REPOST with new links (+ covers & scans) from mister eman.

A ballad collection that emphasizes Chet Baker's troubled-romantic vocal style, it's not too surprising that these 1957 recordings remained in the vaults for almost 40 years. For one thing, Baker's delicate tenor, having won the hearts of thousands of teenage fans, was considered somewhat of a novelty to most critics. For another, his guitar-and-bass accompaniment is incredibly sparse, and while that doesn't hurt his trumpeting at all, being so prominent in the mix occasionally betrays his vocal limitations. Baker's fans, though, need not worry about such petty analysis, for the wistful, tormented tone of this record is the very sound that helped create the legend, and in places he is firmly in his element, especially on "There's a Lull in My Life" and a sublime instrumental version of "Little Girl Blue," which features some of his finest soloing. While it isn't the place to start, Embraceable You is a fascinating example of why Chet Baker's tragic spirit remains as attractive today as it was in his lifetime. -- Review by All Music

Joao Gilberto - Joao Voz e Violao     Artist: Joao Gilberto
     Album: Joao Voz e Violao

     Release: 2000
     Format, bitrate: MP3@320 kbit/s

     Size: 70 MB

If Antonio Carlos Jobim is the compositional force behind the bossa nova, and jazz tenor saxophonist Stan Getz is its most eloquent American interpreter, then Joao Gilberto is its angelic voice. Since 1958, Gilberto's haunted and lyrical Brazilian-born Afro-Indian Portuguese has seduced generations with its sophistication and seductiveness. This CD, produced by Caetano Veloso, is Gilberto's first studio recording in nearly 10 years and it's well worth the wait. With just his voice and his guitar, Gilberto fills the heart and head with enough musical force to equal a symphony orchestra. Of course, the classic bossa nova titles "Desafinado," "Voce vai Ver," and "Chega de Saudade" retain their pathos and power. Gilberto christens Veloso's "Desde que Samba e Samba" and "Coracao Vagabundo;" Ernesto Lecuona's "Eclipse" and Gilberto Gil's "Eu Vim da Bahia" with the same soulful sounds that made him a legend for 40 years. -- Eugene Holley Jr., Amazon.com
