz Age.” Far from a simple repertory band, they infuse their repertoire with a genuine groove and energy truly appropriate to this revolutionary music that took the country by storm in its heyday. Led by the charming frontline of crooner/rhythm guitarist Doug Sammons and ukelele-strumming chanteuse Dee Settlemier, the Serenaders’ repertoire consists of classics by the likes of Fats Waller and Ethel Waters, obscure tunes by Clarence Williams carefully unearthed by the band, and an increasing number of Settlemier’s originals which mesh indistinguishably with the classic repertoire.
The Midnight Serenaders are back with a follow-up to their very popular debut 2007 release "Magnolia" with this new collection of 1920's and 30's influenced jazz and pop songs. This recording features four original songs penned by singer/ukulele player Dee Settlemier. Riding the crest of the neo-traditional jazz craze presently occurring on the West Coast, the MIDNIGHT SERENADERS are a six-piece swing band playing regularly to enthusiastic audiences throughout the Pacific Northwest. Performing vintage pop, Hot Jazz, and Hawaiian instrumentals, as well as an expanding collection of Jazz Age-sounding original songs, these six veteran musicians strive to share their love for the music of the 1920’s, 30’s and 40’s. With an exciting stage show, tight musical arrangements, and outstanding solo and harmony vocals, MIDNIGHT SERENADERS fans include nostalgists, swing dancers, melody junkies, retro-clothing hounds, and folks who simply appreciate good quality, jubilant music.

Do we really need another reworking of the Ellington oeuvre? Enough already. Ellington gets nearly as much attention as John F. Kennedy, Jr. Even the considerable talents of Bobby Watson, Charles McPherson, Cyrus Chestnut, and Wynton Marsalis, don't necessarily justify the present effort. While there are moments of orchestral and individual swing, there are also arid and torpid passages. The long instrumental "Night Creature" illustrates this dual tendency. "Prelude to a Kiss" summoned lassitude in this listener, "Solitude" even more so. I like Bridgewater's vocals on "Caravan" and "Bli-Blip," and Bobby Watson's alto sax on "Midnight Indigo." Watson is also on "Fleurette Africaine." "Bli-Blip is arranged and conducted by Slide Hampton and the alto sax solo is by McPherson. "Caravan" has Steve Turre on shells, Hassan Hakmoun on percussion, and Vincent Nguini on guitar. Bridgewater opens the tune with a kind of tribal chanting. John Mauceri conducts the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra.
~ Marcela Breton, jazztimes.com

This is a fantastic album, and Dee Dee really shines on it. Ellington tunes seem to fit perfectly to her style. She is featured mainly on the first part of the album, while the later part is instrumental. Dee Dee and Cyrus are also a great match, which they show case on several tracks, most obviously "I'm beginning to see the light". I highly recommend this album

In the spring of 1959, seven musicians got together in a converted church on 30th Street in Manhattan and made jazz history. Over fifty years have passed since Miles Davis asembled his famed sextet to record Kind of Blue, and in that time the album has risen to the level of masterpiece.
"Another tracks of "Kind of Blue" give listeners the unprecedented opportunity to enter the 30th Street studio and witness the creation of this remarkable album.

"Only two people, so much music!" Al Jarreau

Petra Magoni is considered to be one of most incredible voice as well for her interpreter's qualities today as on technical plan and Ferruccio Spinetti is surely one of the more brilliant bassist his generation and replacing a whole orchestra with its simple instrument.
While the Musica Nuda's previous albums are primarly comprised of well-known standards, many of them in English (e.g., the Beatles' "Eleanor Rigby", "come together", "nature boy", "kiss" etc.), the new album complici is comprised of a majority of original and unreleased songs and been immediately Charte n°1 on top Jazz (physical & digital) in France & Italy.
"Complici" in Italian means complicity, an amazing complicity that did not cease evolving; growing for soon 8 years and that constitutes the cement and the soul of their unique duo. "Complici" is a sober disc, a disc of songs, where sobriety and emotion take the place of the explosive energy of the previous opuses.

A very special album for Giya Kancheli’s 75th birthday (it was recorded “in secret” (in Oslo and Riga) as a surprise 75th birthday present for the great Georgian composer). When starting out on his career as a creator of symphonic and chamber music, the Georgian composer also wrote much incidental music for the theatre and the cinema. Though still little-known in the West, the film music was widely heard across the former Soviet Union and the themes here (there are 20 on the album) enjoyed great popularity.
ECM decided to invite Dino Saluzzi to revisit Kancheli’s music for stage and screen, in his personal and highly creative way. Simultaneously Gidon Kremer, an old friend and champion of Kancheli’s music, also expressed an interest in doing something special for Giya’s birthday. With both Kremer and Saluzzi on board, the project took on new dimensions. Finding links between the worlds – Kancheli’s, Kremer’s, and Saluzzi’s - is a task adroitly handled by Pushkarev. The vibraphonist, who works often with Kremerata Baltica, prepared arrangements realized with Kremer in Riga, and also worked in Oslo with Saluzzi, intuitively supporting Dino’s very relaxed approach to the material.
Nine of the featured themes derive from Kancheli’s collaborations with internationally acclaimed theatre director Robert Sturua. There are also themes from films by Georgi Danelia, Eldar Shengelaia, Sergei Bodrov, Lana Gogoberidze and others.

The stars are of the night; voices of the day. Of your body is its shadow; of the moon its pallor. Of you yourself are my memories; of the soul is its sensitivity. As notes are of instruments. Of how many echoes is the world populated? Countless: many unknown, other merely hinted and discernible. How many are there in music? The fact that the E.S.P. Trio decided to call this album Echoes is an indication... ~ Davide Ielmini, liner notes

Yuri Markin - musician, composer and educator - in his later creative period turned to the classics of world music and made a number of impressive jazz works based on music by Tchaikovsky, Rakhmaninov, Glinka, Prokofiev, as well as Bizet, Debussy, Chopin. The choice and eloborate tuning of selected themes has shown the refined taste of the composer. All his musical pieces of that time bear clear traits of modern jazz - the author uses appropriate techniques and modes: making matching and catching arrangments, innventing charming harmonies, tilling ground for soloists' improvisations to show instrumental perfection. In general, all these pieces make up a mature immaculate opus, an ideal musical context in which each soloist and the whole ensemble are able to stress - at the most expressive point - the pristine beauty and emotional force of the original classic source.
This CD presents perfomance of Yuri Markin and his quartet at the Moscow Art Jazz Club on March 15, 1996. Members of a quartet are prominent Moscow musicians - both jazz perfomers and Markin's academic colleagues. Live recording clearly reflects a creative excitement of musicians and respectful responsiveness of audience. ~ A. Eydelman, liner notes
