     Recorded in Los Angeles on June 23, 1954, tracks one through eight are strikingly beautiful studies for alto saxophone with backing by pianist Don Abney, bassist George Duvivier and drummer Louie Bellson. These are some of the loveliest selections in the entire Benny Carter discography.

     Don't be scared off by the His Majesty King Funk title; this is not Green's later commercial stuff. This is excellent Grant Green with Larry Young on organ, Harold Vick on sax, Ben Dixon on drums, and Candido Camero on conga -- essentially a classic four-piece. And this is soul-jazz with a deep groove. His Majesty King Funk is the last of five albums Green recorded with Young. Produced by Creed Taylor, it is the only album Green did for Verve and perhaps his last real jazz album before several years of inactivity, after which he became somewhat more commercial in his approach. The album includes the standard "That Lucky Old Sun (Just Rolls Around Heaven All Day)."

     Recorded at a time when trumpeter Kenny Wheeler was playing regularly in bassist Dave Holland's band, this quintet outing with Holland, Stan Sulzman (who switches between soprano, tenor and flute), pianist John Taylor and drummer Billy Elgart features six of Wheeler's originals, some of which were written quite a few years before. "Everybody's Song But My Own" and "Flutter By, Butterfly" are probably the most memorable of the compositions but each of the performances (which feature consistently rewarding solos) are worth hearing.

Kenny Wheeler's third ECM album as a leader is most notable for teaming his trumpet with the innovative tenor and soprano of Evan Parker, a brilliant British avant-garde player who is often overlooked in the U.S. With fine playing from trombonist Eje Thelin, vibraphonist Tom Van Der Geld, bassist J.F. Jenny-Clark and drummer Edward Vesala, the sextet performs six Wheeler originals that combine together advanced swinging with fairly free explorations. Stimulating music.

     3-LP box set released by Capitol Records that was later re-released in 2001 as a 2-CD set.

     The LPs in the set are labeled as if the listener were to play all the A-sides on all the records first, and then the B-sides. Thus, the first record has "1" on the A-side, and "6" on the other. The second record has "2" on the A-side and "5" on the B-side. The third record has "3" on the A-side and "4" on the B-side.

     For consistency, the tracklisting has been a literal "A/B" side listing, regardless of the intended playing order of the records.

     Landslide is comprised of previously unreleased mateiral from three separate Dexter Gordon-led sessions between May 1961 and June 1962. All three sessions hold together fairly well, and although nothing on the record qualifies as a masterpiece, nothing is bad, either. In comparison to the released sessions, this material may pale somewhat, but it remains first-rate hard bop and is recommended to Gordon collectors.
