”I met (Jorge Luis) Borges in 1982. He had come to Santa Fe for conference, and Norma Adrover, my dear professor of literature, arranged a meeting attended by some of his students.
Many years passed and I met again with Borges, but this time with his word. It absorbed me so much that I couldn't read another author for some years.
Then I conceived the idea of composing a piece in his honor, or rather, as a sincere thanks. It was premiered in New York with ”El Arranque” Orchestra and the Wynton MarsalisLincoln Center Jazz Orchestra”.
Time passed and we premiere the work in Argentina. It was in Santa Fe with the Jazz Ensemble, could not be otherwise, with the imposing frame of the UNL Auditorium during the Jazz Festival.
Almost ten years of design work we present this CD that contains the record of that concert. With it we celebrate the greatest writer of our land and one of the most transcendent of our language. And closing a labyrinth worthy of Borges, through which came genres and cultures, friendships were born, and toured the most beautiful human experiences. Through music. Thanks to Borges.”
Ramiro Gallo Buenos Aires, May 2009.

Gracias a Borges."

In this second album Santa Fe Jazz Ensemble celebrates the centenary of the birth of the great Duke Ellington, with their own versions of songs from his repertoire. The record was made live during a concert held in the "Patio Cultural La Catedral Nueva" in the city of Santa Fe, Argentina, and is a good document of the sound of the orchestra in action. These recordings accompany others made in the studio, which illustrates the sound of the "Ellington Units" (small instrumental ensembles derived from the orchestra).
Some original arrangements were chosen, such as Ellington's band played, and other writings by great arrangers like Sammy Nestico, Rob Pronk and Barry Ross, among others. In addition, this time, they have the presence and wisdom of one of the best drummers in Argentina: the great Roberto Césari Jr.
The AVI files and sequences on the CD are intended to establish a closer link with the task of dissemination Santa Fe Jazz Ensemble has been doing since its formation.

Victor Wooten - What Did He Say?   Artist: Victor Wooten
   Album: What Did He Say?
   Label: Compass
   Year: 1997
   Format, bitrate: mp3, 192 kbps
   Time: 61:59
   Size: 80,5 MB

A superb, varied, playfully crafted disc, and an absolutely stunning effort that surpasses expectations. The music varies from funk and rap to a fantastic version of John Coltrane's "Naima," to a beautiful, very different -- yet quite recognizable without being boring -- version of the Lennon/McCartney standard "Norwegian Wood." The shifts of stance, posture, and presentation are at times abrupt but never disconcerting; rather, they provoke thought and reflection. These shifts appear at times between the tracks and at times in the midst of the pieces themselves. The disc is never inaccessible; the combination of jazz and Irish music brings to mind the seemingly ridiculous combinations of Paddy Moloney of the Chieftains. The big departure from the first album is that this is not a solo bass album. He uses other instruments, and uses them well. Not to be missed.

Tony Bennett & Bill Evans - Together Again
     Artist: Tony Bennett, Bill Evans
     Album: Together Again
     Label: DRG
     Year: release 1976
     Genre: Vocal Jazz, Ballads
     Format, bitrate: Mp3 @ 192 Kbps
     Time: 35:29
     Size: 49 MB
AMG Rating: Tony Bennett & Bill Evans - Together Again

Tony Bennett's second, and final, meeting with Bill Evans is a memorable session for several reasons. Bennett is very relaxed and inspired by Evans' imaginative yet reserved accompaniment, which allows the spotlight to stay focused on the singer. The program is a wide-ranging mix of standards ("You Don't Know What Love Is" and "Dream Dancing") and classic jazz compositions (including Evans' bittersweet "The Two Lonely People," and Thad Jones' moving "A Child is Born"). The two veterans blend so well, that it sounds as if getting together in the studio was a regular occurrence. Evans performs the subtle ballad "The Bad and the Beautiful" as a solo, the only song which Bennett sits out. ~ Ken Dryden, All Music Guide

Mingus Big Band - I Am Three
Artists: Mingus Big Band, Mingus Orchestra & Mingus Dynasty
     Album: I Am Three
     Label: Sunnyside
     Year: , release Jun 7, 2005
     Genre: Jazz, Experimental Big Band
     Format, bitrate: Mp3 @ 256 Kbps
     Time: 76 : 28
     Size: 131 MB
AMG rating:Mingus Big Band - I Am Three

As usual, the Mingus Big Band is in exuberant form throughout their performances on this CD, most notably on definitive versions of "Song with Orange" and "Orange Is Color of Her Dress," both of which were arranged by the late John Stubblefield. A bit different is that two songs apiece are played by Mingus Dynasty (a septet taken out of the big band) and the Mingus Orchestra. The latter, in addition to six bandmembers, adds French horn, bass clarinet, bassoon, and guitar. But although those two smaller groups have their moments, there is nothing that can match the Mingus Big Band at its finest. The key soloists include trumpeters Jeremy Pelt, Randy Brecker, and Jack Walrath, pianist George Colligan, trombonists Conrad Herwig and Ku umba Frank Lacy (who sings on "Paris in Blue"), tenor saxophonists Seamus Blake and Abraham Burton, baritonist Ronnie Cuber, and altoists Miguel Zenón and Alex Foster although anyone in this band can solo with the best, including bassist Boris Kozlov. The Mingus Big Band has been one of the most exciting of all big bands since its formation and I Am Three is another dazzling effort. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide

Leroy Jones - Props For Pops
     Artist: Leroy Jones
     Album: Props For Pops
     Label: Columbia
     Year: release 1996
     Genre: Jazz, New Orleans Jazz
     Format, bitrate: mp3 256kbps
     Time: 62:18
     Size: 105 MB

Leroy Jones is a fine New Orleans trumpeter based in trad jazz but open to the influence of bop. His clipped phrases give him a distinctive sound, and his vocals are spirited. On this CD, he pays homage to Louis Armstrong by playing several songs associated with "Satch," along with a few of his own original tributes. Teamed up with trombonist Craig Klein and a couple of rhythm sections (including pianist Harry Connick Jr. on two tracks), Jones is in fine form on such numbers as "Struttin' With Some Barbecue," "Jeepers Creepers," and "Ain't Misbehavin'," sometimes re-creating Armstrong's solos and vocals note-for-note, and at other times putting in some of his own ideas. A good-humored and successful tribute. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide
