   Увидев имена Bill Frisell и Wayne Horvitz на обложке диска, ожидал услышать нечто в стиле Джона Зорна и Naked City. Но альбом оказался очень душевным и красивым, почти романтичным.    No doubt pleased with his countrified direction on Gone, Just Like a Train, Bill Frisell gives us a lot more of basically the same thing here -- only with expanded numbers in the ranks. Bassist Viktor Krauss and drummer Jim Keltner return, now accompanied by Wayne Horvitz's understated organ and piano; Greg Leisz on an assortment of fretted instruments, including the dobro, pedal steel guitar and mandolin; and on "Shenandoah," Ry Cooder's atmospheric guitars. The first tracks of Good Dog, Happy Man pick up right where Gone, Just Like a Train left off -- low-key, perhaps too low-key -- but tracks like "Big Shoe" and "Cadillac 1959" add a bit of swagger to the lope and "Poem for Eva" sports the best tune. Again, Frisell often captures a loose, evolutionary jamming quality in these sessions, playing the country accents off of his jazz sensibilities. Unlike its predecessor, though, you can't imagine this being recorded on a backwoods front porch, for there are some production tricks and distant-sounding electronic loops that give away its Burbank studio origins. Purists on either side of the jazz/country divide are hereby warned to back off so that the rest of us can enjoy this.

     Johnny Dowd presents a curious mixture of the raw and the sophisticated on his sixth album, Cruel Words. His band, which features keyboard player Michael Starks and drummer Brian Wilson in addition to his own guitar work, plays rudimentary blues-rock arrangements with harsh, angular rhythms in a sort of John Lee Hooker-meets-Devo sound, occasionally veering toward heavy metal, and he sings in a gruff voice with a strong rural accent. But his lyrics and the subject matter of his songs, while sometimes bluntly expressed, sound more like the product of a college graduate than an unlettered bluesman. Antiwar statements and descriptions of the class struggle come up frequently, and Dowd sometimes writes like he's starting a novel instead of a song. "He died in a motel surrounded by women's shoes," begins "Final Encore," a song that turns out to be about a deceased singer. That person cannot be Dowd himself, of course, but elsewhere he does turn directly autobiographical. To avoid any confusion, "Drunk" quickly name-checks its main character, "Johnny Dowd, Johnny Dowd, Johnny Dowd," before turning to a heartfelt declaration of recidivist alcoholism. "Oh, what I would give for a drink," Dowd sings, lustily accompanied by Mekons Jon Langford and Sally Timms. It all ends up with a cover of Chuck Berry's "Johnny B. Goode" that recalls what Devo did with "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction" before breaking into the main riff of Black Sabbath's "Iron Man." Having started his recording career at the half-century mark, when most artists are slowing down or have stopped altogether, Dowd continues to record regularly, and, idiosyncratic as they may be, he is clearly making the albums he wants to make. ~ William Ruhlmann, All Music Guide

Единственное, что можно сказать, это то, что сборник этот, судя по всему, неофициальный, и кто-то проделал титанический труд, собрав все это в одном месте :) Предлагаю ознакомиться с первым из трех томов. Опять меня поразили люди, которые играют, в основном, авангардный джаз, причем на лейбле, выпускающем музыку в направлении Radical Jewish Culture. Отличнейший альбом кавер-версий песен Боба Дилана, теперь уже с точки зрения еврейской культуры.

The sophomore release by the Jamie Saft Trio is a provocative and entertaining statement. Trouble attempts to reexamine Dylan's legacy from a Jewish point of view, as part of Tzadik's Radical Jewish Culture series, and to position Dylan as a Jewish role model—views that Dylan most likely would have renounced immediately. But furthermore, Trouble is provocative in its choice of Dylan compositions as well as their arrangements, and in these regards, Dylan may be more pleased. As Saft notes in his liner notes, "Blind faith is something Bob Dylan has resisted throughout his career—musically, spiritually and politically."
